Teacher Educators' Perspective on Preservice Teacher Preparation/ Coursework Provided to Engage Diverse Families for Student Learning

    No full text
Research shows that most teachers require more experience-based training in developing collaborative, relational, and reciprocal practices to build family partnerships. This study examines the preservice teacher preparation for working with diverse families in urban settings from an EC-6 teacher preparation program at a large urban university in the southwestern United States. The paper presents the faculty perspectives of kind of activities and experiences regarding engaging diverse families for student learning is provided to preservice teachers. The results showed that preservice teachers learned about family engagement primarily in early childhood courses taken in the beginning of the program and through the integration of related knowledge into existing courses, which were most commonly presented through assignments and classroom discussion. The study also found that the program incorporates the national standards on family engagement, but limited best practices are included in the coursework

Family engagement in children’s education is one of the key factors for student success in school, yet little attention has been paid in teacher preparation programs to enhance the knowledge, skills, and understanding of preservice teachers to involve families in their children’s learning. Research shows that most teachers require more experience-based training in developing collaborative, relational, and reciprocal practices to build family partnerships. The purpose of the study was to examine preservice teacher preparation for working with diverse families in urban settings from an EC-6 teacher preparation program at a large urban university in the southwestern United States. Using a mixed-method design of preservice teacher surveys, faculty interviews, and document analysis of course syllabi, the study explored the experiences of preservice teachers regarding family engagement, their perspective on their preparedness, and how research-based best practices and national standards regarding family engagement were incorporated in the program. The results indicated that only 29% of preservice teachers felt prepared to effectively partner with diverse families in an urban school environment. Research also revealed that of the six types of family involvement practices suggested in the literature review, promoting learning activities at home was the most frequently observed or participated during field experiences. Results showed that preservice teachers learned about family engagement primarily in early childhood courses taken in the beginning of the program and through the integration of related knowledge into existing courses, which were most commonly presented through assignments and classroom discussion. The study also found that the program incorporates the national standards on family engagement, but limited best practices are included in the coursework. These findings could be used as a platform for changes providing a more comprehensive teacher education program which prepares preservice teachers for family engagement thereby providing better learning outcomes for children.Curriculum and Instruction, Department o

A model to support decision for the valorization of public properties in disuse or underutilized

    No full text
With reference to the process of valorization of public properties in progress in many European countries, this paper develops an evaluation model to support decisions of Public Administrations involved in the identification of the best modality of enhancement (concession and lease or sale) of public properties in disuse and/or underutilized. Although the model can be applied to any type of public property, the research is focused on religious cultural buildings, that are common both in big cities and in smaller towns. The assumption underlying the model is that, since the properties considered are complex buildings, generally characterized by large dimensions, the form of bilateral monopoly market is always verified. The result is a model of simple use, exportable in any territorial context. The paper must be attributed in equal parts to the author

Building Investments for the Revitalization of the Territory: A Multisectoral Model of Economic Analysis

Following the crisis generated by the financialization of private realestate, construction prices have gradually decreased depriving the housing market of the necessary growth stimuli. Many countries have set up measures to revive this highly strategic area for the national economy. With reference to the Campania Region Law n. 19 dated 28 December 2009, known Housing Plan, this work has two objectives: to recognize the fundamental estimation problems that need to be solved in the implementation of the Campania Housing Plan; in addition, predict the effects of the regulations on the regional economy, both in overall terms as well as for each production sector, with particular attention being given to the construction industry. Regarding the first objective, the contents of the law are analysed on the basis of the principles that govern the appraisal. The consequences of the Campania Housing Plan on the economic system are then evaluated using input-output matrices, which are able to capture the structural relationships that exist among the various productive sectors. The numerical calculations require a preliminary investigation aimed at collecting a list of interventions approved by local governments in accordance to the Housing Plan. The cost of the works, as proposed in the applications submitted to the local administrations, is the input data for the implementation of the Social Accounting Matrix 2010 of the Campania Region
