Electrophoretic Properties of Highly Charged Colloids: A Hybrid MD/LB Simulation Study
Using computer simulations, the electrophoretic motion of a positively
charged colloid (macroion) in an electrolyte solution is studied in the
framework of the primitive model. Hydrodynamic interactions are fully taken
into account by applying a hybrid simulation scheme, where the charged ions
(i.e. macroion and electrolyte), propagated via molecular dynamics (MD), are
coupled to a Lattice Boltzmann (LB) fluid. In a recent experiment it was shown
that, for multivalent salt ions, the mobility initially increases with
charge density , reaches a maximum and then decreases with further
increase of . The aim of the present work is to elucidate the behaviour
of at high values of . Even for the case of monovalent microions,
we find a decrease of with . A dynamic Stern layer is defined
that includes all the counterions that move with the macroion while subject to
an external electrical field. The number of counterions in the Stern layer,
, is a crucial parameter for the behavior of at high values of
. In this case, the mobility depends primarily on the ratio
(with the valency of the macroion). The previous contention that
the increase in the distortion of the electric double layer (EDL) with
increasing leads to the lowering of does not hold for high
. In fact, we show that the deformation of the EDL decreases with
increase of . The role of hydrodynamic interactions is inferred from
direct comparisons to Langevin simulations where the coupling to the LB fluid
is switched off. Moreover, systems with divalent counterions are considered. In
this case, at high values of the phenomenon of charge inversion is

Global Nonradial Instabilities of Dynamically Collapsing Gas Spheres
Self-similar solutions provide good descriptions for the gravitational
collapse of spherical clouds or stars when the gas obeys a polytropic equation
of state, (with ). We study the behaviors of
nonradial perturbations in the similarity solutions of Larson, Penston and
Yahil, which describe the evolution of the collapsing cloud prior to core
formation. Our global stability analysis reveals the existence of unstable
bar-modes () when . In particular, for the collapse of
isothermal spheres, which applies to the early stages of star formation, the
density perturbation relative to the background, , increases as ,
where denotes the epoch of core formation, and is the cloud
central density. Thus, the isothermal cloud tends to evolve into an ellipsoidal
shape (prolate bar or oblate disk, depending on initial conditions) as the
collapse proceeds. In the context of Type II supernovae, core collapse is
described by the equation of state, and our analysis
indicates that there is no growing mode (with density perturbation) in the
collapsing core before the proto-neutron star forms, although nonradial
perturbations can grow during the subsequent accretion of the outer core and
envelope onto the neutron star. We also carry out a global stability analysis
for the self-similar expansion-wave solution found by Shu, which describes the
post-collapse accretion (``inside-out'' collapse) of isothermal gas onto a
protostar. We show that this solution is unstable to perturbations of all

From high-mass starless cores to high-mass protostellar objects
Aims: Our aim is to understand the evolutionary sequence of high-mass star
formation from the earliest evolutionary stage of high-mass starless cores, via
high-mass cores with embedded low- to intermediate-mass objects, to finally
high-mass protostellar objects. Methods: Herschel far-infrared PACS and SPIRE
observations are combined with existing data at longer and shorter wavelengths
to characterize the spectral and physical evolution of massive star-forming
regions. Results: The new Herschel images spectacularly show the evolution of
the youngest and cold high-mass star-forming regions from mid-infrared shadows
on the Wien-side of the spectral energy distribution (SED), via structures
almost lost in the background emission around 100mum, to strong emission
sources at the Rayleigh-Jeans tail. Fits of the SEDs for four exemplary regions
covering evolutionary stages from high-mass starless cores to high-mass
protostellar objects reveal that the youngest regions can be fitted by
single-component black-bodies with temperatures on the order of 17K. More
evolved regions show mid-infrared excess emission from an additional warmer
component, which however barely contributes to the total luminosities for the
youngest regions. Exceptionally low values of the ratio between bolometric and
submm luminosity additionally support the youth of the infrared-dark sources.
Conclusions: The Herschel observations reveal the spectral and physical
properties of young high-mass star-forming regions in detail. The data clearly
outline the evolutionary sequence in the images and SEDs. Future work on larger
samples as well as incorporating full radiative transfer calculations will
characterize the physical nature at the onset of massive star formation in even

The Initial Mass Function toward the low-mass end in the Large Magellanic Cloud with HST/WFPC2 Observations
We present V and I equivalent HST/WFPC2 photometry of two areas in the Large
Magellanic Cloud: The southern part of the stellar association LH 52, located
on the western edge of the super-shell LMC 4, and a field between two
associations, which is located on the southwestern edge of the shell, and which
accounts for the general background field of the galaxy. The HST/WFPC2
observations reach magnitudes as faint as V=25 mag, much deeper than have been
observed earlier in stellar associations in the LMC. We determine the MF for
main-sequence stars in the areas. Its slope (Gamma) in both areas is steeper
for stars with masses M < 2 M_solar (-4 < Gamma < -6), compared with stars of M
> 2 M_solar (-1 < Gamma < -2). Thus, as far as the field of the LMC concerns
the MF does not have a uniform slope throughout its observed mass range. The MF
of the general field of the LMC was found previously to be steeper than the MF
of a stellar association for massive stars with M > 5 M_solar. We conclude that
this seems to be also the case toward lower masses down to M ~ 1 M_solar. Our
data allow to construct the field-subtracted, incompleteness-corrected,
main-sequence MF of the southwestern part of the young stellar association LH
52, which accounts for the Initial Mass Function (IMF) of the system. Its mean
slope is found to be comparable, but still more shallow than a typical Salpeter
IMF (Gamma = -1.12 +/- 0.24) for masses down to ~ 1 M_solar. We found
indications that the IMF of the association probably is ``top-heavy'', due to
the large number of intermediate-mass stars in the field of the system, while
the general LMC field is found to be responsible for the low-mass population,

Eclipsing binary stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud : results from the EROS-2, OGLE and VMC surveys
We present a catalogue of 1768 eclipsing binary stars (EBs) detected in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) by the second generation of the EROS survey (hereinafter EROS-2); 493 of them are new discoveries located in outer regions (out of the central bar) of the LMC. These sources were originally included in a list of candidate classical Cepheids (CCs) extracted from the EROS-2 catalogue on the basis of the period (0.89 < 17.82 mag] diagram. After visual inspection of the light curves we reclassified them as eclipsing binaries. They have blue colours (B_EROS - R_EROS < 0.2 mag) hence we classed them as hot eclipsing binaries (HEBs) containing hot massive components: main sequence (MS) stars or blue giants. We present Ks-band light curves for 999 binaries from our sample that have a counterpart in the VISTA near-infrared ESO public survey of the Magellanic Clouds system (VMC). We provide spectral classifications of 13 HEBs with existing spectroscopy. We divided our sample into contact-like binaries and detached/semi-detached systems based on both visual inspection and the parameters of the Fourier decomposition of the light curves and analysed the period-luminosity (PL) relations of the contact-like systems using the R_EROS and Ks magnitudes at maximum light. The contact-like binaries in our sample do not follow PL relations. We analysed the sample of contact binaries from the OGLE III catalogue and confirmed that PL_I and PL_Ks sequences are defined only by eclipsing binaries containing a red giant component.Peer reviewe
Self-similar shear-thickening behavior in CTAB/NaSal surfactant solutions
The effect of salt concentration Cs on the critical shear rate required for
the onset of shear thickening and apparent relaxation time of the
shear-thickened phase, has been investigated systematically for dilute
CTAB/NaSal solutions. Experimental data suggest a self-similar behavior of the
critical shear rate and relaxation time as functions of Cs. Specifically, the
former ~ Cs^(-6) whereas the latter ~ Cs^(6) such that an effective Weissenberg
number for the onset of the shear thickened phase is only weakly dependent on
Cs. A procedure has been developed to collapse the apparent shear viscosity
versus shear rate data obtained for various values of Cs into a single master
curve. The effect of Cs on the elastic modulus and mesh size of the
shear-induced gel phase for different surfactant concentrations is discussed.
Experiments performed using different flow cells (Couette and cone-and-plate)
show that the critical shear rate, relaxation time and the maximum viscosity
attained are geometry-independent. The elastic modulus of the gel phase
inferred indirectly by employing simplified hydrodynamic instability analysis
of a sheared gel-fluid interface is in qualitative agreement with that
predicted for an entangled phase of living polymers. A qualitative mechanism
that combines the effect of Cs on average micelle length and Debye parameter
with shear-induced configurational changes of rod-like micelles is proposed to
rationalize the self-similarity of SIS formation.Comment: 27 pages, 17 figure
Small bowel obstruction complicating colonoscopy: a case report
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>This report describes a rare complication of colonoscopy and reviews the literature with regard to other rare causes of acute abdominal presentations following colonoscopy.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>After a therapeutic colonoscopy a 60-year-old woman developed an acute abdomen. At laparotomy she was discovered to have small bowel obstruction secondary to incarceration through a congenital band adhesion.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Although there is no practical way in which such rare complications can be predicted, this case report emphasises the wide array of pathologies that can result in acute abdominal symptoms following colonoscopy.</p
Animistic pragmatism and native ways of knowing: adaptive strategies for overcoming the struggle for food in the sub-Arctic
Background. Subsistence norms are part of the “ecosophy” or ecological philosophy of Alaska Native Peoples in the sub-Arctic, such as the Inupiat of Seward Peninsula. This kind of animistic pragmatism is a special source of practical wisdom that spans over thousands of years and which has been instrumental in the Iñupiat’s struggle to survive and thrive in harsh and evolving environments. Objective. I hope to show how narrative in relationship to the “ecosophy” of Alaska Native peoples can help to promote a more ecological orientation to address food insecurity in rural communities in Alaska. Alaska Native ecosophy recommends central values and virtues necessary to help address concerns in Alaska’s rural communities. Design. Here, I will tease out the nature of this “ecosophy” in terms of animistic pragmatism and then show why this form of pragmatism can be instrumental for problematizing multi-scalar, intergenerational, uncertain and complex environmental challenges like food security. Results. Native elders have been the embodiment of trans-generational distributed cognition,1 for example, collective memory, norms, information, knowledge, technical skills and experimental adaptive strategies. They are human “supercomputers,” historical epistemologists and moral philosophers of a sort who use narrative, a form of moral testimony, to help their communities face challenges and seize opportunities in the wake of an ever-changing landscape. Conclusions. The “ecosophy” of the Iñupiat of Seward Peninsula offers examples of “focal practices”, which are essential for environmental education. These focal practices instil key virtues, namely humility, gratitude, self-reliance, attentiveness, responsibility and responsiveness, that are necessary for subsistence living
Supersonic water masers in 30 Doradus
We report on extremely high velocity molecular gas, up to -80 km/s relative
to the ambient medium, in the giant star-formation complex 30 Doradus in the
Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), as observed in new 22 GHz H2O maser emission
spectra obtained with the Mopra radio telescope. The masers may trace the
velocities of protostars, and the observed morphology and kinematics indicate
that current star formation occurs near the interfaces of colliding
stellar-wind blown bubbles. The large space velocities of the protostars and
associated gas could result in efficient mixing of the LMC. A similar mechanism
in the Milky Way could seed the galactic halo with relatively young stars and

Psychophysiological effects of massage-myofascial release after exercise: a randomized sham-control study

state, and mechanical nociceptive threshold (MNT) after high-intensity exercise.
Design: This was a prospective randomized clinical trial using between-groups design.
Setting: The study was conducted at a university-based sports medicine clinic.
Participants: Sixty-two (62) healthy active students age 18–26 participated.
Interventions: Participants, randomized into two groups, performed three 30-second Wingate tests and immediately received whole-body massage-myofascial induction or placebo (sham ultrasound/magnetotherapy)
treatment. The duration (40 minutes), position, and therapist were the same for both treatments.
Main outcome measures: Dependent variables were surface electromyography (sEMG) of quadriceps, profile
of mood states (POMS) and mechanical nociceptive threshold (MNT) of trapezius and masseter muscles. These
data were assessed at baseline and after exercise and recovery periods.
Results: Generalized estimating equations models were performed on dependent variables to assess differences
between groups. Significant differences were found in effects of treatment on sEMG of Vastus Medialis (VM)
(p 0.02) and vigor subscale (p 0.04). After the recovery period, there was a significant decrease in electromyographic (EMG) activity of VM (p 0.02) in the myofascial-release group versus a nonsignificant increase
in the placebo group (p 0.32), and a decrease in vigor (p 0.01) in the massage group versus no change in
the placebo group (p 0.86).
Conclusions: Massage reduces EMG amplitude and vigor when applied as a passive recovery technique after
a high-intensity exercise protocol. Massage may induce a transient loss of muscle strength or a change in the
muscle fiber tension–length relationship, influenced by alterations of muscle function and a psychological state
