    EAST: Energy Efficient Adaptive Scheme for Transmission in Wireless Sensor Networks

    In this paper, we propose Energy-efficient Adaptive Scheme for Transmission (EAST) in WSNs. EAST is IEEE 802.15.4 standard compliant. In this approach, open-loop is used for temperature-aware link quality estimation and compensation. Whereas, closed-loop feedback helps to divide network into three logical regions to minimize overhead of control packets on basis of Threshold transmitter power loss (RSSIloss) for each region and current number of neighbor nodes that help to adapt transmit power according to link quality changes due to temperature variation. Simulation results show that propose scheme; EAST effectively adapts transmission power to changing link quality with less control packets overhead and energy consumption compared to classical approach with single region in which maximum transmitter power assigned to compensate temperature variation

    Electron Correlation and the c-axis Dispersion of Cu d_z^2: a New Band Structure for High Temperature Superconductors

    Previously we showed the major effect of electron correlation in the cuprate superconductors is to lower the energy of the Cu d_x^2-y^2/O p_sigma (x^2-y^2) band with respect to the Cu d_z^2/O' p_z (z^2) band. In our 2D Hubbard model for La_1.85Sr_0.15CuO_4 (LaSCO), the z^2 band is narrow and crosses the standard x^2-y^2 band just below the Fermi level. In this work, we introduce c-axis dispersion to the model and find the z^2 band to have considerable anisotropic 3D character. An additional hole-like surface opens up in the z^2 band at (0,0,2pi/c) which expands with doping. At sufficient doping levels, a symmetry allowed x^2-y^2/z^2 band crossing along the (0,0)-(pi,pi) direction of the Brillouin zone appears at the Fermi level. At this point, Cooper pairs between the two bands (e.g. (k uparrow x^2-y^2/k downarrow z^2)) can form, providing the basis for the Interband Pairing Theory of superconductivity in these materials.Comment: submitted to Phys.     Hysterosalpingographic findings in infertile women: A seven year review

    Objectives: To review the hysterosalpingographic (HSG) findings in women investigated for infertility in a tertiary center in north eastern Nigeria.Materials and Methods: A retrospective review of HSG films of 272 women investigated for infertility between January 2000 and December 2006 were reviewed.Results: One hundred and thirty (47.8%) were investigated for primary infertility, while 142 (52.2%) were investigated for secondary infertility. Most of the women investigated for infertility by HSG had abnormal findings 192(70.6%). The most common pathology revealed among the infertile women was tuboperitoneal factor in 196 (72.1%) followed by uterine synechia in 35(12.9%). Seventeen (6.3%) had bilateral tubal block and 5 (1.8%) had bicornuate uterus.Conclusion: HSG is helpful in the investigation of infertile women

    Candidates contesting the elections Takalar in the imaging process, some things that must be understood in the campaign, the analysis of audience (audience) and their needs, goals and objectives, including strategic planning, communicators, channels (media), the message and the receiver, goal setting, implementation planning involved, the amount of funds, resources, and time of the campaign, as well as evaluating.This study aimed to determine (1) the use of communication media in shaping the image of the candidate regent and deputy regent district. Takalar in organizing the election Takalar 2012 and (2) the selection of communication media in the 2012 election Takalar. This type of research is descriptive qualitative exploration or exploration intends to make information on the purpose of research. Documentation and data sources such as interviews and observations associated with this research. The results showed that all candidates utilize existing media for dissemination in the regent and deputy regent election Takalar Takalar in 2012. And the selection of media used by candidates of differences in the production and dissemination of media in the region because of the team\u27s Takalar, party and budget. In the regent and deputy regent, followed 7 (seven) candidates, the pair number 2 (two) Burhanuddin. B pairs with Natsir Ibrahim carried by Golkar party won the most votes and was elected as a Regent and Regent Wakli Takalar the period 2012-2017 in the selection of the round. Unequal use of media for each candidate anggran factors and successful teamwork, and also should be planned as possible in the selection of the media in the election in order to avoid wasteful spending

    Perception of Senior High School EFL Teachers in Papua, Indonesia towards Their Own Competence

    This paper reports the competence of the English Foreign Language (EFL) Senior High School (SHS) teachers in Papua, Indonesia which sought to investigate the EFL SHS teachers’ perception towards their own competence. This cross-sectional survey research design applied multistage sampling technique in determining the sample of the study. There were 159 EFL SHS teachers from six selected townships in Papua as the sample. The researchers employed questionnaire and interview as the instrument for collecting data. Data were analyzed utilizing descriptive statistics to run for frequencies and percentages. The result revealed that the EFL SHS teachers in Papua perceived that their teacher competence was good. As the majority of the respondents (91.8%) contended that they possessed good competency and only a few of respondents (8.2%) claimed that their competence was very good. None of the respondents asserted either they have poor or fairly good competence

    Toxic Metals in Some Decorative Cosmetics and Nail Products: Analysis, Evaluation, and Mitigation

    Cosmetic marketing is one of the most profitable and fast increasing markets in Kurdistan Region of Iraq. In recent years, the use of cosmetics has witnessed a rapid increase, especially with the emergence of social media and its impact on this trade. The market is full of different cosmetic brands and nail products. Moderate and low-quality brands of cosmetic samples that available in the local markets were selected to investigate their heavy metals and chemical composition. Samples from face foundation, eye shadow, and nail polish products were taken and examined to evaluate the concentration of metals, that is, Hg, Pb, Cd, As, Mn, Cr, Ni, Co, Fe, Zn, Cu, and Al ions, using X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence techniques. The examination results show high concentrations of Fe and Al metals in the lipstick samples whereas the Hg, Cd, Cr, and Ni were out of detection limit. Moreover, the results show contamination of Hg heavy metal in one of the examined nail polishes brands, whereas the rest of foundation and eye shadow samples show a higher concentration of Al and Fe.     Sonographic evaluation of the common bile duct size in normal adults at university of maiduguri teaching hospital, Nigeria

    Despite ultrasound safety, affordability and its widespread use in evaluation of the diseases of biliary tree, paucity of literature on the sonographic measurements of the size of the normal adult common bile duct (CBD) in this environment exists. Objectives: To determine the normal adult diameter of the CBD in this environment using ultrasonography. Methods: This was a cross-sectional prospective study carried out at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital between January to June, 2011. Results: There were 224(56%) females and 176(44%) males aged between18 and 87 years (Mean±SD, 36.88 ±16.97 years). The mean AP and transverse CBD diameters (±SD) were 3.68±0.82mm and 3.89±0.86mm, respectively. The average mean for the two measurements (± SD) was 3.78±0.84mm (range = 2.0 – 6.0 mm). The mean transverse diameter was slightly greater than AP diameter (p = 0.0004).The CBD diameter was strongly correlated with age (r = 2 0.798; p = 0.000; r = 0.629). The least squares regression slope of 0.039mm±0.001 (mean±SD) was obtained suggesting 0.039mm±0.001 increase in the CBD diameter per year. There was significant correlation between the CBD diameter with weight (r = 0.504; p = 0.000) and BMI (r = 0.454; p = 0.000). No significant difference between the mean CBD diameter in males and females (p= 0.084)was observed. Conclusion: The mean and range of CBD size in normal adult population were determined and significantly correlated with age, weight, and BMI

    Establishment of a comprehensive epilepsy center in Pakistan: initial experiences, results, and reflections

    Background. Developing countries, home to 80% of epilepsy patients, do not have comprehensive epilepsy surgery programs. Considering these needs we set up first epilepsy surgery center in Pakistan. Methods. Seventeen teleconferences focused on setting up an epilepsy center at the Aga Khan University (AKU), Karachi, Pakistan were arranged with experts from the University of Alberta Hospital, Alberta, Canada and the University of West Virginia, USA over a two-year period. Subsequently, the experts visited the proposed center to provide hands on training. During this period several interactive teaching sessions, a nationwide workshop, and various public awareness events were organized. Results. Sixteen patients underwent surgery, functional hemispherectomy (HS) was done in six, anterior temporal lobectomy (ATL) in six, and neuronavigation-guided selective amygdalohippocampectomy (SAH) using keyhole technique in four patients. Minimal morbidity was observed in ATL and, SAH groups. All patients in SAH group (100%) had Grade 1 control, while only 5 patients (83%) in ATL group, and 4 patients (66%) in HS group had Grade 1 control according to Engel\u27s classification, in average followups of 12 months, 24 months and 48 months for SAH, ATL, and HS, respectively. Conclusion. As we share our experience we hope to set a practical example for economically constrained countries that successful epilepsy surgery centers can be managed with limited resources
