    Acousto-optic effect compensation for optical determination of the normal velocity distribution associated with acoustic transducer radiation

The definitive version was published in Journal of the Acoustical Society of America 138 (2015): 1627, doi:10.1121/1.4929372.The acousto-optic effect, in which an acoustic wave causes variations in the optical index of refraction, imposes a fundamental limitation on the determination of the normal velocity, or normal displacement, distribution on the surface of an acoustic transducer or optically reflecting pellicle by a scanning heterodyne, or homodyne, laser interferometer. A general method of compensation is developed for a pulsed harmonic pressure field, transmitted by an acoustic transducer, in which the laser beam can transit the transducer nearfield. By representing the pressure field by the Rayleigh integral, the basic equation for the unknown normal velocity on the surface of the transducer or pellicle is transformed into a Fredholm equation of the second kind. A numerical solution is immediate when the scanned points on the surface correspond to those of the surface area discretization. Compensation is also made for oblique angles of incidence by the scanning laser beam. The present compensation method neglects edge waves, or those due to boundary diffraction, as well as effects due to baffles, if present. By allowing measurement in the nearfield of the radiating transducer, the method can enable quantification of edge-wave and baffle effects on transducer radiation.     Exploiting symmetries in SDP-relaxations for polynomial optimization

    In this paper we study various approaches for exploiting symmetries in polynomial optimization problems within the framework of semi definite programming relaxations. Our special focus is on constrained problems especially when the symmetric group is acting on the variables. In particular, we investigate the concept of block decomposition within the framework of constrained polynomial optimization problems, show how the degree principle for the symmetric group can be computationally exploited and also propose some methods to efficiently compute in the geometric quotient.Comment: (v3) Minor revision.     Metabolic Profiling of Heathland Plants in the Diet of Sheep

    Little is known about how plant biochemistry influences the grazing behaviour of animals grazing heterogeneous vegetation communities. Furthermore, most biochemical profiles of grassland species are restricted to major nutritional characteristics. Recent developments in analytical techniques have made possible the detailed analysis of minor components, which can potentially affect animal feeding preferences, performance and health. Gas chromatography/time of flight mass spectroscopy (GC/TOF-MS) coupled with automated library annotation is ideally suited to the acquisition of detailed metabolite profiles of plant extracts (Wagner et al., 2003) and can be applied to other matrices such as blood and faeces. In this study GC/TOF-MS was used to identify metabolites within heathland plants, and to investigate which of these metabolites were present and absent within plasma and faeces from sheep consuming mixtures of these plants

    Word Sense Disambiguation for Exploiting Hierarchical Thesauri in Text Classification

    The introduction of hierarchical thesauri (HT) that contain significant semantic information, has led researchers to investigate their potential for improving performance of the text classification task, extending the traditional “bag of words” representation, incorporating syntactic and semantic relationships among words. In this paper we address this problem by proposing a Word Sense Disambiguation (WSD) approach based on the intuition that word proximity in the document implies proximity also in the HT graph. We argue that the high precision exhibited by our WSD algorithm in various humanly-disambiguated benchmark datasets, is appropriate for the classification task. Moreover, we define a semantic kernel, based on the general concept of GVSM kernels, that captures the semantic relations contained in the hierarchical thesaurus. Finally, we conduct experiments using various corpora achieving a systematic improvement in classification accuracy using the SVM algorithm, especially when the training set is small

    A multiple-moment approach to the dielectric function of a dense non-ideal plasma is treated beyond RPA including collisions in Born approximation. The results are compared with the perturbation expansion of the Kubo formula. Sum rules as well as Ward identities are considered.     Generation of ultra-short light pulses by a rapidly ionizing thin foil

    A thin and dense plasma layer is created when a sufficiently strong laser pulse impinges on a solid target. The nonlinearity introduced by the time-dependent electron density leads to the generation of harmonics. The pulse duration of the harmonic radiation is related to the risetime of the electron density and thus can be affected by the shape of the incident pulse and its peak field strength. Results are presented from numerical particle-in-cell-simulations of an intense laser pulse interacting with a thin foil target. An analytical model which shows how the harmonics are created is introduced. The proposed scheme might be a promising way towards the generation of attosecond pulses.     Modelling the spatial distribution of DEM Error

    Assessment of a DEM’s quality is usually undertaken by deriving a measure of DEM accuracy – how close the DEM’s elevation values are to the true elevation. Measures such as Root Mean Squared Error and standard deviation of the error are frequently used. These measures summarise elevation errors in a DEM as a single value. A more detailed description of DEM accuracy would allow better understanding of DEM quality and the consequent uncertainty associated with using DEMs in analytical applications. The research presented addresses the limitations of using a single root mean squared error (RMSE) value to represent the uncertainty associated with a DEM by developing a new technique for creating a spatially distributed model of DEM quality – an accuracy surface. The technique is based on the hypothesis that the distribution and scale of elevation error within a DEM are at least partly related to morphometric characteristics of the terrain. The technique involves generating a set of terrain parameters to characterise terrain morphometry and developing regression models to define the relationship between DEM error and morphometric character. The regression models form the basis for creating standard deviation surfaces to represent DEM accuracy. The hypothesis is shown to be true and reliable accuracy surfaces are successfully created. These accuracy surfaces provide more detailed information about DEM accuracy than a single global estimate of RMSE
