Shape selectivity in toluene disproportionation into para-xylene generated by chemical vapor deposition of tetramethoxysilane on MFI zeolite catalyst
Dependence of shape selectivity for para-xylene production by toluene disproportionation on conditions of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) of tetramethoxysilane on MFI (ZSM-5) zeolite were investigated in detail. The CVD after pelletization was necessary to obtain 0.7–1 mm particles with high selectivity. The influences of preparation conditions on the selectivity were investigated in detail to find the optimum conditions. The parent zeolite with small number of Brønsted acid sites on the external surface brought the high selectivity after the CVD. The catalyst prepared in the optimized conditions showed the selectivity 99.7% at ca. 10% of the toluene conversion
Assessment of maximal insertional torque of cervical and thoracic screws during posterior spinal surgery
Study Design : Multicenter intraoperative biomechanical analysis. Purpose : This study aimed to assess the maximal insertional torque (MIT) of lateral mass screw (LMS) and pedicle screw (PS) in the cervical or thoracic vertebrae during surgery. Methods : During posterior spinal fusion, cervical or thoracic multi-axial screws were placed at different cervical or thoracic levels and the MIT was recorded for each screw revolution using an analogue torque wrench. Screw number was as follows : 11 PS at C7, 134 LMS (C3-6) (Magerl technique, 70 ; Roy-Camille technique, 64), and 33 PS in the thoracic region. Results : Average MIT values (cNm) were as follows : for PS (diameter : 3.5 mm) at C7, 45.3±21.9 in men and 60.0±20.1 in women (p=0.28) ; for Magerl screws, 69.0±20.5 in men and 58.6±15.7 in women (p=0.13) ; and for Roy-Camille screws, 51.0±17.9 in men and 42.4±15.9 in women (p=0.52). The average MIT for Magerl screws was significantly higher than that for Roy-Camille screws in men and women (both p < 0.01). Conclusions : Intraoperative insertional torque could be a good indicator to evaluate the purchase and help guide decisions on screw type and insertion technique. Further postoperative assessments with sequential X-rays are needed to reveal the significance of MIT during posterior spinal fusion

Since Hippocrates (BC 460-375), general body massage applied to human body tissues has been in use as a treatment for relief of various health disorders. Nowadays, though, it is mostly considered to be in the category of purely empirical, but not scientifically founded, ancient oriental therapies, because of difficulties to define precisely the biological effects of general body massage that might be potentially beneficial. However, recent advances in industrial technology have contributed importantly to the experimental methodology, and from the general progress in the analysis of biological responses concepts have emerged which, when duly considered, may help to overcome the above-mentioned difficulties to provide a rational basis for massage effects within the framework of modern western medicine. In this review article, therefore, treatment methods of ancient historical origin will be related to concepts established by modern bio-medical science, such as the so-called Skin Pressure Reflex (Takagi K. & Sakurai T. 1950) and the Gate Control Theory (Melzack RD. & Wall PD. 1965). The mutual similarities between experimental procedures from which these scientifically founded concepts were derived, and the mechanical effects of massage, will be pointed out. This includes not only consideration of the functional phenomena experienced under massage treatment, but also the neural mechanisms that may be involved as candidates for the induction of the empirically postulated treatment effects. Such mechanisms are considered as potential modulators of CNS activities-including neuro-endocrine control-affecting neuromuscular, cardiovascular, respiratory, and endocrine functions. With special respect to general massage, observations will be discussed which have provided evidence in support of the effectiveness of general massage according to the scientific standards of modern western medicine
Suplatast tosilate alleviates nasal symptoms through the suppression of nuclear factor of activated T-cells-mediated IL-9 gene expression in toluene-2,4-diisocyanate-sensitized rats
Histamine H1 receptor (H1R) gene is upregulated in patients with pollinosis; its expression level is highly correlated with the nasal symptom severity. Antihistamines are widely used as allergy treatments because they inhibit histamine signaling by blocking H1R or suppressing H1R signaling as inverse agonists. However, long-term treatment with antihistamines does not completely resolve toluene-2,4-diisocyanate (TDI)-induced nasal symptoms, although it can decrease H1R gene expression to the basal level, suggesting additional signaling is responsible for the pathogenesis of the allergic symptoms. Here, we show that treatment with suplatast tosilate in combination with antihistamines markedly alleviates nasal symptoms in TDI-sensitized rats. Suplatast suppressed TDI-induced upregulation of IL-9 gene expression. Suplatast also suppressed ionomycin/phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate-induced upregulation of IL-2 gene expression in Jurkat cells, in which calcineurin (CN)/nuclear factor of activated T-cells (NFAT) signaling is known to be involved. Immunoblot analysis demonstrated that suplatast inhibited binding of NFAT to DNA. Furthermore, suplatast suppressed ionomycin-induced IL-9 mRNA upregulation in RBL-2H3 cells, in which CN/NFAT signaling is also involved. These data suggest that suplatast suppressed NFAT-mediated IL-9 gene expression in TDI-sensitized rats and this might be the underlying mechanism of the therapeutic effects of combined therapy of suplatast with antihistamine
Presence of vascular endothelial growth factor during the first half of IVM improves the meiotic and developmental competence of porcine oocytes from small follicles
The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) on the meiotic and developmental competence of porcine oocytes from small follicles (SF; 0.5-3mm diameter). When cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) from medium-sized follicles (MF; 3-6mm diameter) and SF were cultured for IVM, the maturation rates were significantly higher for oocytes from MF than SF. Concentrations of VEGF in the medium were significantly higher for COCs cultured from MF than SF. When COCs from SF were exposed to 200ngmL-1 VEGF during the first 20h of IVM, the maturation rate improved significantly and was similar to that of oocytes derived from MF. The fertilisability of oocytes was also significantly higher than that of VEGF-free SF controls. Following parthenogenetic activation, the blastocyst formation rate improved significantly when SF COC culture was supplemented with 200ngmL-1 VEGF, with the rate similar to that of oocytes from MF. The results of the present study indicate that VEGF markedly improves the meiotic and developmental competence of oocytes derived from SF, especially at a concentration of 200ngmL-1 during the first 20h of IVM
The ASTRO-H X-ray Observatory
The joint JAXA/NASA ASTRO-H mission is the sixth in a series of highly
successful X-ray missions initiated by the Institute of Space and Astronautical
Science (ISAS). ASTRO-H will investigate the physics of the high-energy
universe via a suite of four instruments, covering a very wide energy range,
from 0.3 keV to 600 keV. These instruments include a high-resolution,
high-throughput spectrometer sensitive over 0.3-2 keV with high spectral
resolution of Delta E < 7 eV, enabled by a micro-calorimeter array located in
the focal plane of thin-foil X-ray optics; hard X-ray imaging spectrometers
covering 5-80 keV, located in the focal plane of multilayer-coated, focusing
hard X-ray mirrors; a wide-field imaging spectrometer sensitive over 0.4-12
keV, with an X-ray CCD camera in the focal plane of a soft X-ray telescope; and
a non-focusing Compton-camera type soft gamma-ray detector, sensitive in the
40-600 keV band. The simultaneous broad bandpass, coupled with high spectral
resolution, will enable the pursuit of a wide variety of important science

Hybrid technique of cortical bone trajectory and pedicle screwing for minimally invasive spine reconstruction surgery : A technical note
The pedicle screw (PS) system is widely used for spinal reconstruction. Recently, screw insertion using the cortical bone trajectory (CBT) technique has been reported to provide increased holding strength of the vertebra, even in an osteoporotic spine. CBT is also beneficial due to its low invasiveness. We have been performing hybrid reconstruction with CBT at the cranial level and PS at the caudal level based on the concept of minimal invasiveness. We applied this hybrid technique to 6 cases of degenerative spondylolisthesis. Surgery was completed with a small skin incision of around 5-6 cm, which is shorter than that of the conventional PS procedure. The mean percent slippage before surgery was 19.8%, and this was reduced to 3.9% after surgery and almost maintained 3 months after surgery. Furthermore, no major surgical complications were observed. Here, we introduce the minimally invasive hybrid technique of CBT-PS. Surgeons should be aware of the procedure as an option for minimally invasive lumbar spine reconstructive surgery
Sequential therapies after atezolizumab plus bevacizumab or lenvatinib first-line treatments in hepatocellular carcinoma patients
Introduction: The aim of this retrospective proof-of-concept study was to compare different second-line treatments for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma and progressive disease (PD) after first-line lenvatinib or atezolizumab plus bevacizumab.Materials and methods: A total of 1381 patients had PD at first-line therapy. 917 patients received lenvatinib as first-line treatment, and 464 patients atezolizumab plus bevacizumab as first-line.Results: 49.6% of PD patients received a second-line therapy without any statistical difference in overall survival (OS) between lenvatinib (20.6 months) and atezolizumab plus bev-acizumab first-line (15.7 months; p = 0.12; hazard ratio [HR] = 0.80). After lenvatinib first-line, there wasn't any statistical difference between second-line therapy subgroups (p = 0.27; sorafenib HR: 1; immunotherapy HR: 0.69; other therapies HR: 0.85). Patients who under-went trans-arterial chemo-embolization (TACE) had a significative longer OS than patients who received sorafenib (24.7 versus 15.8 months, p < 0.01; HR = 0.64). After atezolizumab plus bevacizumab first-line, there was a statistical difference between second-line therapy subgroups (p < 0.01; sorafenib HR: 1; lenvatinib HR: 0.50; cabozantinib HR: 1.29; other therapies HR: 0.54). Patients who received lenvatinib (17.0 months) and those who under-went TACE (15.9 months) had a significative longer OS than patients treated with sorafenib (14.2 months; respectively, p = 0.01; HR = 0.45, and p < 0.05; HR = 0.46).Conclusion: Approximately half of patients receiving first-line lenvatinib or atezolizumab plus bevacizumab access second-line treatment. Our data suggest that in patients progressed to atezolizumab plus bevacizumab, the systemic therapy able to achieve the longest survival is lenvatinib, while in patients progressed to lenvatinib, the systemic therapy able to achieve the longest survival is immunotherapy
Adverse Events as Potential Predictive Factors of Activity in Patients with Advanced HCC Treated with Atezolizumab Plus Bevacizumab
Background In the context of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treated with systemic therapy, the correlation between the appearance of adverse events (AEs) and reported efficacy outcomes is well-known and widely investigated. From other pathological settings, we are aware of the prognostic and predictive value of the occurrence of immune-related AEs in patients treated with immune-checkpoint inhibitors. Objective This retrospective multicenter real-world study aims to investigate the potential prognostic value of AEs in patients with HCC treated with atezolizumab plus bevacizumab in the first-line setting. Patients and methods The study population consisted of 823 patients from five countries (Italy, Germany, Portugal, Japan, and the Republic of Korea). Results Of the patients, 73.3% presented at least one AE during the study period. The most common AEs were proteinuria (29.6%), arterial hypertension (27.2%), and fatigue (26.0%). In all, 17.3% of the AEs were grade (G) 3. One death due to bleeding was reported. The multivariate analysis confirmed the appearance of decreased appetite G < 2 [versus G >= 2; hazard ratio (HR) 0.60; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.13-0.90; p < 0.01] and immunotoxicity G < 2 (versus G >= 2; HR: 0.70; 95% CI 0.24-0.99; p = 0.04) as independent prognostic factors for overall survival, and the appearance of decreased appetite G < 2 (versus G >= 2; HR: 0.73; 95% CI 0.43-0.95; p = 0.01), diarrhea (yes versus no; HR: 0.57, 95% CI 0.38-0.85; p = 0.01), fatigue (yes versus no; HR: 0.82, 95% CI 0.65-0.95; p < 0.01), arterial hypertension G < 2 (versus G >= 2; HR: 0.68, 95% CI 0.52-0.87; p < 0.01), and proteinuria (yes versus no; HR: 0.79, 95% CI 0.64-0.98; p = 0.03) as independent prognostic factors for progression-free survival. Conclusions As demonstrated for other therapies, there is also a correlation between the occurrence of AEs and outcomes for patients with HCC for the combination of atezolizumab plus bevacizumab
