Comparison of Flickr and Public Participation GIS to characterise the types, spatial patterns and socio-ecological drivers of social values for the Kimberley region

Coastal and marine environments are highly valued for the resources and services they provide. To sustainably manage these environments, we need to understand what people value and where these values occur, but spatial data is not always easily obtainable. Crowdsourcing methods such as the retrieval of geotagged photographs from the photo-sharing social media platform Flickr and Public Participation GIS (PPGIS) that use field-based or online mapping techniques enable the identification, quantification and mapping of social values. This study compared these methods to evaluate whether Flickr provides similar data to PPGIS about values and where they are likely to occur. A total of 5,293 geotagged Flickr photographs of the natural environment were retrieved for the Kimberley region in Western Australia. The relative abundance of the ten evaluated value types differed between Flickr and two previously published PPGIS datasets involving field-based interviews (p < 0.001) and an online survey (p < 0.001), but scenic/aesthetic and nature appreciation were highly valued in all studies. There were clear distinctions in the spatial patterns of where values were recorded; Flickr users tended to take photographs near easily-accessible locations, whereas PPGIS participants mapped values across most of the Kimberley coastline. Spatial modelling performed to investigate the distribution of value types revealed accessibility was the main driver to where Flickr users were likely to take photographs within the Kimberley region. In contrast, values mapped by PPGIS participants were more broadly distributed and therefore the models were less able to identify strong relationships with the evaluated drivers. Despite this, value types mapped by both methods were concentrated near the coastline and the few major towns of the region, likely due to these being familiar places and popular tourism destinations. Values crowdsourced through Flickr and PPGIS can be used together to take advantage of their reinforcing and complementary information. Whilst PPGIS enabled more value types to be identified within the study area and over a greater spatial distribution, Flickr can be used to provide further depth of information, such as insight into certain value types through photograph content analysis and by highlighting locations of visitation that may need management. The findings of this study can be valuable to inform future planning and management of coastal and marine environments, especially where spatial data may be limited

Knowledge, skills, and attitudes of renal nurses working with patients undergoing haemodialysis who fear needles

This item is only available electronically.Thousands of Australians living with end-stage kidney disease undergo haemodialysis at least three times per week to survive. The process involves the insertion and removal of two large needles into the veins of the arm each session. Although needle fear is common in patients undergoing haemodialysis, little research has been conducted that investigates appropriate strategies for minimising fear. Even less is known about how the renal nurses responsible for the insertion and removal of the needles work with fearful patients undergoing haemodialysis. Therefore, the focus of the present research is to identify the core knowledge, skills, and attitudes of renal nurses, and how they approach working with dialysis patients experiencing fear of needles. Seventeen pre-existing interviews with South Australian renal nurses were analysed via thematic analysis to explore the experiences of working with patients undergoing haemodialysis. Information was coded according to a competency framework, detailing thirty-six features of knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs) of nurses regarding the management of patientsā€™ needle fear. KSAs were then categorised to describe seven competencies pertinent to renal nursing and working with patients with fear of needles. Two main themes: Flexibility, and Responsibility, overarched all KSAs and competencies. The challenging and multi-faceted nature of needle fear was detailed by participants as a hindrance to effective care. Recommendations for continued professional development for renal nurses are suggested, highlighting the need for the education and resources specific to working with patients with needle fear. Findings are translatable across multiple healthcare settings, not only in renal nursing.Thesis (B.PsychSc(Hons)) -- University of Adelaide, School of Psychology, 202

Unique Considerations for Creating High School Musical Theatre Choreography

The purpose of this research study was to identify what unique considerations should be made when choreographing for high school musical theater. In this study, both directors and choreographers of musical theatre at the high school level were surveyed regarding the research questions. Research questions for this study were: 1) What special considerations need to be made when creating choreography for musical theater at the high school level? 2) What do directors of musical theater at the high school level expect of their choreographers? 3) What strategies do directors and choreographers of musical theater at the high school level use to divide responsibility for directing movement? There were a total of eighteen directors and fifteen choreographers who participated in the study with a variety of training and experience. Survey responses were then analyzed for common responses. The information gathered in this study can serve as a helpful resource to both directors and choreographers of musical theatre productions at the high school level as they navigate the process of collaboratively directing movement for their productions

Rewriting the narrative: Confronting Australiaā€™s past in order to determine our future

Since colonisation, history has been whitewashed to suit the socio-political aims of the settler. The $50 million redevelopment of the landing site of Captain Cook, disingenuously renamed the ā€˜Meeting Place Precinctā€™, is stark evidence of this. This essay argues that in order to arrive at a comprehensive understanding of history, Australia must engage in a process of national re-founding via truth-telling and active listening between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples respectively. Lesbian Neighbourhoods: The Disappearance and Displacement

Gay neighbourhoods, defined by their high concentration of gay men and unique culture, have seemingly become a staple in major cities in the United States, Canada, and Europe. Their notion of a ā€˜safe spaceā€™ has allowed gay men to socialize and find partners, initiate successful political movements and the protection of gender and sexuality rights, and be their authentic selves (Ghaziani, 2015). Geographers and sexuality scholars have been researching the implications of physical space and the importance of occupying neighbourhoods for gay men, as their gentrification and consumerist culture has drawn significant attention (Bell & Binnie, 2004). However, scholars have overlooked that while gay men have been creating neighbourhoods, so too have lesbians, with their formation and sense of community impacted by heteronormative and patriarchal boundaries. Throughout creating a systematic review on gay neighbourhoods, I noticed a lack of attention to valuable discourses about where lesbians occupy, why they occupy certain neighbourhoods and institutions, and how the transformation of the gay neighbourhood impacts the future of lesbian neighbourhoods. Moreover, those articles included in the review are rooted in feminist scholarship and extend the discussion beyond what is relevant to the initial study, which is why I have created this short review to discuss the history of lesbian neighbourhoods, their slow disappearance, and urge researchers to consider why lesbians patterns of occupying are changing

Adopting Law Firm Management Systems to Survive and Thrive: A Study of the Australian Approach to Management-Based Regulation

    Get PDF
In Australia, amendments to the Legal Profession Act require that incorporated legal practices (ILPs) take steps to assure compliance with provisions of the Legal Profession Act 2004. Specifically, the legislation provides that the ILP must appoint a legal practitioner director to be generally responsible for the management of the ILP. The ILP must also implement and maintain ā€œappropriate management systems to enable the provision of legal services in accordance with the professional obligations of legal practitioners. Because the new law did not define ā€œappropriate management systemsā€ (AMS) the Office of Legal Services Commissioner for New South Wales worked with representatives of other organizations and practitioners to develop guidelines and an approach for evaluating compliance with the statutory requirements. The collaboration resulted in an ā€œeducation toward complianceā€ strategy in which a designated director for an ILP completes a self-assessment process (SAP), evaluating the ILPā€™s compliance with ten specific objectives of sound legal practice. To evaluate the new regulatory regime, Professor Susan Fortney conducted a mixed method empirical study of incorporated law firms in New South Wales Australia. In Phase One of the study, all incorporated law firms with two or more solicitors were surveyed. In Phase Two, legal services directors were interested. This article discusses the survey findings, focusing on the relationship between the self-assessment process and the ethics norms, systems, conduct, and culture in firms
