Trajectories of Innovation in the Health Care Sector: The Case of Belgian Nursing Homes
Nursing homes are a fast-growing sector facing huge and sometimes barely reconcilable challenges that are at the heart of the provision of services. Nursing homes are constantly seeking compromise solutions and are thereby forced to innovate in numerous fields. Under the light of the French Convention Theory, this research investigates the dynamics of innovation through three in-depth qualitative case studies: nonprofit, for-profit and state owned nursing homes. The findings suggest that innovations, considered as compromise devices, are framed by the legal status of the nursing homes in which they ground their justifications. It also shows the influence exerted by external and internal actors on innovation trajectories
Stimulating Theory Creation through Isolation, Confrontation and Integration: The Case of French Convention Theory.
Geographically- or otherwise-isolated scholarly communities can benefit from closure that allows them to nurture and exploit their existing theories. Confrontations are necessary among theories representing different scholarly communities, however, for consistent creation of new theories. We use French Convention Theory as an example theory that, developed in relative isolation, can productively confront both economics-based and behaviorally-based North American organization theories and thereby create new theory. We discuss the benefits and implications of such theory confrontations
