Characteristic Basis Function Method for Solving Electromagnetic Scattering Problems over Rough Terrain Profiles

the characteristic basis function method (CBFM), the
physical optics (PO) approach (when applicable) with the forward
backward method (FBM), is applied for the investigation of electromagnetic
scattering from—and propagation over—large-scale
rough terrain problems. The algorithm utilizes high-level basis
functions defined on macro-domains (blocks), called the characteristic
basis functions (CBFs) that are constructed by aggregating
low-level basis functions (i.e., conventional sub-domain basis functions).
The FBM as well as the PO approach (when applicable)
are used to construct the aforementioned CBFs. The conventional
CBFM is slightly modified to handle large-terrain problems, and
is further embellished by accelerating it, as well as reducing its
storage requirements, via the use of an extrapolation procedure.
Numerical results for the total fields, as well as for the path loss
are presented and compared with either measured or previously
published reference solutions to assess the efficiency and accuracy
of the algorithm
An extended mixed-integer programming formulation and dynamic cut generation approach for the stochastic lot sizing problem
We present an extended mixed-integer programming formulation of the stochastic lot-sizing problem for the static-dynamic uncertainty strategy. The proposed formulation is significantly more time efficient as compared to existing formulations in the literature and it can handle variants of the stochastic lot-sizing problem characterized by penalty costs and service level constraints, as well as backorders and lost sales. Also, besides being capable of working with a predefined piecewise linear approximation of the cost function-as is the case in earlier formulations-it has the functionality of finding an optimal cost solution with an arbitrary level of precision by means of a novel dynamic cut generation approach
A Testpart for Interdisciplinary Analyses in Micro Production Engineering
AbstractIn 2011, a round robin test was initiated within the group of CIRP Research Affiliates. The aim was to establish a platform for linking interdisciplinary research in order to share the expertise and experiences of participants all over the world. This paper introduces a testpart which has been designed to allow an analysis of different manufacturing technologies, simulation methods, machinery and metrology as well as process and production planning aspects. Current investigations are presented focusing on the machining and additive processes to produce the geometry, simulation approaches, machine analysis, and a comparison of measuring technologies. Challenges and limitations regarding the manufacturing and evaluation of the testpart features by the applied methods are discussed.Video abstrac
A cyclic nucleotide-gated channel (CNGC16) in pollen is critical for stress tolerance in pollen reproductive development
Cyclic nucleotide-gated channels (CNGCs) have been implicated in diverse aspects of plant growth and development, including responses to biotic and abiotic stress, as well as pollen tube growth and fertility. Here, genetic evidence identifies CNGC16 in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) as critical for pollen fertility under conditions of heat stress and drought. Two independent transfer DNA disruptions of cngc16 resulted in a greater than 10-fold stress-dependent reduction in pollen fitness and seed set. This phenotype was fully rescued through pollen expression of a CNGC16 transgene, indicating that cngc16-1 and 16-2 were both loss-of-function null alleles. The most stress-sensitive period for cngc16 pollen was during germination and the initiation of pollen tube tip growth. Pollen viability assays indicate that mutant pollen are also hypersensitive to external calcium chloride, a phenomenon analogous to calcium chloride hypersensitivities observed in other cngc mutants. A heat stress was found to increase concentrations of 3′,5′-cyclic guanyl monophosphate in both pollen and leaves, as detected using an antibody-binding assay. A quantitative PCR analysis indicates that cngc16 mutant pollen have attenuated expression of several heat-stress response genes, including two heat shock transcription factor genes, HsfA2 and HsfB1. Together, these results provide evidence for a heat stress response pathway in pollen that connects a cyclic nucleotide signal, a Ca(2+)-permeable ion channel, and a signaling network that activates a downstream transcriptional heat shock response
Epidemics in Adaptive Social Networks with Temporary Link Deactivation
Disease spread in a society depends on the topology of the network of social contacts. Moreover, individuals may respond to the epidemic by adapting their contacts to reduce the risk of infection, thus changing the network structure and affecting future disease spread. We propose an adaptation mechanism where healthy individuals may choose to temporarily deactivate their contacts with sick individuals, allowing reactivation once both individuals are healthy. We develop a mean-field description of this system and find two distinct regimes: slow network dynamics, where the adaptation mechanism simply reduces the effective number of contacts per individual, and fast network dynamics, where more efficient adaptation reduces the spread of disease by targeting dangerous connections. Analysis of the bifurcation structure is supported by numerical simulations of disease spread on an adaptive network. The system displays a single parameter-dependent stable steady state and non-monotonic dependence of connectivity on link deactivation rate
Comparison of Combination Posterior Sub-Tenon Triamcinolone and Modified Grid Laser Treatment with Intravitreal Triamcinolone Treatment in Patients with Diffuse Diabetic Macular Edema
PURPOSE: To compare the efficacy of posterior sub-Tenon's capsule triamcinolone acetonide injection combined with modified grid macular photocoagulation (PSTI + MP) with intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide (IVTA) injection in the treatment of diffuse diabetic macular edema (DME).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty eyes of 33 patients with diffuse DME were randomly allocated into either PSTI + MP (20 eyes) or IVTA (20 eyes). Best corrected visual acuity (VA) and foveal thickness were measured.
RESULTS: The ETDRS scores at baseline were 25.2 +/- 13.6 (mean +/- SD) letters in the PSTI + MP group, whereas 21.7 +/- 16.3 letters in the IVTA group. The ETDRS scores improved by 33.2 +/- 15.9, 34.7 +/- 16.6 and 30.9 +/- 19.0 letters in the PSTI + MP group whereas by 30.9 +/- 15.4, 30.1 +/- 17.9 and 31.5 +/- 15.0 letters in the IVTA group at 1, 3, and 6 months after the treatments, respectively. The VA improved significantly at 1 month and 3 months after both treatments (all p 0.05, Student's t-test). The foveal thicknesses at baseline and 1, 3, and 6 months after the treatments were 382.8 +/- 148.3, 309.1 +/- 131.3, 319.3 +/- 93.3, 340.4 +/- 123.5 microm (mean +/- SD) in the PSTI + MP group vs. 369.1 +/- 123.1, 241.4 +/- 52.3, 277.5 +/- 137.4, 290.2 +/- 127.9microm in the IVTA group, respectively. Pairwise comparisons revealed significant decrease in foveal thickness at 1 month (p = 0.01, paired t-test) for the PSTI + MP group, and at both 1 month (p 0.05, Student's t-test). In contrast to the PSTI + MP group, where no complications were noted, the elevation of intra-ocular pressure in 3 of 20 eyes (15%) and a significant increase in average cataract grading were observed in the IVTA group.
CONCLUSION: PSTI + MP treatment provides significant improvement of vision in patients with diffuse DME over 3 months, and achieves outcomes comparable to those after IVTA treatment, however, with fewer complications.ope
