Remedial Education Programs and Student Success: Perceptions of Faculty and Administrators at HBCUs

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to examine factors that contributed to student success in remedial education as perceived by faculty members and administrators at one public HBCU in the University System of Georgia. The five specific areas that contributed to student success and were identified for review were administrative factors, curricula and instructional models, academic support services, importance of placement tests, and the impact of financial issues. Each of these areas was represented in literature regarding the histories of remedial education programs and HBCUs, recent federal and state admissions and fiscal changes, and instructional best practices of remedial education programs. Literature from these areas and interviews were conducted to examine the impressions of faculty members and program administrators who worked to teach, lead, advise, and test remedial education students at one public HBCU in Georgia. Using a case study approach the researcher interviewed four faculty members and three program administrators who worked to teach, lead, advise, and test remedial education students at one-public HBCU in Georgia. The researcher believed that it was imperative that the voices and lived experiences of the faculty members and program administrators who worked closely within this program be examined. After interviewing faculty members and program administrators connected with the remedial education program at the designated institution, it helped the researcher link responses and commentary to better understand the problems that faculty members and program administrators who remediate students at HBCUs face. During this process, the researcher engaged the participants in conversations about their lived experiences; thereby obtaining the impressions of the participants and answering the research questions in this study. The results indicated that the faculty members and program administrators who worked to teach, lead, advise, and test students at one-public HBCU in Georgia had positive feelings regarding the program, students, and everyone who worked to teach, lead, advise, or test remedial education students; however, the overall impressions were negative in nature regarding the impressions of senior or top-level administrators and faculty members campus wide. The participants’ campus wide impressions did not positively contribute to the successes of remedial education students

Solar Gains in Buildings

Diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou solárních zisků v budovách. Práce uvádí přehled teoretických poznatků k řešení solárních zisků. V experimentální části se práce zbývá možnostmi měření intenzity sluneční radiace a vyhodnocením dat z meteorologické stanice. Aplikace tématu je poté využita na polyfunkční budově. Tato část má za cíl ukázat možnosti návrhu vzduchotechnických a klimatizačních systémů za účelem tvorby vnitřního mikroklimatu a jejich následné hodnocení.Master’s thesis deals with solar gains in buildings. The thesis presents an overview of the theoretical knowledge to solve solar gain. The thesis deals possibilities of measuring the intensity of solar radiation and evaluation of data from the meteorological station in the experimental part. Application of topic is then used for polyfunctional building. This part aims to show possibilities of design of air conditioning systems for the purpose of making indoor microclimate and their subsequent evaluation.

On the production of a shaft for agricultural machinery drive

Předmětem zadané bakalářské práce je analýza technologie výroby hřídele pro pohon zemědělského stroje. Po rozboru technické dokumentace práce obsahuje analýzu stávající výroby v podmínkách firmy. Vlastním cílem bakalářské práce je navržení technologie zadané součástky z hlediska efektivnější výroby, která obsahuje celkem šest alternativních technologií. Dílčí varianty jsou propočteny a graficky znázorněny. Pro inovaci výroby jsou doporučeny varianty využití vícestrojové obsluhy, změny obráběcích nástrojů a změna technologického postupu, při kterých se dosahují významné úspory výrobních nákladů.The subject of the assigned bachelor’s thesis is to analyse the production technology for shaft agricultural machinery drive. After analysing the technical documentation, the thesis includes the analysis of current production conditions in the company. The main goal of the thesis is to design a technology of components, specified in terms of more efficient production, which includes six alternative technologies in total. Sub-variants are calculated and graphically displayed. To innovate the production process there are recommended variants of usage of multi-machine operator, change of machine tools and change of technological processes. Thanks to it the significant cost savings are achieved.

On the production of an agricultural machinery part and its optimization

Diplomová práce se zabývá procesem obrábění výkovku ojnice, a to ve spolupráci se společností Zetor Tractors a.s. První kapitola práce je zaměřena na bližší představení společnosti. Druhá kapitola obsahuje podrobnější rozbor technické dokumentace a požadavků na výrobu předmětu studie, tedy sestavy ojnice. Ve třetí kapitole je detailně rozebrána a popsána stávající technologie výroby. Čtvrtá kapitola si klade za cíl návrh nové technologie použitelné pro výrobu ojnice v požadované jakosti. Pátá kapitola je zacílena na samotné testování nově navržené technologie. V poslední, tedy šesté kapitole je provedeno technicko-ekonomické zhodnocení navrženého postupu.This master's thesis deals with the process of machining a forged connecting rod in cooperation with the company Zetor Tractors a.s. The first chapter of the thesis is focused on a detailed introduction of the company. The second chapter includes an elaborate analysis of the technical documentation and requirements concerning the making process of the subject of study, specifically the construction of the connecting rod. In the third chapter, the current production technology is discussed and described in detail. The aim of the fourth chapter is to propose an innovative technology which can be used for the production of connecting rods in the required quality. The fifth chapter is aimed at testing the newly designed technology. In the final, sixth, chapter, a technical and economical evaluation of the proposed procedure is performed.

Cryptographic modules for network protection

Práce se zabývá problematikou virtuálních privátních sítí (VPN) a autentizace. V první části jsou vysvětleny moderní kryptografické metody, problematika autentizace, autentizační předměty a také problematice VPN. V druhé části práce je popsán návrh a realizace vlastní bezpečné sítě založené na technologiích firmy SafeNet.This work deals with virtual private network (VPN) and authentication. The first section gives the modern cryptographic methods, the work of dealing with problems of authentication and authentication of objects and the issue of VPN. The second part describes the implementation of its own secure network-based technology company SafeNet.

Design of a pressure monitor for biomedical applications

Cílem této bakalářské práce bylo nejprve shromáždit požadavky na provedení a funkční vlastnosti navrhovaného monitoru tlaků. Na základě shromážděných požadavků bylo navrženo blokové a následně i obvodové schéma zapojení celého zařízení. Dále byla navržena, zhotovena a osazena deska plošných spojů, která byla následně i s ostatními komponenty umístěna do připravené konstrukční krabičky. Zhotovené zařízení bylo otestováno, nastaveno a jeho proměřením byla ověřena jeho přesnost. Nakonec byl sepsán uživatelský a servisní manuál.The goal of this bachelor’s thesis was to gather requirements for the realization and functional features of the proposed pressure monitor. Based on the collected requirements, the block diagram and also the complete schematic were proposed. Then the printed circuit board was designed, made and fitted. This board was placed into prepared box together with other components. Finished equipment was tested, set and also precision was checked by its measurement. Finally, user guide and also service manual were written.

EMC antenna

Cílem této diplomové práce bylo navrhnout anténu pracující ve frekvenčním pásmu 30 MHz až 1 GHz. Navržená bikónická anténa vyžaduje ke správné funkci symetrické napájení, proto bylo dále nutné navrhnout vhodný symetrizační člen sestavený z diskrétních součástek. Navržená anténa byla také zkonstruována a měřením byl ověřen její činitel odrazu na vstupu, zisk a směrové charakteristiky. Tato diplomová práce dále obsahuje seznámení čtenáře s principy měření úrovně rušivých signálů v oblasti EMC pomocí antén a také porovnání typů antén pro pásma metrových a decimetrových vln.The goal of this master’s thesis was to design antenna working in frequency range from 30 MHz to 1 GHz. Designed biconical antenna requires balanced feed to work properly, therefore designing the balancing unit based on discrete components was necessary. Designed antenna was also constructed and its return loss, gain and radiation patterns were verified by measurement. This master’s thesis also introduces readers into principles of antenna measurements of disturbing signals in the area of EMC and compares different types of antennas for bands of meter and decimeter waves.

Mobile belt conveyor

Cílem této bakalářské práce je návrh pojízdného pásového dopravníku na hnědé a černé uhlí. Práce obsahuje teoretickou část, kde jsou popsány všechny komponenty pásového dopravníku, dále funkční výpočty dle normy ČSN ISO 5048, výpočet výkonu dopravníku, celkové rozměry dopravníku, návrh pohonu, napínací zařízení, pevnostní kontrolu vybrané části a pojízdnou část.The aim of this work is to design a mobile conveyor belt to brown and black coal. The thesis contains a theoretical part, which describes all the components of the conveyor belt further functional calculations according to ISO 5048, the calculation of the performance conveyor, conveyor overall dimensions, the design of the drive, the tensioning device, strength calculation of selected parts and undercarriage.
