Frustrated Rotations in Nematic Monolayers
Tabe and Yokoyama found recently that the optical axis in a chiral monolayer
of a ferronematic rotates when water evaporates from the bath: the chiral
molecules act as propellers. When the axis is blocked at the lateral walls of
the trough, the accumulated rotation inside creates huge splays and bends. We
discuss the relaxation of these tensions, assuming that a single dust particle
nucleates disclination pairs. For the simplest geometry, we then predict a long
delay time followed by a non-periodic sequence of ``bursts''. These ideas are

Nonequilibrium orientational patterns in two-component Langmuir monolayers
A model of a phase-separating two-component Langmuir monolayer in the
presence of a photo-induced reaction interconvering two components is
formulated. An interplay between phase separation, orientational ordering and
treaction is found to lead to a variety of nonequilibrium self-organized
patterns, both stationary and traveling. Examples of the patterns, observed in
numerical simulations, include flowing droplets, traveling stripes, wave

Nonequilibrium pattern formation in chiral Langmuir monolayers with transmembrane flows
Nonequilibrium Langmuir monolayers including a fraction of chiral molecules
and subject to transmembrane flow are considered. The flow induces coherent
collective precession of chiral molecules. Our theoretical study shows that
splay interactions in this system lead to spatial redistribution of chiral
molecules and formation of spiral waves and target patterns observed in
experiments
Theory of monolayers with boundaries: Exact results and Perturbative analysis
Domains and bubbles in tilted phases of Langmuir monolayers contain a class
of textures knows as boojums. The boundaries of such domains and bubbles may
display either cusp-like features or indentations. We derive analytic
expressions for the textures within domains and surrounding bubbles, and for
the shapes of the boundaries of these regions. The derivation is perturbative
in the deviation of the bounding curve from a circle. This method is not
expected to be accurate when the boundary suffers large distortions, but it
does provide important clues with regard to the influence of various energetic
terms on the order-parameter texture and the shape of the domain or bubble
bounding curve. We also look into the effects of thermal fluctuations, which

Polar Smectic Films
We report on a new experimental procedure for forming and studying polar
smectic liquid crystal films. A free standing smectic film is put in contact
with a liquid drop, so that the film has one liquid crystal/liquid interface
and one liquid crystal/air interface. This polar environment results in changes
in the textures observed in the film, including a boojum texture and a
previously unobserved spiral texture in which the winding direction of the
spiral reverses at a finite radius from its center. Some aspects of these
textures are explained by the presence of a Ksb term in the bulk elastic free

Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma with Marked Eosinophil Infiltration
We report a case of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) with marked eosinophil infiltration which was identified postoperatively in the esophageal wall in areas not surrounding the SCC. The eosinophil infiltration was seen in the submucosa, muscle and adventitia, but not in the mucosa. Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a pathological condition defined as eosinophil infiltration within the esophageal mucosa. Eosinophil infiltration at the invasion front of esophageal SCC is termed tumor-associated tissue eosinophilia (TATE). However, the eosinophil infiltration in this case may be pathologically different from both EoE and TATE. To our knowledge, this is the first report of esophageal SCC with eosinophil infiltration
Dipping-Induced Azimuthal Helix Orientation in Langmuir-Blodgett Monolayers of α-Helical Amphiphilic Diblock Copolypeptides
The azimuthal helix orientation of the rigid-rod amphiphilic diblock copolypeptides (PLGA-b-PMLGSLGs) of poly(α-L-glutamic acid) (PLGA) and poly(γ-methyl-L-glutamate-ran-γ-stearyl-L-glutamate) with 30 mol % of stearyl substituents (PMLGSLG) in Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayers was investigated using polarized transmission Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The relative position of dipping with respect to the previous transfer position can be used to manipulate the azimuthal orientation of the helices parallel to or tilted by an angle of 45° with respect to the dipping direction in the transferred films. The study of the azimuthal order for the LB monolayers of PLGA-b-PMLGSLGs of various block lengths revealed that the observed effect arises mainly from the deformation of the PMLGSLG top brush layer, induced by the flow orientation around the transfer region. In those cases where the PMLGSLG block is tilted by a sufficiently large angle with respect to the surface normal, high azimuthal order parameters of 0.5-0.75 were obtained.
Characterization of coagulase-negative staphylococcal isolates from blood with reduced susceptibility to glycopeptides and therapeutic options
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) are a major cause of nosocomial blood stream infection, especially in critically ill and haematology patients. CoNS are usually multidrug-resistant and glycopeptide antibiotics have been to date considered the drugs of choice for treatment. The aim of this study was to characterize CoNS with reduced susceptibility to glycopeptides causing blood stream infection (BSI) in critically ill and haematology patients at the University Hospital Tor Vergata, Rome, Italy, in 2007.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Hospital microbiology records for transplant haematology and ICU were reviewed to identify CoNS with elevated MICs for glycopeptides, and isolates were matched to clinical records to determine whether the isolates caused a BSI. The isolates were tested for susceptibility to new drugs daptomicin and tigecycline and the genetic relationship was assessed using f-AFLP.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Of a total of 17,418 blood cultures, 1,609 were positive for CoNS and of these, 87 (5.4%) displayed reduced susceptibility to glycopeptides. Clinical review revealed that in 13 cases (7 in haematology and 6 in ICU), CoNS with reduced susceptibility to glycopeptides were responsible for a BSI. <it>Staphylococcus epidermidis </it>was the causative organism in 11 instances and <it>Staphylococcus haemolyticus </it>in 2. The incidence of oxacillin resistance was high (77%), although all isolates remained susceptible to linezolid, daptomycin and tigecycline. Fingerprinting of CoNS identified one clonal relationship between two isolates.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Multi-resistant CoNS with reduced susceptibility to glycopeptides, although still relatively infrequent in our hospital, are emerging pathogens of clinical concern. Surveillance by antibiotyping with attention to multi-resistant profile, and warning to clinicians, is necessary.</p
