Secondary electric power generation with minimum engine bleed

    Get PDF
Secondary electric power generation with minimum engine bleed is discussed. Present and future jet engine systems are compared. The role of auxiliary power units is evaluated. Details of secondary electric power generation systems with and without auxiliary power units are given. Advanced bleed systems are compared with minimum bleed systems. A cost model of ownership is given. The difference in the cost of ownership between a minimum bleed system and an advanced bleed system is given

Systems study for an Integrated Digital-Electric Aircraft (IDEA)

    Get PDF
The results of the Integrated Digital/Electric Aircraft (IDEA) Study are presented. Airplanes with advanced systems were, defined and evaluated, as a means of identifying potential high payoff research tasks. A baseline airplane was defined for comparison, typical of a 1990's airplane with advanced active controls, propulsion, aerodynamics, and structures technology. Trade studies led to definition of an IDEA airplane, with extensive digital systems and electric secondary power distribution. This airplane showed an improvement of 3% in fuel use and 1.8% in DOC relative to the baseline configuration. An alternate configuration, an advanced technology turboprop, was also evaluated, with greater improvement supported by digital electric systems. Recommended research programs were defined for high risk, high payoff areas appropriate for implementation under NASA leadership

From the Frying Pan Into the Fire (and Back Again): Adventures in Subject-Based, Credit Instruction

My best experience as a teacher-librarian was leading a credit, semester-long course while a librarian at the University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) during which my students came to care deeply about the topical content and used their developing research skills to further their engagement.  For librarians, though, this is the exception rather than the [...

Resection, including transplantation, for hepatoblastoma and hepatocellular carcinoma: Impact on survival

Long-term survival in children with primary hepatic malignancies can not be expected without complete tumor resection. In the last ten years we have treated 21 children with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and 21 children with hepatoblastoma (HEP), with tumor extirpation our surgical goal. Operative treatment included partial hepatectomy ([PH] 20), either primary (10) or delayed (following chemotherapy) (10), total hepatectomy and orthotopic liver transplantation ([OLT] 13), or upper abdominal exenteration and multiple organ transplantation (2). Two patients had both PH and subsequent total hepatectomy and OLT. Overall survival was 48% ( 20 42), with 9 patients dying of progressive disease prior to removal of their tumor. HEP patient survival was 67% ( 14 21), including 2 of 6 who underwent primary PH, 7 of 8 who had delayed PH, and 5 of 6 who underwent OLT. Survival for the children with HCC was 29% ( 6 21), including 1 of 4 after primary PH, 1 of 2 following delayed PH, 3 of 7 following OLT, and 1 of 2 after exenteration and multiple organ transplantation. Preoperative chemotherapy facilitated removal of 10 initially unresectable tumors (8 HEP, 2 HCC) at a second-look procedure. Total hepatectomy and OLT markedly improved survival in patients with disease unresectable by standard methods. Partial hepatectomy, either primary or delayed, should be attempted in all children with hepatic malignancies. Total hepatectomy and OLT appears to be a viable adjunct in the treatment of childhood malignancies, and should be used for otherwise unresectable tumors as part of a carefully planned protocol. © 1992

In the long run there will be a change of the size and the structure of the german population because of mortality decline and birth rates below the reproduction level. In this projection we analyze the different effects of variations of fertility, mortality and migration flows on the population. We show, that immigration on a realistic level is not able to compensate the deficit of live births, but can alleviate the shrinking and ageing process of the german population. Without pronatalistic measures, higher than present birth rates are not expected. While, in our simulations, immigration and an increase in fertility could potentially stabilize the population size in the west, this will not occur in the eastern part of Germany. There, the net east-west migration leads to an additional population decline.

Impacting Information Literacy Learning in First-Year Seminars: A Rubric-Based Evaluation

The authors conducted a rubric assessment of information literacy (IL) skills in research papers across five undergraduate first-year seminar programs to explore the question “What impact does librarian intervention in first-year courses have on IL performance in student work?” Statistical results indicate that students in courses with greater levels of strategic faculty-librarian collaboration performed significantly better in IL outcomes than those in courses with low collaboration. Intensive librarian course support was not necessary to achieve significant learning gains; these tended to occur when librarians provided initial input into syllabus and assignment design, followed by one or two assignment-focused IL workshops

Mögliche Effekte des demographischen Wandels-Ein Überblick-

One of the more important influences shaping the future economic conditions of the highly industrialized countries is the decline and aging of their population. The article is a comprehensive survey of the impact of this development on key economic variables and the institutions of the welfare state. While the overall consequence of the aging process on productivity growth is more likely to be negative, there are also some offsetting forces like the increase in the capital intensity. The institutions of the welfare state, which are based on intergenerational transfers, will have to be reformed, in order to bring them in line with the demographic process. The prediction of a decrease in the rate of unemployment as a consequence of a declining labor force is according to our analysis not justified.
