    Integrated open source architectural design for high density housing with computational control and management engineering the paradoxes of chinese housing architecture

    Session V (Room D): Methodology IHousing is a collection of individual units based on negotiation between global standardization by the designers and local customization by the users after occupation. Due to the economic, industrial and time constrains, it is impossible to reflect users’ different needs in the design stage for high density housing. In response to this challenge, this research paper argues that the high density housing design can adopt the individual customization by the users in the design stage without paying significantly extra cost, hence the design process could be an open-ended evolutionary and transparent process rather than deterministic execution. To overcome the deficiency in addressing the future uncertainty by different users and the one-off development without the interactive mechanism for users’ feedback in the sub-sequential housing design and procurement, This essay proposes Integrated Open Source Design for Architecture (IOSDA) for housing design practice based on collective data and parametric connectivity between the end users and the designers, discussing how to integrate top-down mechanism with designer’s empirical inputs and the bottom-up ecosystems with users’ participation in high density housing design. IOSDA reflects a different attitude to design the future, which shifts from heroic prediction of the future to engaging the present grassroots, from board proactive reaction to the capacities for new possibilities.postprin

Design rules and logics can be formulated to generate various design solutions, also known as rule-based design process. In addition, mass housing design ought to be a complex process that involves not only the architects, developers and contractors, but also ideally, includes the users. In reality, however, the users are always excluded during the design process as there is no such a system that provides simple, effective and feasible design communication mechanisms. This meta-paper aims to collates and presents all possible parameters that are affiliated with mass housing. It will explore into various levels of scales from urban to building-units to map out the interconnected relationships.     Direct multiple shoot induction and plant regeneration from dormant buds of Codonopsis pilosula (Franch.) Nannf.

    An efficient and reproducible protocol for in vitro plant multiplication system via direct organogenesis from dormant buds of Codonopsis pilosula Nannf was developed. Multiple shoots were induced at a frequency of 75% after nine weeks on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with BAP (1.0 mg/l), NAA (0.5 mg/l), 3% sucrose and 0.7% agar. Approximately, 15 to 18 shoots were formed at the base of each dormant bud. Higher concentrations of BAP and NAA resulted in callus formation. Further development of shoot elongation and multiplication were also studied. Well-grown shoots of 2.8 cm height and 3.8 proliferation coefficient were achieved by sub-culturing on MS medium supplemented with 0.2 mg/l BAP and 0.05 mg/l IBA. At higher concentrations, BAP (0.5 mg/l) promoted higher shoot proliferation coefficient (4.2); however, it negatively affected shoot elongation. Further, low NAA concentration was beneficial to shoot proliferation. All in vitro-derived shoots measuring 2.5 to 3 cm in length, rooted when grown on ½MS (half of all MS elements) basal medium containing 1.5 mg/l IBA within 3 weeks, 100% of shoots developed roots and test-tube seedlings grew stout.Key words: Codonopsis pilosula, dormant bud, direct organogenesis, multiple shoot, shoot elongation, rooting

    A multi-centre cohort study evaluating the role of Inflammatory Markers In patient’s presenting with acute ureteric Colic (MIMIC)

    BACKGROUND: Spontaneous Stone Passage (SSP) rates in acute ureteric colic range from 47–75%. There is conflicting evidence on the role of raised inflammatory markers in acute ureteric colic. The use of an easily applicable biomarker that could predict SSP or need for intervention would improve the management of obstructing ureteric stones. Thus, there is a need to determine in an appropriately powered study, in patients who are initially managed conservatively, which factors at the time of acute admission can predict subsequent patient outcome such as SSP and the need for intervention. Particularly, establishing whether levels of white cell count (WBC) at presentation are associated with likelihood of SSP or intervention may guide clinicians on the management of these patients’ stones. DESIGN: Multi-center cohort study disseminated via the UK British Urology Researchers in Surgical Training (BURST) and Australian Young Urology Researchers Organisation (YURO). PRIMARY RESEARCH QUESTION: What is the association between WBC and SSP in patients discharged from emergency department after initial conservative management? PATIENT POPULATION: Patients who have presented with acute renal colic with CT KUB evidence of a solitary ureteric stone. A minimum sample size of 720 patients across 15 centres will be needed. HYPOTHESIS: A raised WBC is associated with decreased odds of spontaneous stone passage. PRIMARY OUTCOME: The occurrence of SSP within six months of presentation with acute ureteric colic (YES/NO). SSP was defined as absence of need for intervention to assist stone passage STATISTICAL ANALYSIS PLAN: A multivariable logistic regression model will be constructed, where the outcome of interest is SSP using data from patients who do not undergo intervention at presentation. A random effect will be used to account for clustering of patients within hospitals/institutions. The model will include adjustments for gender, age as control variables

    Communication tools in the COVID-19 era and beyond which can optimise professional practice and patient care

    Following the outbreak of the novel SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19), the World Health Organization made a number of recommendations regarding the utilisation of healthcare services. In general, there has been a reduction in elective healthcare services including outpatient clinics, diagnostic services and elective surgery. Inevitably these reductions for all but the most urgent clinical work will have a detrimental impact on patients, and alternative ways of working including the use of telemedicine may help to mitigate this. Similarly, electronic solutions may enable clinicians to maintain inter and intra-professional working in both clinical and academic settings. Implementation of electronic solutions to minimise direct patient contact will be new to many clinicians, and the sheer number of software solutions available and varying functionality may be overwhelming to anyone unfamiliar with ‘virtual communication’. In this article, we will aim to summarise the variety of electronic communication platforms and tools available for clinicians and patients, detailing their utility, pros and cons, and some 'tips and tricks' from our experience through our work as an international research collaborative

    Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder medication consumption in 64 countries and regions from 2015 to 2019: a longitudinal study

    Background: Timely recognition and appropriate treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are essential to enhance long-term outcomes of individuals with ADHD. This study aimed to evaluate the multinational trends and patterns of ADHD medication consumption. Methods: In this longitudinal trend study, we used pharmaceutical sales data of ADHD medication from the IQVIA-Multinational Integrated Data Analysis System between 2015 and 2019, covering 64 countries across the world. Consumption rates of ADHD medication were expressed as defined daily dose per 1000 child and adolescent inhabitants (aged 5–19) per day (DDD/TID). Linear mixed models were used to estimate the multinational, regional, and income level trend changes. Findings: The results showed that multinational ADHD medication consumption increased by +9.72% (95% confidence interval [CI], +6.25%, +13.31%) per year, from 1.19 DDD/TID in 2015 to 1.43 DDD/TID in 2019 across the 64 countries with marked differences between geographical locations. When stratified by countries’ income levels, increases in ADHD medication consumption were observed in high-income countries but not in middle-income countries. In 2019, the pooled consumption rates of ADHD medication were 6.39 DDD/TID (95% CI, 4.63, 8.84) in high-income countries, 0.37 DDD/TID (95% CI, 0.23, 0.58) in upper-middle-income countries and 0.02 DDD/TID (95% CI, 0.01, 0.05) in lower-middle-income countries. Interpretation: Current ADHD prevalence estimates and rates of ADHD medication consumption in most middle-income countries are lower than the global epidemiological prevalence. It is therefore imperative to evaluate the potential barriers to diagnosis and treatment in these countries to minimise the risk of negative outcomes from undiagnosed and untreated ADHD.     Gene expression drives the evolution of dominance.

    Dominance is a fundamental concept in molecular genetics and has implications for understanding patterns of genetic variation, evolution, and complex traits. However, despite its importance, the degree of dominance in natural populations is poorly quantified. Here, we leverage multiple mating systems in natural populations of Arabidopsis to co-estimate the distribution of fitness effects and dominance coefficients of new amino acid changing mutations. We find that more deleterious mutations are more likely to be recessive than less deleterious mutations. Further, this pattern holds across gene categories, but varies with the connectivity and expression patterns of genes. Our work argues that dominance arises as a consequence of the functional importance of genes and their optimal expression levels
