    Lateralized difference in tympanic membrane temperature: emotion and hemispheric activity

    We review literature examining relationships between tympanic membrane temperature (TMT), affective/motivational orientation, and hemispheric activity. Lateralized differences in TMT might enable real-time monitoring of hemispheric activity in real-world conditions, and could serve as a corroborating marker of mental illnesses associated with specific affective dysregulation. We support the proposal that TMT holds potential for broadly indexing lateralized brain physiology during tasks demanding the processing and representation of emotional and/or motivational states, and for predicting trait-related affective/motivational orientations. The precise nature of the relationship between TMT and brain physiology, however, remains elusive. Indeed the limited extant research has sampled different participant populations and employed largely different procedures and measures, making for seemingly discrepant findings and implications. We propose, however, that many of these discrepancies can be resolved by considering how emotional states map onto motivational systems and further examining how validated methods for inducing lateralized brain activity might affect TMT

    Methods for eliciting and measuring behavioral and physiological consequences of stress and uncertainty in virtual reality

    Military operations are characterized by high levels of stress and uncertainty, and these states can influence cognitive and physical performance outcomes. These states, however, can be difficult to reliably induce in laboratory contexts, making it challenging to quantify and model their influences on perceptual and cognitive processes underlying performance on applied tasks. Herein we describe the development and validation of a novel scenario-based virtual reality methodology, the decision making under uncertainty and stress (DeMUS) scenario, that accomplishes four primary goals. First, it induces physiological and biochemical stress responses through a threat of shock manipulation. Second, it induces transient states of uncertainty by manipulating stimulus clarity in a perceptual decision-making task. Third, it generates several performance metrics regarding recognition memory, spatial orienting, threat classification, and marksmanship decision making. Finally, the task combines behavioral, physiological, and biochemical measures to provide a more comprehensive understanding of how stress and uncertainty influence applied task performance. To provide an initial validation of the scenario and its associated tasks and measures, we conducted a pilot study (n = 18) involving stress induction and cognitive performance assessment. Analyses revealed that: 1) the DeMUS scenario elicited tonic and phasic biochemical (salivary alpha amylase and cortisol) and physiological (heart rate, pupil diameter) stress responses, 2) the scenario elicited variable sympathetic autonomic nervous system and hypothalamic-pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis responses, and 3) stress influenced some measures of memory and decision-making in both negative and positive directions. Continuing research will assess individual- and group-level predictors of performance on these virtual reality tasks, and emerging performance enhancement techniques that can help military personnel sustain performance during stressful operations

    Modulating Applied Task Performance via Transcranial Electrical Stimulation

    Basic and applied research are increasingly adopting transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) for modulating perceptual, cognitive, affective, and motor processes. Industry and defense applications of tES hold potential for accelerating training and knowledge acquisition and sustaining work-related performance in the face of fatigue, workload, and stress. This mini-review article describes the promises and perils of tES, and reviews research testing its influence on two broad applied areas: sustaining and dividing attention, and operating in virtual environments. Also included is a discussion of challenges related to viable mechanistic explanations for tES effectiveness, attempts at replication and consideration of null results, and the potential importance of individual differences in predicting tES influences on human performance. Finally, future research directions are proposed to address these challenges and help develop a fuller understanding of tES viability for enhancing real-world performance

A range of international experts with diverse backgrounds, theoretical perspectives, and experimental methods contributed to the Topic. Contributions strongly reflect this diversity, ranging from examining pupil dilation in response to viewing Rembrandt portraits to understanding how caffeine supplementation influences levels of spatial processing. In all cases, the authors developed strong, empirically guided insights into the lateralized brain mechanisms underlying behavioral effects. Two primary themes emerge to guide and constrain continuing research

    Getting a Grip on Memory: Unilateral Hand Clenching Alters Episodic Recall

    Unilateral hand clenching increases neuronal activity in the frontal lobe of the contralateral hemisphere. Such hand clenching is also associated with increased experiencing a given hemisphere’s “mode of processing.” Together, these findings suggest that unilateral hand clenching can be used to test hypotheses concerning the specializations of the cerebral hemispheres during memory encoding and retrieval. We investigated this possibility by testing the effects of a unilateral hand clenching on episodic memory. The hemispheric Encoding/Retrieval Asymmetry (HERA) model proposes left prefrontal regions are associated with encoding, and right prefrontal regions with retrieval, of episodic memories. It was hypothesized that right-hand clenching (left hemisphere activation) pre-encoding, and left-hand clenching (right hemisphere activation) pre-recall, would result in superior memory. Results supported the HERA model. Also supported was that simple unilateral hand clenching can be used as a means by which the functional specializations of the cerebral hemispheres can be investigated in intact humans

    Left-handers are reputed to be shorter than right-handers. However, previous research has confounded handedness direction (left- versus right-handedness) with handedness strength (consistency with which one hand is chosen across a variety of tasks; consistent- versus inconsistent-handedness). Here, we support a relationship between handedness strength, but not direction, and stature, with increasing inconsistent-handedness associated with increasing self-reported height

    High and Mighty: Implicit Associations between Space and Social Status

    Figurative language and our perceptuo-motor experiences frequently associate social status with physical space. In three experiments we examine the source and extent of these associations by testing whether people implicitly associate abstract social status indicators with concrete representations of spatial topography (level versus mountainous land) and relatively abstract representations of cardinal direction (south and north). Experiment 1 demonstrates speeded performance during an implicit association test (Greenwald et al., 1998) when average social status is paired with level topography and high status with mountainous topography. Experiments 2 and 3 demonstrate a similar effect but with relatively abstract representations of cardinal direction (south and north), with speeded performance when average and powerful social status are paired with south and north coordinate space, respectively. Abstract concepts of social status are perceived and understood in an inherently spatial world, resulting in powerful associations between abstract social concepts and concrete and abstract notions of physical axes. These associations may prove influential in guiding daily judgments and actions

    Gender and autistic personality traits predict perspective-taking ability in typical adults

    Adopting another’s visual perspective is exceedingly common and may underlie successful social interaction and empathizing with others. The individual differences responsible for success in perspective-taking, however, remain relatively undiscovered. We assessed whether gender and autistic personality traits in normal college student adults predict the ability to adopt another’s visual perspective. In a task differentially recruiting VPT-1 which involves following another’s line of sight, and VPT-2 which involves determining how another may perceive an object differently given their unique perspective (VPT-2), we found effects of both gender and autistic personality traits. Specifically, we demonstrate slowed VPT-2 but not VPT-1 performance in males and females with relatively high ASD-characteristic personality traits; this effect, however was markedly stronger in males than females. Results contribute to knowledge regarding ASD-related personality traits in the general population and the individual differences modulating perspective-taking abilities
