    We develop discrete-time models for analyzing the long run equilibrium outcomes on invasive species management in two-patch environments with migration. In particular, the focus is upon a situation where removal operations for invasive species are implemented only in one patch (controlled patch). The new features of the model are that (i) asymmetry in density dependent migration is considered, which may originate from impact of harvesting as well as heterogeneous habitat conditions, and (ii) the effect of density-dependent catchability is well-taken to account for the nature that required effort level to remove one individual may rise as the existing population decreases. The model is applied for agricultural damage control in the raccoon problem that has occurred in Hokkaido, Japan. Numerical illustration demonstrates that the long run equilibrium outcomes highly depend on the degree of asymmetry in migration as well as the sensitivity of catchability in response to a change in the population size of invasive species. Furthermore, we characterize the conditions under which the economically optimal effort levels are qualitatively affected by the above two factors and aiming at local extermination of invasive species in controlled patch is justified.catchability, meta-population, local extermination, removal effort, density dependent migration

    Isolation and gene analysis of interferon α-resistant cell clones of the hepatitis C virus subgenome

    AbstractHepatitis C virus (HCV) proteins appear to play an important role in IFN-resistance, but the molecular mechanism remains unclear. To clarify the mechanism in HCV replicon RNA harboring Huh-7 cells (Huh-9-13), we isolated cellular clones with impaired IFNα-sensitivity. Huh-9-13 was cultured for approximately 2 months in the presence of IFNα, and 4 IFNα-resistant cell clones showing significant resistances were obtained. When total RNA from clones was introduced into Huh-7 cells, the transfected cells also exhibited IFNα-resistance. Although no common mutations were present, mutations in NS3 and NS5A regions were accumulated. Transactivation of IFNα and IFNα-stimulated Stat-1 phosphorylation were reduced, and the elimination of HCV replicon RNA from the clones restored the IFNα signaling. These results suggest that the mutations in the HCV replicon RNA, at least in part, cause an inhibition of IFN signaling and are important for acquisition of IFNα resistance in Huh-9-13

    Evolution of the Quasar Luminosity Function Over 3 < z < 5 in the COSMOS Survey Field

    We investigate the high-redshift quasar luminosity function (QLF) down to an apparent magnitude of I(AB) = 25 in the Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS). Careful analysis of the extensive COSMOS photometry and imaging data allows us to identify and remove stellar and low-redshift contaminants, enabling a selection that is nearly complete for type-1 quasars at the redshifts of interest. We find 155 likely quasars at z > 3.1, 39 of which have prior spectroscopic confirmation. We present our sample in detail and use these confirmed and likely quasars to compute the rest-frame UV QLF in the redshift bins 3.1 < z < 3.5 and 3.5 < z < 5. The space density of faint quasars decreases by roughly a factor of four from z \sim 3.2 to z \sim 4, with faint-end slopes of {\beta} \sim -1.7 at both redshifts. The decline in space density of faint optical quasars at z > 3 is similar to what has been found for more luminous optical and X-ray quasars. We compare the rest-frame UV luminosity functions found here with the X-ray luminosity function at z > 3, and find that they evolve similarly between z \sim 3.2 and z \sim 4; however, the different normalizations imply that roughly 75% of X-ray bright active galactic nuclei (AGN) at z \sim 3 - 4 are optically obscured. This fraction is higher than found at lower redshift and may imply that the obscured, type-2 fraction continues to increase with redshift at least to z \sim 4. Finally, the implications of the results derived here for the contribution of quasars to cosmic reionization are discussed.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 17 pages, 14 figure

    Epithelium-poor Odontogenic Fibroma with an Unusual Progress

    Odontogenic fibroma (OF) is a relatively rare benign tumor derived from odontogenic ectodermal mesenchymal tissue. It is divided into central (COF) or peripheral OF (POF) based on the affected area. Regarding its pathological features, OF can also be classified as epithelium-rich (WHO type) or epithelium-poor (simple type), depending on the amount of odontogenic epithelium in the tumor. There is limited information available about the latter type because of its low incidence. We report case of simple type COF apparently like POF. A 52- year-old Japanese male was suffering from tenderness at the right posterior maxilla during occlusion with his removable partial denture. The lesion was diagnosed as a simple type OF arising at the edentulous region around the right molar site of the maxilla. A tumor resection was performed, and there was no evidence of recurrence at his 18-month follow-up examination. In addition, we provide a review of the literature with the most up-to-date information about this lesion so that it can be diagnosed correctly

    Prediction of outcome of patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma using vascular invasion and the strongly positive expression of vascular endothelial growth factors.

    Vascular invasion and lymph node metastasis have been used as histopathological prognosticators of cancers including oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). In addition to metastatic potential via blood vessels, tumor-induced angiogenesis might also be associated with prognosis. However, the efficacy of combined evaluation of vascular invasion and angiogenesis-associated molecules for the prognosis of OSCC remains obscure. This is also the case in lymph node metastasis and lymphovasculogenesis-associated molecules. The aim of this study was to examine factors related to prognosis to improve the accuracy of prognostic prediction of OSCC using vasculogenesis-associated markers. Ninety specimens of patients from 1991 to 2002 with previously untreated OSCC, who underwent either biopsy or surgery, were histopathologically and immunohistochemically analyzed using antibodies for vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-A, VEGF-C, cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 and Midkine. The ninety cases were composed of 72 well-differentiated, 12 moderately differentiated and 6 poorly differentiated OSCC. Efficient models of prognostic prediction were evaluated by extensive statistical analyses. The presence of vascular invasion or lymph node metastasis was confirmed to be significantly associated with poor prognosis in the univariate analysis. Multivariate logic regression analysis suggested that patients with the strongly positive expression of either VEGF-A or VEGF-C had a significant association with poor prognosis even in patients without vascular invasion and in early-stage patients. Neither COX-2 nor Midkine contributed to predict the prognosis of the patients. The strongly positive expression of VEGF-A or VEGF-C was suggested to reinforce the histopathological diagnosis of vascular invasion and improve the accuracy and efficacy of prognostic prediction of OSCC
