    Hong Kong Contingent Bank Capital Facility (CBCF)

    On October 14, 2008, Hong Kong’s financial secretary announced the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) would use Hong Kong’s Exchange Fund to provide standby capital to banks if needed. The Contingent Bank Capital Facility (CBCF) was available until the end of 2010 to shore up depositor and investor confidence in the local banking sector and commenced in parallel with a broader set of announced measures including a consumer bank deposit guarantee. Twenty-three locally incorporated “Authorized Institutions” were eligible to access CBCF capital upon request. The provisioning of CBCF capital would be accompanied by enhanced oversight from the HKMA. The Hong Kong government did not formalize the structure or terms of CBCF capital, nor did it expressly define any limits for individual banks or in aggregate. The CBCF never injected any capital and expired as initially scheduled, at the end of 2010

    Organisational learning and the organisational life cycle: the differential aspects of an integrated relationship in SMEs

    Purpose: This study seeks to relate the practice of organisational learning (OL) in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to the organisational life cycle (OLC), contextualising the differential aspects of an integrated relationship between them. Design/methodology/approach: It is a mixed method study with two consecutive phases. In Phase I, 30 Hong Kong SMEs identified through theoretical sampling were classified into three life-cycle stages – inception, high-growth, and maturity. In Phase II, their employees’ learning practices (grouped by learning levels) were statistically compared using the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and then followed up for confirmation with qualitative semi-structured interviews. Findings: This study uniquely suggests the nature of a relationship between SME organisational learning and the OLC. Empirical results show that three out of the four learning levels (individual, group, organisational, and inter-organisational) practised in SMEs are varied in importance between life-cycle stages. Research limitations/implications: Comparative studies are encouraged in other parts of the world to strengthen the findings – with either SMEs or large organisations. Practical implications: The study informs SME owner/managers about what is important for employee learning at different business stages so that appropriate learning strategies or human resource development (HRD) policies can be formulated in a timely fashion to promote competitiveness. Originality/value: It is among the first studies to connect SME learning with organisational growth. The relationships found serve as a sound foundation for further empirical investigations

    Cross-Talk-Free Multi-Color STORM Imaging Using a Single Fluorophore

    Multi-color stochastic optical reconstruction microscopy (STORM) is routinely performed; however, the various approaches for achieving multiple colors have important caveats. Color cross-talk, limited availability of spectrally distinct fluorophores with optimal brightness and duty cycle, incompatibility of imaging buffers for different fluorophores, and chromatic aberrations impact the spatial resolution and ultimately the number of colors that can be achieved. We overcome these complexities and develop a simple approach for multi-color STORM imaging using a single fluorophore and sequential labelling. In addition, we present a simple and versatile method to locate the same region of interest on different days and even on different microscopes.     Sex Differences in Health Related Quality of Life in Head & Neck Cancer One Year After Treatment

    Background: Head and neck cancer (HNC) makes up about 3% of all cancers and is treated with systemic therapy, radiation, surgery, or a combination of these. HNC treatment can be associated with decreased patient reported health related quality of life (HR-QoL), which can lead to depression. The majority of studies found that females reported worse patient reported HR-QoL than males, however, there were a few that did not have a significant difference in overall patient reported QoL. With the discovery of patient oriented outcomes (PROs) in clinical practice affecting patient satisfaction, provider-patient relationship, and overall patient mortality, it is vital to include PROs in the creation of treatment plans. Objectives: The objectives of this project are to highlight the differences in HR-QoL between men and women. Ultimately, using these PROs clinically will help to improve patient care, augment patient-provider trust, and optimize treatment plans. Using PROs and recognizing where unconscious biases of providers come into play is pinnacle, and this project aims to highlight how men and women\u27s experiences are different in the treatment of HNC. Methods: Participants were given the FACT-H&N instrument one year after treatment for head and neck cancer at a single tertiary academic center to assess different aspects of Hr-QoL. Sex differences were analyzed between the groups. A Wilcoxon Rank Sum test was performed to assess associations with sex and survey responses, as well as to assess associations with total laryngectomy and survey responses. Results: There were 100 participants from a single academic center of which 73% were men and 27% women. Several of the questions had significant differences between men and women: I feel ill (P=0.0299), I am satisfied with my family communication about my illness P=0.0075), I am satisfied with my sex life (P=0.0496), My voice has its usual quality and strength (P=0.0057), I can swallow naturally and easily (P=0.0437), and I can eat solid foods (P=0.0248). There were no significant differences between men and women with laryngectomies. Conclusions: Overall, men felt more ill, were less satisfied with their sex lives, were less likely to feel a normal strength and quality of voice, felt decreased ability to swallow normally, and felt they could not eat solid foods; women were less satisfied with communication about their disease to their families. For those who had undergone laryngectomy, there were no significant differences between men and women. Different aspects of quality of life for men and women are affected by head and neck cancer. Monitoring PROs are becoming increasingly standard of care for patients, and providers need to be equipped understand how to interpret data accordingly and understand the inherent biases

    Target selection of soluble protein complexes for structural proteomics studies

    BACKGROUND: Protein expression in E. coli is the most commonly used system to produce protein for structural studies, because it is fast and inexpensive and can produce large quantity of proteins. However, when proteins from other species such as mammalian are produced in this system, problems of protein expression and solubility arise [1]. Structural genomics project are currently investigating proteomics pipelines that would produce sufficient quantities of recombinant proteins for structural studies of protein complexes. To investigate how the E. coli protein expression system could be used for this purpose, we purified apoptotic binary protein complexes formed between members of the Caspase Associated Recruitment Domain (CARD) family. RESULTS: A combinatorial approach to the generation of protein complexes was performed between members of the CARD domain protein family that have the ability to form hetero-dimers between each other. In our method, each gene coding for a specific protein partner is cloned in pET-28b (Novagen) and PGEX2T (Amersham) expression vectors. All combinations of protein complexes are then obtained by reconstituting complexes from purified components in native conditions, after denaturation-renaturation or co-expression. Our study applied to 14 soluble CARD domain proteins revealed that co-expression studies perform better than native and denaturation-renaturation methods. In this study, we confirm existing interactions obtained in vivoin mammalian cells and also predict new interactions. CONCLUSION: The simplicity of this screening method could be easily scaled up to identify soluble protein complexes for structural genomic projects.     The practice of employee learning in SME workplaces: A micro view from the life-cycle perspective

    Purpose: This study explores how employees in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) practise and view workplace learning at three different life-cycle stages. Design/methodology/approach: It is a qualitative study using a sample of 30 Hong Kong SMEs classified into inception, high-growth or maturity stage, from which firms in each stage were randomly selected and interviewed until data saturation was reached. Snowball sampling was adopted during interviews and data were examined through thematic analysis. Findings: Consistent themes (patterns) from 134 semi structured interviews are identified, addressing both similarities and differences in the nature of the practice of workplace learning in SMEs between life-cycle stages. Research limitations/implications: More similar comparative studies in other parts of the world, including quantitative surveys on larger samples, with either SMEs or multinational corporations (MNCs), are encouraged to enrich the current findings. Practical implications: If organisational growth is a priority, SME owner/managers should support employees' work and learning in a timely fashion. As the study finds, individual learning and inter-organisational learning are considered "a must to have" for employees, regardless of which stage the firm is at. When an SME enters high-growth, however, more opportunities for group learning are particularly beneficial. For mature SMEs, it is essential for learning to move towards systemisation and include a professional development component to meet employees’ career expectations, not just their work demands. Originality/value: The results advance the body of knowledge in SME learning from the life-cycle perspective. As one of the first studies in bridging these areas, it brings new implications to academic researchers and SME practitioners

    Plasma cholesterol levels and brain development in preterm newborns.

    BackgroundTo assess whether postnatal plasma cholesterol levels are associated with microstructural and macrostructural regional brain development in preterm newborns.MethodsSixty preterm newborns (born 24-32 weeks gestational age) were assessed using MRI studies soon after birth and again at term-equivalent age. Blood samples were obtained within 7 days of each MRI scan to analyze for plasma cholesterol and lathosterol (a marker of endogenous cholesterol synthesis) levels. Outcomes were assessed at 3 years using the Bayley Scales of Infant Development, Third Edition.ResultsEarly plasma lathosterol levels were associated with increased axial and radial diffusivities and increased volume of the subcortical white matter. Early plasma cholesterol levels were associated with increased volume of the cerebellum. Early plasma lathosterol levels were associated with a 2-point decrease in motor scores at 3 years.ConclusionsHigher early endogenous cholesterol synthesis is associated with worse microstructural measures and larger volumes in the subcortical white matter that may signify regional edema and worse motor outcomes. Higher early cholesterol is associated with improved cerebellar volumes. Further work is needed to better understand how the balance of cholesterol supply and endogenous synthesis impacts preterm brain development, especially if these may be modifiable factors to improve outcomes

    Differentiation of Patients with Balance Insufficiency (Vestibular Hypofunction) versus Normal Subjects Using a Low-Cost Small Wireless Wearable Gait Sensor

    Balance disorders present a significant healthcare burden due to the potential for hospitalization or complications for the patient, especially among the elderly population when considering intangible losses such as quality of life, morbidities, and mortalities. This work is a continuation of our earlier works where we now examine feature extraction methodology on Dynamic Gait Index (DGI) tests and machine learning classifiers to differentiate patients with balance problems versus normal subjects on an expanded cohort of 60 patients. All data was obtained using our custom designed low-cost wireless gait analysis sensor (WGAS) containing a basic inertial measurement unit (IMU) worn by each subject during the DGI tests. The raw gait data is wirelessly transmitted from the WGAS for real-time gait data collection and analysis. Here we demonstrate predictive classifiers that achieve high accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity in distinguishing abnormal from normal gaits. These results show that gait data collected from our very low-cost wearable wireless gait sensor can effectively differentiate patients with balance disorders from normal subjects in real-time using various classifiers. Our ultimate goal is to be able to use a remote sensor such as the WGAS to accurately stratify an individual’s risk for falls
