Earthworm Day

Using live animals in the elementary science classroom fosters enthusiasm and encourages curiosity. The earthworms discussed in this article, commonly called night crawlers, are easy to find in Iowa in moist garden soil or around lawns. Earthworms are often used as fishing bait and, because of this, are readily available at reasonable prices from commercial bait dealers or backyard entrepreneurs. Besides their availability and low cost, earthworms are relatively hardy and easily handled by elementary students. For these reasons, and because of the very important role earthworms play in the environment, they were selected to be the focus of the academic activities for one day in first and second grade classrooms. These activities have been used successfully for the past four years

The Embryonic Teacher: A Beginning Science Teacher in a Self-Paced Classroom

Most beginning science teachers enter schools in the fall with fervor and dedication. Those entering a self-paced classroom typically will find it to be a center of bustling activity with students working on a number of diverse activities. The first year of science teaching is a time of confrontation, of shock, and of conflict. The beginning science teacher must act. Out of this need to act comes a great amount of activity, some effective and some ineffective. The beginning science teacher in a self-paced classroom encounters problems because he is a first year science teacher and because there are problems that are peculiar to the self-paced classroom. With little experience in self-paced instruction, the beginning science teacher finds that the first year of teaching is a time for developing an individual teaching method appropriate to the self-paced nature of his classroom

High-resolution Near-Infrared Images and Models of the Circumstellar Disk in HH 30

We present Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Near-Infrared Camera and Multi-object Spectrometer (NICMOS) observations of the reflection nebulosity associated with the T Tauri star HH 30. The images show the scattered light pattern characteristic of a highly inclined, optically thick disk with a prominent dustlane whose width decreases with increasing wavelength. The reflected nebulosity exhibits a lateral asymmetry in the upper lobe on the opposite side to that reported in previously published Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) images. The radiation transfer model which most closely reproduces the data has a flared accretion disk with dust grains larger than standard interstellar medium grains by a factor of approximately 2.1. A single hotspot on the stellar surface provides the necessary asymmetry to fit the images and is consistent with previous modeling of the light curve and images. Photometric analysis results in an estimated extinction of Av>~80; however, since the photometry measures only scattered light rather than direct stellar flux, this a lower limit. The radiative transfer models require an extinction of Av = 7,900.Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap.
