    HBF4 Catalysed Nucleophilic Substitutions of Propargylic Alcohols

    The activity of HBF4 (aqueous solution) as a catalyst in propargylation reactions is presented. Diverse types of nucleophiles were employed in order to form new C–O, C–N and C–C bonds in technical acetone and in air. Good to excellent yields and good chemoselectivities were obtained using low acid loading (typically 1 mol-%) under simple reaction conditions

    The mechanical and electrical properties of direct-spun carbon nanotube mats

    The mechanical and electrical properties of a direct-spun carbon nanotube mat are measured. The mat comprises an interlinked random network of nanotube bundles, with approximately 40 nanotubes in a bundle. A small degree of in-plane anisotropy is observed. The bundles occasionally branch, and the mesh topology resembles a 2D lattice of nodal connectivity slightly below 4. The macroscopic in-plane tensile response is elasto-plastic in nature, with significant orientation hardening. In-situ microscopy reveals that the nanotube bundles do not slide past each other at their junctions under macroscopic stain. A micromechanical model is developed to relate the macroscopic modulus and flow strength to the longitudinal shear response of the nanotube bundles.     Updated clinical recommendations for the use of tibolone in Asian women

    Tibolone, which is indicated for the relief of climacteric symptoms and the prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women, has a tissue-specific mode of action different to that of conventional hormone replacement therapy (HRT). A large proportion of Asian postmenopausal women experience symptoms that most frequently include musculoskeletal pain, insomnia, forgetfulness, hot flushes and sexual dysfunction, and there is a need to address their specific requirements. Recent studies show that, in comparison to HRT, tibolone is as effective in alleviating menopausal symptoms and preventing bone loss, has a greater positive effect on sexual dysfunction and is associated with less vaginal bleeding, but it is rarely mentioned in guidelines for menopausal treatment. Levels of awareness amongst women about treatments for menopausal symptoms vary between Asian countries but, even in countries where awareness is high, HRT usage is much lower than in the West. To provide a practical approach to the use of tibolone in Asian postmenopausal women, a panel of experts in the management of menopause from 11 Asia Pacific countries has developed recommendations for its use, based on the evidence from clinical studies published since 2005. However, as much of the clinical data reviewed are from international studies, the recommendations and the treatment algorithm presented here are widely applicable

    Reliability and Physiological Interpretation of Pulmonary Gas Exchange by "Circulatory Equivalents" in Chronic Heart Failure

    Peak ratios of pulmonary gas-exchange to ventilation during exercise (V˙O2/V˙E and V˙CO2/V˙E, termed "circulatory equivalents") are sensitive to heart failure (HF) severity, likely reflecting low and/or poorly distributed pulmonary perfusion. We tested whether peak V˙O2/V˙E and V˙CO2/V˙E would: (1) distinguish HF patients from controls; (2) be independent of incremental exercise protocol; and (3) correlate with lactate threshold (LT) and ventilatory compensation point (VCP), respectively.Twenty-four HF patients (61±11 years) with reduced ejection fraction (31±8%) and 11 controls (63±7 years) performed ramp-incremental cycle ergometry. Eighteen HF patients also performed slow (5±1 W/min), medium (9±4 W/min), and fast (19±6 W/min) ramps. Peak V˙O2/V˙E and V˙CO2/V˙E from X-Y plot, and LT and VCP from 9-panel plot, were determined by 2 independent, blinded, assessors. Peak V˙O2/V˙E (31.2±4.4 versus 41.8±4.8 mL/L; P<0.0001) and V˙CO2/V˙E (29.3±3.0 versus 36.9±4.0 mL/L; P<0.0001) were lower in HF than controls. Within individuals, there was no difference across 3 ramp rates in peak V˙O2/V˙E (P=0.62) or V˙CO2/V˙E (P=0.97). Coefficient of variation (CV) in peak V˙O2/V˙E was lower than for LT (5.1±2.1% versus 8.2±3.7%; P=0.014), and coefficient of variation in peak V˙CO2/V˙E was lower than for VCP (3.3±1.8% versus 8.7±4.2%; P<0.001). In all participants, peak V˙O2/V˙E was correlated with, but occurred earlier than, LT (r2=0.94; mean bias, -0.11 L/min), and peak V˙CO2/V˙E was correlated with, but occurred earlier than, VCP (r2=0.98; mean bias -0.08 L/min).Peak circulatory equivalents during exercise are strongly associated with (but not identical to) LT and VCP. Peak circulatory equivalents are reliable, objective, effort-independent indices of gas-exchange abnormality in HF

    The Deep Poincare Map: A Novel Approach for Left Ventricle Segmentation

    Precise segmentation of the left ventricle (LV) within cardiac MRI images is a prerequisite for the quantitative measurement of heart function. However, this task is challenging due to the limited availability of labeled data and motion artifacts from cardiac imaging. In this work, we present an iterative segmentation algorithm for LV delineation. By coupling deep learning with a novel dynamic-based labeling scheme, we present a new methodology where a policy model is learned to guide an agent to travel over the image, tracing out a boundary of the ROI – using the magnitude difference of the Poincaré map as a stopping criterion. Our method is evaluated on two datasets, namely the Sunnybrook Cardiac Dataset (SCD) and data from the STACOM 2011 LV segmentation challenge. Our method outperforms the previous research over many metrics. In order to demonstrate the transferability of our method we present encouraging results over the STACOM 2011 data, when using a model trained on the SCD dataset

    Human facial neural activities and gesture recognition for machine-interfacing applications

    The authors present a new method of recognizing different human facial gestures through their neural activities and muscle movements, which can be used in machine-interfacing applications. Human–machine interface (HMI) technology utilizes human neural activities as input controllers for the machine. Recently, much work has been done on the specific application of facial electromyography (EMG)-based HMI, which have used limited and fixed numbers of facial gestures. In this work, a multipurpose interface is suggested that can support 2–11 control commands that can be applied to various HMI systems. The significance of this work is finding the most accurate facial gestures for any application with a maximum of eleven control commands. Eleven facial gesture EMGs are recorded from ten volunteers. Detected EMGs are passed through a band-pass filter and root mean square features are extracted. Various combinations of gestures with a different number of gestures in each group are made from the existing facial gestures. Finally, all combinations are trained and classified by a Fuzzy c-means classifier. In conclusion, combinations with the highest recognition accuracy in each group are chosen. An average accuracy >90% of chosen combinations proved their ability to be used as command controllers

    Catalyst‐mediated enhancement of carbon nanotube textiles by laser irradiation: Nanoparticle sweating and bundle alignment

    The photonic post-processing of suspended carbon nanotube (CNT) ribbons made by floating catalyst chemical vapor deposition (FC-CVD) results in selective sorting of the carbon nanotubes present. Defective, thermally non-conductive or unconnected CNTs are burned away, in some cases leaving behind a highly crystalline (as indicated by the Raman G:D ratio), highly conductive network. However, the improvement in crystallinity does not always occur but is dependent on sample composition. Here, we report on fundamental features, which are observed for all samples. Pulse irradiation (not only by laser but also white light camera flashes, as well as thermal processes such as Joule heating) lead to (1) the sweating-out of catalyst nanoparticles resulting in molten catalyst beads of up to several hundreds of nanometres in diameter on the textile surface and (2) a significant improvement in CNT bundle alignment. The behavior of the catalyst beads is material dependent. Here, we show the underlying mechanisms of the photonic post-treatment by modelling the macro- and microstructural changes of the CNT network and show that it is mainly the amount of residual catalyst which determines how much energy these materials can withstand before their complete decomposition.</jats:p

    Bioacoustics and biophysical analysis of a newly described highly transparent genus of predatory katydids from the Andean cloud forest (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae: Meconematinae: Phlugidini)

    Transparency is a greatly advantageous form of camouflage, allowing species to passively avoid detection regardless of the properties of the surface which they occupy. However, it is uncommon and poorly understood in terrestrial species. In one tribe of predacious katydids (Phlugidini), transparency is paired with highly ultrasonic communication for increased predator evasion, yet little is known about the singing capabilities of these species, with only one genus of Phlugidini acoustically well described to date. Here, we describe Speculophlugis hishquten new genus and species of highly transparent crystal katydid species from the Andean cloud forest, discussing the potential use of this species for non-invasive studies of internal anatomy, and analysing its ultrasonic call. Using laser Doppler vibrometry and light microscopy techniques, we found the transparency of the cuticle around the hearing apparatus to be 85-87 % at the wavelength of the laser beam (633 nm), making S. hishquten a candidate for the highest recorded cuticle transparency of any insect. The male song has a fundamental frequency of 50 kHz, matching both the ultrasonic call range and rapid call structure of other Phlugidini species. However, the extent of ultrasonic communication and the level of transparency across the Phlugidini tribe requires more attention

    Patient experience of nasal obstruction and its clinical assessment

    BACKGROUND: The correlation between objective and subjective nasal obstruction is poor, and dissatisfaction rates after surgery for nasal obstruction are high. Accordingly, novel assessment techniques may be required. This survey aimed to determine patient experience and preferences for the measurement of nasal obstruction. METHOD: Prospective survey of rhinology patients. RESULTS: Of 72 questionnaires distributed, 60 were completed (response rate of 83 per cent). Obstruction duration (more than one year) (χ2 = 13.5, p = 0.00024), but not obstruction severity, affected willingness to spend more time being assessed. Questionnaires (48 per cent) and nasal inspiratory peak flow measurement (53 per cent) are the most commonly used assessment techniques. Forty-nine per cent of participants found their assessment unhelpful in understanding their obstruction. Eighty-two per cent agreed or strongly agreed that a visual and numerical aid would help them understand their blockage. CONCLUSION: Many patients are dissatisfied with current assessment techniques; a novel device with visual or numerical results may help. Obstruction duration determines willingness to undergo longer assessment
