Entre a crítica textual e a crítica genética: um exemplo

O poeta António Nobre deixou-nos dois volumes póstumos: Despedidas, publicado em 1902 e reunindo a produção poética de 1895 a 1899, e Primeiros Versos, dado ao prelo em 1921 e incluindo textos do período compreendido entre 1882 e 1889. Sendo a edição de 1921 uma edição póstuma, não há informações precisas sobre o modo como reuniu e ordenou o acervo, nem sobre a identidade do seu editor. Para esclarecer as dúvidas e corrigir as falhas, há necessidade de uma edição crítico-genética que irá estabelecer o texto, cientificamente correcto, cujo modelo exemplificarei com um poema concret

Lost in translation? From "O Escravo" to "A Ilha dos Escravos"

A adaptação de obras literárias para o cinema coloca uma série complexa de questões teóricas e práticas que vêm sendo discutidas de há muito. O problema é mais grave quando a distância do livro ao filme consiste na passagem da época colonial para a pós-colonial e o realizador opta por uma transformação abrupta da trama e contornos das personagens, dando ao filme uma orientação diferente daquela que caracterizava o romance. Este artigo aborda o caso de Francisco Manso, conhecido realizador e produtor português, cuja filmografia inclui a adaptação de obras literárias cabo-verdianas: é o caso de O testamento do Senhor Nepumoceno da Silva Araújo (1997), A ilha dos escravos (2008) e Os dois irmãos (2018). O artigo foca o segundo filme, sustentando que não se trata de uma tradução incorreta de O Escravo, romance pioneiro de José Evaristo d'Almeida publicado em 1856.The adaptation of literary works to film raises a complex series of theoretical and practical questions which have long been discussed. These, however, may become more complex should the distance between the book and the film be even wider, as when there occurs a transition from colonial to post-colonial times, and when the director chooses a sharp transformation of the plot and outlines of the characters, giving the film a different slant from the one that characterized the novel. This paper discusses the case of Francisco Manso, a well-known Portuguese director and producer, whose work includes the film adaptation of literary texts from Cape Verde, such as O testamento do Senhor Nepumoceno da Silva Araújo (1997), A ilha dos escravos (2008) and Os dois irmãos (2018). I shall focus on the second of these films, arguing that this adaptation is not a mistranslation of O Escravo, a pioneer novel by José Evaristo d'Almeida published in 1856

An ancient Angolan zombie: ‘Juca, a matumbola’, by Ernesto Marecos

This paper examines the narrative poem Juca, a matumbola, published in 1865. The author of the text was Ernesto Marecos (1836-1879), a Portuguese writer of the Romantic period, who lived and worked in Angola at least between 1856 and 1857. The poem deals with the phenomenon of matumbolas, similar to that of zombies, widely diffused in Haitian folklore. The source for Marecos’poem was an account published in 1859 in the Boletim official do Governo Geral da Provincia d’Angola, written by someone who, like him, was an official of the Portuguese colonial government. Besides studying the poem and comparing it with its probable source, I will also refer to other occurrences of the theme in modern Angolan literature. ---Original in English.This paper examines the narrative poem Juca, a matumbola, published in 1865. The first foreign edition of the poems of Agostinho Neto

This article deals with the first edition of Agostinho Neto's poems, published in Milan in 1963 and edited by Joyce Lussu, a translator and, above all, an activist, with extensive political work in the context of anti-fascist and anti-colonialist movements. Among the issues to be analysed here is the title of the volume, the corpus (the edition includes about half of the poems which would be included in the definitive version of Sagrada Esperança, 1974) and - based on a comparison with previous and later editions of some of the compositions - problems of textual and genetic criticism. From the analysis that was carried out, it is possible to conclude that the 1963 edition corresponds to a mature project, since a series of poems are presented already in their definitive version. Marginally, given that this is a subject already developed by Italian scholars, some aspects of the translation are also discussed here, namely the layout of the long verses, some mistakes (due to a wrong grammatical interpretation or a misprint in the Portuguese version) and a few cases of what we might call an interpretive translation
