    Path Planning Problems with Side Observations-When Colonels Play Hide-and-Seek

    Resource allocation games such as the famous Colonel Blotto (CB) and Hide-and-Seek (HS) games are often used to model a large variety of practical problems, but only in their one-shot versions. Indeed, due to their extremely large strategy space, it remains an open question how one can efficiently learn in these games. In this work, we show that the online CB and HS games can be cast as path planning problems with side-observations (SOPPP): at each stage, a learner chooses a path on a directed acyclic graph and suffers the sum of losses that are adversarially assigned to the corresponding edges; and she then receives semi-bandit feedback with side-observations (i.e., she observes the losses on the chosen edges plus some others). We propose a novel algorithm, EXP3-OE, the first-of-its-kind with guaranteed efficient running time for SOPPP without requiring any auxiliary oracle. We provide an expected-regret bound of EXP3-OE in SOPPP matching the order of the best benchmark in the literature. Moreover, we introduce additional assumptions on the observability model under which we can further improve the regret bounds of EXP3-OE.     Developmental regulation of the heat shock response by nuclear transport factor karyopherin-α3

    During early stages of Drosophila development the heat-shock response cannot be induced. It is reasoned that the adverse effects on cell cycle and cell growth brought about by Hsp70 induction must outweigh the beneficial aspects of Hsp70 induction in the early embryo. Although the Drosophila heat shock transcription factor (dHSF) is abundant in the early embryo it does not enter the nucleus in response to heat shock. In older embryos and in cultured cells the factor is localized within the nucleus in an apparent trimeric structure that binds DNA with high affinity. The domain responsible for nuclear localization upon stress resides between residues 390 and 420 of the dHSF. Using that domain as bait in a yeast two-hybrid system we now report the identification and cloning of a Drosophila nuclear transport protein karyopherin-α3 (dKap-α3). Biochemical methods demonstrate that the dKap-α3 protein binds specifically to the dHSF’s nuclear localization sequence (NLS). Furthermore, the dKap-α3 protein does not associate with NLSs that contain point mutations, which are not transported in vivo. Nuclear docking studies also demonstrate specific nuclear targeting of the NLS substrate by dKap-α3. Consistant with previous studies demonstrating that early Drosophila embryos are refractory to heat shock as a result of dHSF nuclear exclusion, we demonstrate that the early embryo is deficient in dKap-α3 protein through cycle 12. From cycle 13 onward the transport factor is present and the dHSF is localized within the nucleus thus allowing the embryo to respond to heat shock

    Time-Dependent Model for Evaluating Corrosion Potential and Electrical Resistivity of Reinforced Concrete

    The main work presented in this paper is to propose prediction models for estimating electrical resistivity of concrete and corrosion potential of steel in reinforced concrete. The prediction models for electrical resistivity of concrete (r) and corrosion potential of steel (Ecorr) incorporated hydration degree (αHyd (t)), pozzolanic reaction degree (αPoz (t)), porosity (PCap (t)) and chloride content ([CL-]). Predicted results were verified with results of experimental measurement. An experimental program was run for 1 year with various concrete mix proportions. According to the results, corrosion resistance of concrete increased with time as the degree of hydration increased. Further, the introduction of fly ash offered a good corrosion resistance, which also increased with time. Lastly, the existence of chloride ions in the concrete weakened passive film on steel surface, by the fact that its presence eased the movement of ions in the concrete and increased the risk of corrosion

    Moments of the generalized hyperbolic distribution

    In this paper we demonstrate a recursive method for obtaining the moments of the generalized hyperbolic distribution. The method is readily programmable for numerical evaluation of moments. For low order moments we also give an alternative derivation of the moments of the generalized hyperbolic distribution. The expressions given for these moments may be used to obtain moments for special cases such as the hyperbolic and normal inverse Gaussian distributions.     An implementation of rotor speed observer for sensorless induction motor drive in case of machine parameter uncertainty

    The paper describes observers using model reference adaptive system for sensorless induction motor drive with the pulse width modulator and the direct torque control under the circumstances of incorrect information of induction motor parameters. An approximation based on the definition of the Laplace transformation is used to obtain initial values of the parameters. These values are utilized to simulate sensorless control structures of the induction motor drive in Matlab-Simulink environment. Performance comparison of two typical observers is carried out at different speed areas and in presence of parameter uncertainty. A laboratory stand with the induction motor drive and load unit is set up to verify the properties of observers. Experimental results confirm the expected dynamic properties of selected observer

    Exploring the effect of R&D support, green technology transfer, sustainable innovation

    This article investigates the impact of R&D support on sustainable innovation through the mediating role of green technology transfer. Based on our analysis of data from 220 firms in Vietnam, we find the following: (1) R&D support has a positive impact on green technology transfer, (2) green technology transfer mediates the relationship between R&D support and sustainable innovation, and (3) The influence of green technology transfer on sustainable innovation is heightened in the presence of a firm's commitment to environmental ethics. These findings underline the critical role of government R&D funding in shaping sustainable innovation in emerging markets. The findings further show the crucial role of environmental commitment as a moderating factor in green technology transfer contexts. Managing the interaction between green technology transfer and a firm's commitment to environmental ethics is essential to optimize the benefits of sustainable innovation. This study offers practical insights for firms seeking to improve their sustainable innovation outcomes
