    Free Will and the Divergence Problem

    This paper presents what the authors call the ‘divergence problem’ regarding choosing between different future possibilities. As is discussed in the first half, the central issue of the problem is the difficulty of temporally locating the ‘active cause’ on the modal divergent diagram. In the second half of this paper, we discuss the ‘second-person freedom’ which is, strictly, neither compatibilist negative freedom nor incompatibilist positive freedom. The divergence problem leads us to two hypothetical views (i.e. the view of single-line determination and that of one-off chance), and these views bring humans closer to the afree side – i.e. outside of the contrast between being free and being unfree. The afree side is greatly different from the ordinary human side. This paper tries to secure the second-person freedom as a substitute for the ordinary human freedom while preventing the divergence problem from arising

    Compact and scalable polarimetric self-coherent receiver using dielectric metasurface

    The polarimetric self-coherent system using a direct-detection-based Stokes-vector receiver (SVR) is a promising technology to meet both the cost and capacity requirements of the short-reach optical interconnects. However, conventional SVRs require a number of optical components to detect the state of polarization at high speed, resulting in substantially more complicated receiver configurations compared with the current intensity-modulation-direct-detection (IMDD) counterparts. Here, we demonstrate a simple and compact polarimetric self-coherent receiver based on a thin dielectric metasurface and a photodetector array (PDA). With a single 1.05-μ\mum-thick metasurface device fabricated on a compact silicon-on-quartz chip, we implement functionalities of all the necessary passive components: a 1×\times3 splitter, three polarization beam splitters with different polarization bases, and six focusing lenses. Combined with a high-speed PDA, we demonstrate self-coherent transmission of 20-GBd 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) and 50-GBd quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) signals over a 25-km single-mode fiber. Owing to the surface-normal configuration, it can easily be scaled to receive spatially multiplexed channels from a multicore fiber or a fiber bundle, enabling compact and low-cost receiver modules for the future highly parallelized self-coherent systems.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures (main manuscript) + 2 pages, 2 figures (supplementary info

    Partially functional outer arm dynein in a novel Chlamydomonas mutant expressing a truncated γ heavy chain

    The outer dynein arm of Chlamydomonas flagella contains three heavy chains (α, β, and γ), each of which exhibits motor activity. How they assemble and cooperate is of considerable interest. Here we report the isolation of a novel mutant, oda2-t, whose γ heavy chain is truncated at about 30% of the sequence. While the previously isolated γ chain mutant oda2 lacks the entire outer arm, oda2-t retains outer arms that contain α and β heavy chains, suggesting that the N-terminal sequence (corresponding to the tail region) is necessary and sufficient for stable outer-arm assembly. Thin-section electron microscopy and image analysis localize the γ heavy chain to a basal region of the outer-arm image in the axonemal cross section. The motility of oda2-t is lower than that of the wild type and oda11 (lacking the α heavy chain) but higher than that of oda2 and oda4-s7 (lacking the motor domain of the β heavy chain). Thus, the outer-arm dynein lacking the γ heavy-chain motor domain is partially functional.     Magnetic anisotropy driven by ligand in 4d transition metal oxide SrRuO3

    The origin of magnetic anisotropy in magnetic compounds is a longstanding issue in solid state physics and nonmagnetic ligand ions are considered to contribute little to magnetic anisotropy. Here, we introduce the concept of ligand driven magnetic anisotropy in a complex transition-metal oxide. We conducted X ray absorption and X ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopies at the Ru and O edges in the 4d ferromagnetic metal SrRuO3. Systematic variation of the sample thickness in the range below 10 nm allowed us to control the localization of Ru 4d t2g states, which affects the magnetic coupling between the Ru and O ions. We found that the orbital magnetization of the ligand induced via hybridization with the Ru 4d orbital determines the magnetic anisotropy in SrRuO3

    Characterization of Tight Junctions and Their Disruption by UVB in Human Epidermis and Cultured Keratinocytes

    It has not been confirmed whether tight junctions (TJs) function as a paracellular permeability barrier in adult human skin. To clarify this issue, we performed a TJ permeability assay using human skin obtained from abdominal plastic surgery. Occludin, a marker protein of TJs, was expressed in the granular layer, in which a subcutaneously injected paracellular tracer, Sulfo-NHS-LC-Biotin (556.59Da), was halted. Incubation with ochratoxin A decreased the expression of claudin-4, an integral membrane protein of TJs, and the diffusion of paracellular tracer was no longer prevented at the TJs. These results demonstrate that human epidermis possesses TJs that function as an intercellular permeability barrier at least against small molecules (∼550Da). UVB irradiation of human skin xenografts and human skin equivalents (HSEs) resulted in functional deterioration of TJs. Immunocytochemical staining of cultured keratinocytes showed that occludin was localized into dot-like shapes and formed a discontinuous network when exposed to UVB irradiation. Furthermore, UVB irradiation downregulated the active forms of Rac1 and atypical protein kinase C, suggesting that their inactivation caused functional deterioration of TJs. In conclusion, TJs function as a paracellular barrier against small molecules (∼550Da) in human epidermis and are functionally deteriorated by UVB irradiation

    Hot carrier generation in two-dimensional silver nanoparticle arrays at different excitation wavelengths under on-resonant conditions

    We evaluated the hot carrier generation in two-dimensional (2D) silver nanoparticle (AgNP) arrays under light illumination at different wavelengths, 458, 532, 671, and 785 nm. The 2D AgNP arrays were tailored to match the plasmon resonance to each excitation wavelength in order to fulfill the on-resonant condition. We selected para-aminothiophenol (p-ATP) as a probe molecule, which is chemically transformed into 4,4'-dimercaptoazobenzene (DMAB) upon light illumination. The reaction is driven by hot carriers emitted from a plasmonic surface. For evaluation of hot carrier generation, we monitored the chemical transformation from p-ATP into DMAB with surface-enhanced Raman scattering. The normalized Raman intensity of DMAB was plotted against the total exposure, where the peak intensity increased as the total exposure increased because of the increase of the number of DMAB molecules. The saturation of the peak growth was observed, indicating that the chemical transformation was completed, at different exposures for each wavelength. The total exposure required for completing the chemical transformation was smaller at 458 nm by at least ~105 times than that at 785 nm, although the difference of the photon energy was only 1.7 times. The growth of the Raman peak was related to the laser intensity as well, where the higher laser intensity showed a more rapid growth. These results indicated that more hot carriers with sufficient energy for the chemical transformation were generated at shorter excitation wavelengths as well as at higher laser intensities

    Optic Perineuritis Associated with Nivolumab Treatment for Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

    We report the case of a 54-year-old man who was treated with nivolumab for recurrent squamous cell lung cancer. After 7 cycles of nivolumab treatment, the patient presented to our hospital with right eye vision loss. Gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging of the brain showed enhancement around the optic nerve sheath. This finding and his symptoms led to the diagnosis of optic perineuritis (OPN). Steroid pulse therapy was administered twice although there was no remarkable improvement in his visual field defect. The relationship between OPN and nivolumab is unclear. However, immune-related adverse events caused by immune checkpoint inhibitors should be considered

    Functional tooth number and mortality

    Aim: Previous studies on the association between intraoral conditions and mortality in community-dwelling older individuals reported that fewer present teeth (PT) are significant risk factors for mortality. However, how the number of PT relative to the number of functional teeth (FT), including both present and rehabilitated teeth, influences mortality has not been investigated fully. This study examined the impact of the number of FT on mortality among community-dwelling Japanese older adults. Methods: This study was a retrospective, observational and population-based follow-up study, which examined 1188 older individuals who participated in an annual geriatric health examination from 2009 to 2015. The average follow-up period was 1697.0 ± 774.5 days. The primary outcome was all-cause mortality at follow-up. The numbers of PT and FT of each participant were counted during an oral examination. In addition, demographics, clinical variables, blood nutrient markers, physical functions and perceived masticatory function were measured. Results: Kaplan–Meier analysis, followed by a log-rank test, revealed that fewer PT (P < 0.001) and FT (P = 0.002) were significantly associated with a reduced survival rate. Cox's proportional hazard analysis indicated that the number of FT, but not the number of PT, was a significant independent mortality risk factor after adjusting for demographics, clinical variables, nutrient markers and physical functioning (P = 0.036, hazard ratio: 2.089). Conclusions: Current results suggest that the number of FT more strongly predicts all-cause mortality than the number of PT among community-dwelling older adults. Further studies are necessary to consider the confounding of socioeconomic status and disability status

    Impact of number of functional teeth on independence of Japanese older adults

    Aim To examine the relationship between the number of present and functional teeth at baseline and future incidence of loss of independence. Methods Participants were community-dwelling older individuals who participated in a comprehensive geriatric health examination conducted in Kusatsu town, Japan, between 2009 and 2015. The primary endpoint was the incidence of loss of independence among participants, defined as the first certification of long-term care insurance in Japan. The numbers of present and functional teeth at baseline were determined via an oral examination. Demographics, clinical variables (e.g., history of chronic diseases and psychosocial factors), blood nutritional markers, physical functions, and perceived masticatory function were assessed. Results This study included 1121 individuals, and 205 individuals suffered from loss of independence during the follow-up period. Kaplan–Meier estimates of loss of independence for participants with smaller numbers of present and functional teeth were significantly greater than for those with larger numbers of teeth. Cox proportional hazard analyses indicated that a smaller number of present teeth was not a significant risk factor after adjusting for demographic characteristics. However, the number of functional teeth was a significant risk factor after the adjustment (hazard ratio: 1.975 [1.168–3.340]). Additionally, higher hazard ratios were observed in other adjusted models, but they were not statistically significant. Conclusions The number of functional teeth may be more closely related to the future incidence of loss of independence than the number of present teeth. This novel finding suggests that prosthodontic rehabilitation for tooth loss possibly prevents the future incidence of this life-event
