To elucidate the psychophysiological effect of inhaling essential oils, in this paper, we sought to assess the following 12 essential oils: basil, bergamot, cardamom, cinnamon, juniper, lemon, orange, palmarosa, peppermint, sandalwood, spearmint, and ylang ylang. As these being target odors, we focused on the verbal (semantic) and non-verbal (skin temperature) endpoints of the stimuli. In our experimental design, we managed to assign different behavioral tasks to the participants. The Uchida-Kraepelin test was used as a mental arithmetic task and listening to environmental (natural) sounds as an auditory task. In the verbal study, for an example, we conducted the sensory test twice, once before and once after the task. As a measure of the perceived odor quality in participants after inhalation of a given aroma, we employed a sensory evaluation spectrum. It is a bar graph in which the mean of the difference in score between pre- and post-task inquiry (post minus pre) was plotted against the impression descriptors. Taking into account of the obtained skin temperature changes between pre- and post-task inhalations, the subtle nuances between verbal and non-verbal expressions seen as a function of the two behavioral tasks assigned to the participant suggested that essential oils may have versatile psychophysiological potencies by the nature

Adipose tissue : Critical contributor to the development of prostate cancer

The prostate is surrounded by periprostatic adipose tissue. Although adipose tissue was thought to play limited physiological roles, it has recently been recognized as an active endocrine organ, secreting growth factors and adipokines. Epidemiologically, obesity is associated with prostate cancer progression. A major mechanism to explain the link between obesity and cancer includes the insulin and insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1 axis, sex steroids, and adipokines. When prostate cancer cells invade periprostatic adipose tissue, adipose tissue contributes to create the tumor microenvironment, mainly via adipokine secretion. Furthermore, direct crosstalk between adipocytes and cancer cells can exist. We showed that fatty acid-binding protein 4 (FABP4) released from adipocytes was taken up into prostate cancer cells and may act as a carrier of an energy source for the invasion. Bone is an adipocyte-rich organ and is the common metastatic site of prostate cancer. In the microenvironment of bone metastases, tumor cells, osteoblasts, osteoclasts, adipocytes, and other stromal cells are interacting with one another and organizing a complex system. Thus, growing evidence implicates adipose tissue as a critical contributor to the development of prostate cancer. A deeper understanding of the mechanisms leads to more effective therapeutic strategies for prostate cancer

Bystander CPR means that people who find cardiopulmonary arrest perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the spot. Quick CPR contributes to increase in the rate of returning to the society as well as one-month survival rate and neurological prognosis. We report our experience with two high school students who underwent quick Bystander CPR, avoided sudden death, and returned to the society. [Case 1] Eighteen-year-old man : He collapsed suddenly in his home. Bystander CPR was performed by his family until emergency crews arrived there. Automated external defibrillator (AED) worked twice and his heartbeat started again. In electrocardiogram, coved type ST elevation in lead V1 was observed, and he was diagnosed as Brugada syndrome. We implanted an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator. Since his condition was stable, he was discharged on the 19th day. [Case 2] Seventeen-year-old woman : She collapsed suddenly walking with her family. Her father confirmed that she had no response, and started Bystander CPR. Her father got AED quickly and AED worked once, and she started to breathe again. She was admitted to our hospital for a work-up. Torsades de pointes (TdP) was observed in monitor electrocardiogram, and her QTc time was 513 msec in 12‐lead electrocardiogram. She was diagnosed as congenital long QT syndrome because genetic test showed that she had LQT2. Her QTc time was improved (approximately 350 msec) by medication, and she was discharged on the 25th day. Utstein-style statistics in Japan shows that the rate of returning to the society can be doubled by performing Bystander CPR on patients with cardiopulmonary arrest. However, performing rate of Bystander CPR is less than 50% in Japan. In order to increase survival rate of patients with cardiopulmonary arrest for the future, it is important to inform people about CPR and to promote CPR, and in fact, we have been promoting CPR

Positional cloning of the gene LIMBIN responsible for bovine chondrodysplastic dwarfism

Chondrodysplastic dwarfism in Japanese brown cattle is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by short limbs. Previously, we mapped the locus responsible for the disease on the distal end of bovine chromosome 6. Here, we narrowed the critical region to ≈2 cM by using linkage analysis, constructed a BAC and YAC contig covering this region, and identified a gene, LIMBIN (LBN), that possessed disease-specific mutations in the affected calves. One mutation was a single nucleotide substitution leading to an activation of a cryptic splicing donor site and the other was a one-base deletion resulting in a frameshift mutation. Strong expression of the Lbn gene was observed in limb buds of developing mouse embryos and in proliferating chondrocytes and bone-forming osteoblasts in long bones. These findings indicate that LBN is responsible for bovine chondrodysplastic dwarfism and has a critical role in a skeletal development

Abstract

Background

The ideal medication for acid-related diseases should have a rapid onset of action to promote hemostasis and cause efficient resolution of symptoms. The aim of our study was to comparatively investigate the inhibitory effect on gastric acid secretion of a single oral administration of omeprazole plus mosapride with that of omeprazole alone.

Methods

Ten Helicobacter pylori-negative male subjects participated in this randomized, two-way crossover study. Intragastric pH was monitored continuously for 6 hours after a single oral administration of omeprazole 20 mg or that of omeprazole 20 mg plus mosapride 5 mg (the omeprazole being administered one hour after the mosapride). Each administration was separated by a 7-days washout period.

Results

The average pH during the 6-hour period after administration of omeprazole 20 mg plus mosapride 5 mg was higher than that after administration of omeprazole 20 mg alone (median: 3.22 versus 4.21, respectively; <it>p </it>= 0.0247).

Conclusions

In H. pylori -negative healthy male subjects, an oral dose of omeprazole 20 mg plus mosapride 5 mg increased the intragastric pH more rapidly than omeprazole 20 mg alone.</p

As we train the students majoring in physical therapy, there are various problems like the lack of clinical practice facilities because of the rapid increase of the physical therapy training school and shortage of clinical instructor\u27s experience. To solve the problems written above, we, physical therapy department of Aino University, tried to introduce a new clinical practice system in 2008. On this new clinical practice, we send the university assistants who have a lot of experience in the clinical field of physical therapy to the associated hospital and make them involved in the clinical and educational work. We introduce this new clinical system here and describe about educational effect of this system and clinical training form to be changed
