    Dinia aeagrus mostrou-se, desde o inicio deste trabalho, espécie das mais interessantes, pela grande variação que apresenta, tanto morfologica como cromática, a ponto de ter sido considerada, até hoje, como duas espécies. Embora alguns autores tivessem admitido a possibilidade de Dinia aeagrus, ou seus sinônimos, ser realmente uma única espécie, não deixavam de atribuir-lhe dois ou mais nomes, em atenção aos característicos cromáticos. Isso mostra o quanto é importante o estudo morfológico nos grupos de lepidopteros em que os característicos cromáticos costumam monopolizar a atenção dos estudiosos, levando-os a conclusões menos corretas. Foi-nos necessário examinar grande numero de exemplares e das mais diversas proveniências geográficas, para que fosse apreciada com segurança a grande variabilidade da espécie genotípica, e de seu estudo avaliar as características genéricas. Conseguimos reunir de diversas coleções material proveniente de toda a região neotropical, o que nos permitiu levar a bom termo a pesquisa que nos propuséramos ha alguns anos.     Short synthetic peptides corresponding to sequences of complementarity-determining regions (CDRs) from different immunoglobulin families have been shown to induce antimicrobial, antiviral and antitumor activities regardless of the specificity of the original monoclonal antibody (mAb). Presently, we studied the in vitro and in vivo antitumor activity of synthetic peptides derived from conserved CDR sequences of different immunoglobulins against human tumor cell lines and murine B16F10-Nex2 melanoma aiming at the discovery of candidate molecules for cancer therapy. Four light-and heavy-chain CDR peptide sequences from different antibodies (C36-L1, HA9-H2, 1-H2 and Mg16-H2) showed cytotoxic activity against murine melanoma and a panel of human tumor cell lineages in vitro. Importantly, theyalso exerted anti-metastatic activity using a syngeneic melanoma model in mice. Other peptides (D07-H3, MN20v1, MS2-H3) were also protective against metastatic melanoma, without showing significant cytotoxicity against tumor cells in vitro. in this case, we suggest that these peptides may act as immune adjuvants in vivo. As observed, peptides induced nitric oxide production in bone-marrow macrophages showing that innate immune cells can also be modulated by these CDR peptides. the present screening supports the search in immunoglobulins of rather frequent CDR sequences that are endowed with specific antitumor properties and may be candidates to be developed as anti-cancer drugs.     Goals scored and received in 5vs4 GK game strategy are constrained by critical moment and situational variables in elite futsal

    The aim of this study was to identify the importance and meaning of goals using the goalkeeper as an outfield player in elite futsal according to critical and situational variables. The sample consisted of 11,446 actions corresponding to 1,325 matches from the 1st division Spanish Futsal League during the seasons from 2010 to 2015. Multinomial logistic regression and classification tree multivariate models were used to identify the best predictor variables related to the likelihood of scoring goals, receiving goals, or no goals. Results from Multinomial logistic regression emphasised goals scored in balanced matches and playing with the goalkeeper as an outfield player before the last eight minutes. When the teams were drawing or losing, finished with goals received or without goals. The classification tree results identified a greater likelihood of scoring goals when the teams were winning, in balanced matches, and within the last eight minutes. Conversely, a greater likelihood of suffering goals was observed using the goalkeeper as an outfield player when the teams were losing, in unbalanced matches and in the last eight minutes. The identified trends will allow futsal coaches to recognise the most suitable situations for achieving efficacy when using the goalkeeper as an outfield player strategy.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Comparison between two race/skin color classifications in relation to health-related outcomes in Brazil

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>This paper aims to compare the classification of race/skin color based on the discrete categories used by the Demographic Census of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) and a skin color scale with values ranging from 1 (lighter skin) to 10 (darker skin), examining whether choosing one alternative or the other can influence measures of self-evaluation of health status, health care service utilization and discrimination in the health services.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This is a cross-sectional study based on data from the World Health Survey carried out in Brazil in 2003 with a sample of 5000 individuals older than 18 years. Similarities between the two classifications were evaluated by means of correspondence analysis. The effect of the two classifications on health outcomes was tested through logistic regression models for each sex, using age, educational level and ownership of consumer goods as covariables.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Both measures of race/skin color represent the same race/skin color construct. The results show a tendency among Brazilians to classify their skin color in shades closer to the center of the color gradient. Women tend to classify their race/skin color as a little lighter than men in the skin color scale, an effect not observed when IBGE categories are used. With regard to health and health care utilization, race/skin color was not relevant in explaining any of them, regardless of the race/skin color classification. Lack of money and social class were the most prevalent reasons for discrimination in healthcare reported in the survey, suggesting that in Brazil the discussion about discrimination in the health care must not be restricted to racial discrimination and should also consider class-based discrimination. The study shows that the differences of the two classifications of race/skin color are small. However, the interval scale measure appeared to increase the freedom of choice of the respondent.</p

    A criação dos insetos da ordem Mantodea vem sendo objeto de pesquisas de um dos autores (Travassos Filho), desde 1942, já tendo publicado algumas observações (7, 8, 9, 10 e 11). Embora até o presente tivessem sido criadas muitas espécies, com os respectivos dados bionômico devidamente registrados, a oportunidade para uma analise completa e inicio de publicação dessas observações só surgiu recente[1]mente, com a vinda para o Departamento de Zoologia, da biologista co-autora deste artigo (Heitzmann), que vem se dedicando ao estudo morfológico dos mantodeos adultos e suas formas evolutivas, particularmente as exuvias, com objetivo de verificação dos caracteres que possam servir à sistemática desses curiosos insetos (4 e 5)

    A novel microtubule de-stabilizing complementarity-determining region C36L1 peptide displays antitumor activity against melanoma in vitro and in vivo

    Short peptide sequences from complementarity-determining regions (CDRs) of different immunoglobulins may exert anti-infective, immunomodulatory and antitumor activities regardless of the specificity of the original monoclonal antibody (mAb). In this sense, they resemble early molecules of innate immunity. C36L1 was identified as a bioactive light-chain CDR1 peptide by screening 19 conserved CDR sequences targeting murine B16F10-Nex2 melanoma. The 17-amino acid peptide is readily taken up by melanoma cells and acts on microtubules causing depolymerization, stress of the endoplasmic reticulum and intrinsic apoptosis. At low concentrations, C36L1 inhibited migration, invasion and proliferation of B16F10-Nex2 cells with cell cycle arrest at G2/M phase, by regulating the PI3K/Akt signaling axis involving Rho-GTPase and PTEN mediation. Peritumor injection of the peptide delayed growth of subcutaneously grafted melanoma cells. Intraperitoneal administration of C36L1 induced a significant immune-response dependent anti-tumor protection in a syngeneic metastatic melanoma model. Dendritic cells stimulated ex-vivo by the peptide and transferred to animals challenged with tumor cells were equally effective. The C36 VL CDR1 peptide is a promising microtubule-interacting drug that induces tumor cell death by apoptosis and inhibits metastases of highly aggressive melanoma cells

    Characterization of an ecto-ATPase activity in Cryptococcus neoformans

    Cryptococcus neoformans is the causative agent of pulmonary cryptococcosis and cryptococcal meningoencephalitis, which are major clinical manifestations in immunosuppressed patients. in the present study, a surface ATPase (ecto-ATPase) was identified in C. neoformans yeast cells. Intact yeasts hydrolyzed adenosine-5'-triphosphate (ATP) at a rate of 29.36 +/- 3.36 nmol Pi/h x 10(8) cells. in the presence of 5 mM MgCl2, this activity was enhanced around 70 times, and an apparent K-m for Mg-ATP corresponding to 0.61 mM was determined. Inhibitors of phosphatases, mitochondrial Mg2+-ATPases, V-ATPases, Na+-ATPases or P-ATPases had no effect on the cryptococcal ATPase, but extracellular impermeant compounds reduced enzyme activity in living cells. ATP was the best substrate for the cryptococcal ecto-enzyme, but it also efficiently hydrolyzed inosine 5'-triphosphate (ITP), cytidine 5'-triphosphate (CTP), guanosine 5'-triphosphate (GTP) and uridine-5'-triphosphate (UTP). in the presence of ATP, C. neoformans became less susceptible to the antifungal action of fluconazole. Our results are indicative of the occurrence of a C. neoformans ectoATPase that may have a role in fungal physiology. (c) 2005 Federation of European Microbiological Societies.
