    The new lymphotropic herpesviruses (HHV-6, HHV-7, HHV-8) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) in human lymphoproliferative diseases: An overview

    Considerable evidence has been accumulating in favor of a possible involvement of viral agents in the pathogenesis of human lymphomas. The most recent proposal for a lymphoma classification, the Revised European-American Classification, emphasized for the first time the pathogenetic importance of two viruses, namely Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and human T lymphotropic virus I (HTLV-I) in the development of certain lymphoid neoplasias. However, in the last ten years new viral agents possibly related to lymphoproliferative activity have been discovered: three herpesviruses [human herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6), -7 (HHV-7) and -8 (HHV-8)] and a flavivirus, HCV. HHV-6 was isolated from the peripheral blood of patients with lymphomas and a possible role for this beta-herpesvirus in Hodgkin's disease and in angioimmunoblastic lymphadenopathy (AILD) has emerged from serological and molecular studies. HHV-7, a beta-herpesvirus genetically close to HHV-6, has not yet been found in a human disease but it utilizes CD4 as a receptor on the lymphocyte surface. Only partial HHV-8 genomic sequences have been identified so far, suggesting a genetic homology with members of the gamma-herpesvirus family, including EBV. HHV-8 sequences have been identified for the first time in all forms of Kaposi's sarcoma as well as in a variety of lymphoid disorders, including body-cavity-based non Hodgkin's lymphomas, Castleman's disease, AILD and a type of HIV-negative reactive lymphadenopathy with peculiar histologic features. Finally, after its identification as the major cause of post-transfusion and sporadic non-A, non-B hepatitis, HCV has revealed a lymphotropism both in vitro and in vivo. A strong association between HCV infection and a benign lymphoproliferative disease, essential mixed cryoglobulinemia type II, has clearly emerged both from serological and molecular studies. A possible role for this viral infection in B-cell non Hodgkin's lymphomas not associated with cryoglobulinemia has also been proposed recently. The present work offers an overview of the huge amount of experimental and clinical observations supporting the possible involvement of these new lymphotropic viruses in human lymphoproliferative diseases

    As a consequence of the economic crisis caused by the covid-19 Pandemic, Italy and other member States of the European Union have suffered considerable economic damage. To redress this situation, the European Commission authorized the return of a large amount of financial resources to European countries, in the form of loans and subsidies, as means for implementing the Next Generation EU, an ambitious program allowing member States to launch significant public spending policies. According to these initiatives, Italy adopted the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), which includes six primary missions to modernize the country. The second mission, called the green revolution and ecological transition, is one of the pillars of the EU Next Generation project and constitutes an essential guideline for the future development of the country.Como consecuencia de la crisis económica provocada por la pandemia, Italia y los otros países de la Unión Europea han sufrido considerables daños económicos. Por esta razón, la Comisión Europea ha decidido remediar dicha situación mediante la devolución de una gran cantidad de recursos financieros, en forma de préstamos y subvenciones, a través de la adopción del Next Generation EU, un ambicioso programa con el que todos los países europeos están llamados a poner en marcha importantes políticas de gasto público. En la aplicación del Next Generation EU, Italia adoptó el Plan Nacional de Recuperación y Resiliencia (PNRR), que incluye seis misiones principales con las que se pretende renovar el país, modernizándolo y preparándolo para afrontar los retos de los próximos años.     Efficacy of imatinib mesylate as maintenance therapy in adults with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in first complete remission

    Seven Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Ph+ALL) patients in first complete remission received maintenance therapy with imatinib alone. Two-year progression-free survival was 75%. Quantitative polymerase-chain-reaction (qPCR) monitoring of BCR-ABL showed that: (i) persisting molecular complete response (CR) was associated with long-lasting CR; (ii) molecular relapse did not invariably mean hematologic relapse; (iii) only the wide and rapid increment of BCR-ABL values was predictive of leukemia relapse

    Food contamination with fungal secondary metabolites has been a major limit for population wellness and development in the past. Although today social protection against this plague has been established in most countries, there are still many areas in the world where mycotoxin contamination causes illness and even death, due to the lack of healthy conditions for the storage of commodities. Information and knowledge are the main weapons available to contrast the danger of food contamination by mycotoxins. In several instances, information about the severity of the issue alone would have been effective in preventing cases of acute intoxications. Prevention is the winning strategy not only at the level of the end consumer, but also as far as the production is concerned. Thanks to the advances in the understanding of fungal epidemiology and mycotoxin synthesis, strategies for the prevention or at least for the limitation of mycotoxin contaminations have been developed in recent years. As far as cereal production in Italy is concerned, proper storage conditions are now widely adopted, and protocols for good practice in cultivation are being followed by an increasing number of producers. In addition, rapid methods for the early detection of contaminants and quality assessment have been developed and, when introduced in the routine field operation, may lead to substantial improvements of product quality

    Ground Resistance of Buried Metallic Parts in Urban Areas: an Extensive Measurement Campaign

    In urban and industrial areas, a relevant presence of buried metallic objects (e.g., gas and water pipes, etc.) can be detected. Usually, these elements are imagined as widespread meshed metallic grids in a good contact with the soil. In the last years, an arising interest on their role in the identification of a global earthing system has been expressed by the scientific community. Unfortunately, the geometrical and electrical properties of this kind of buried metallic parts cannot be provided by any documentations. This is mostly due to the fact that no trustworthy schemes are provided, as the management of these metallic parts is responsibility of different companies, which have installed them during several years. In order to characterize the buried metallic elements with reference to the electrical safety issue, the main quantity of interest is their resistance to earth. With this aim, a field measurement campaign was organized and the resistance to earth of more than 800 metallic objects has been evaluated through a simplified measurement protocol.     Global Earthing System: Can Buried Metallic Structures Significantly Modify the Ground Potential Profile?

    Global earthing systems (GESs), which are created by the interconnection of local earthing systems, should guarantee the absence of dangerous touch voltages. According to international standards, one of the reasons for this safety characteristic of GESs is that medium-voltage and low-voltage grounding systems form a quasi-equipotential area. Typical examples of GESs are in city centers due to the high number of interconnected grounding systems in the area. For this reason, in addition to ground grids, other metallic parts with different primary functions shall be also considered, e.g., water and gas pipes, tramway tracks, and building foundations can modify the electric potential distribution in the area. In this paper, a model based on the Maxwell's subareas method (MaSM) is used to evaluate how buried metallic parts, which are not intentionally connected to ground grids, modify the electric potential on the soil surface. First, the MaSM model is validated with experimental measurements on a simple electrode configuration. The measured voltages are compared with the MaSM results and with the results obtained with a finite-element method model simulated with COMSOL Multiphysics. Then, the simulations are carried out on a realistic urban test case

    Fatal herpesvirus-6 encephalitis in a recipient of a T-cell-depleted peripheral blood stem cell transplant from a 3-loci mismatched related donor

    Human herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6), like all the other herpes viruses, remains latent in host cells after primary infection but can be reactivated In immuno-compromised patients causing fever, skin rash, bone marrow (BM) suppression, pneumonitis, Sinusitis and meningoencephalitis. We describe the case of a man with chronic myelogenous leukemia who developed encephalitis associated with acute graft-versus-host disease two months after a T-cell-depleted mismatched peripheral blood stem cell transplant. Magnetic resonance images of the brain revealed multiple bilateral foci of signal abnormality. HHV-6 was the only pathogen detected in cerebrospinal fluid by PCR. treatment with both ganciclovir and foscarnet was unsuccessful and the patient gradually deteriorated and died. Other cases of HHV-6 encephalitis after bone marrow transplantation are reviewed
