    Soft X-ray Absorption and Photoemission Studies of Ferromagnetic Mn-Implanted 3CC-SiC

    We have performed x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and resonant photoemission spectroscopy (RPES) measurements of Mn-implanted 3CC-SiC (3CC-SiC:Mn) and carbon-incorporated Mn5_{5}Si2_{2} (Mn5_{5}Si2_{2}:C). The Mn 2pp core-level XPS and XAS spectra of 3CC-SiC:Mn and Mn5_{5}Si2_{2}:C were similar to each other and showed "intermediate" behaviors between the localized and itinerant Mn 3dd states. The intensity at the Fermi level was found to be suppressed in 3CC-SiC:Mn compared with Mn5_{5}Si2_{2}:C. These observations are consistent with the formation of Mn5_{5}Si2_{2}:C clusters in the 3CC-SiC host, as observed in a recent transmission electron microscopy study.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Neuroimaging characteristics and growth pattern on magnetic resonance imaging in a 52-year-old man presenting with pituicytoma: a case report

    Abstract Introduction Pituicytoma is a rare neoplasm of the neurohypophysis. To the best of our knowledge there have been no reports of pituicytoma in which long-term magnetic resonance imaging observation was performed. We calculated the doubling time of the tumor volume and described the growth pattern of a pituicytoma. Case presentation A 52-year-old Japanese man with a history of decreased libido was found to have a sellar and suprasellar mass. He underwent transsphenoidal surgery, but only a small specimen was obtained because of intraoperative bleeding. The tentative histological diagnosis was schwannoma. He noticed bitemporal hemianopsia 7 years later. A follow-up magnetic resonance imaging disclosed a tumor volume doubling time of 3830 days. Transcranial gross-total tumor resection was performed. The lesion consisted of elongated and plump tumor cells that were arranged in a fascicular or storiform pattern and were positive for S-100 protein and focally positive for glial fibrillary acidic protein. The final histological diagnosis was pituicytoma. Conclusion Pituicytoma is a slow-growing tumor, but the growth rate may change during follow-up.</p

    自治体の地震防災行政の現場では、震度情報に基づいた対応がとられる。しかしそれ以上の詳細な地震情報が不足する場合が多い。本研究では、自治体行政の現場にいて詳細な地震情報に接し得る環境を整備する。そのシステムの試用をもとに、自治体防災担当者と地震研究者が連携協力し議論して、実際の地震防災に役立つ地震情報の構築と伝達手法を研究する。An earthquake information display system was installed in the disaster prevention crisis management division of the Tottori prefectural office. An environment was established in the disaster prevention administration, where detailed earthquake information could be understood.     AbstractFrom the 3D-structural analysis of the catalytic domain of chitinase A1, two exposed tryptophan residues (W122 and W134) are proposed to play an important role in guiding a chitin chain into the catalytic cleft during the crystalline chitin hydrolysis. Mutation of either W122 or W134 to alanine significantly reduced the hydrolyzing activity against highly crystalline β-chitin microfibrils. Double mutation almost completely abolished the hydrolyzing activity. On the other hand, the hydrolyzing activity against either soluble or amorphous substrate was not reduced. These mutations slightly impaired the binding activity of this enzyme. These results clearly demonstrated that the two exposed aromatic residues play a critical role in hydrolyzing the chitin chain in crystalline chitin
