    Habitat Preferences of Butterflies in the Bumbuna Forest, Northern Sierra Leone

    The habitat preferences of the butterfly fauna were studied in the Bumbuna Forest Reserve in northern Sierra Leone. The intact forest reserve and a secondary forest regrowth, disturbed as a result of slash-and-burn agriculture, were compared to savanna habitats. Of the 290 specimens collected, 195 butterfly species were included, of which significant proportion were Nymphalidae. Of the 147 forest species, 111 (75.5%) showed preferences for the forest habitats, while 70 (47.6%) and 34 (23.1%) preferred disturbed and savannah habitats, respectively. Numerically, a comparable proportion of savannah species were recorded in the 18 disturbed (73.9%) and 16 savannah habitats (63.2%). Accumulated species richness and diversity indices were lower in the disturbed habitats compared to the forest reserve, but lowest in the savanna habitats. However, a large proportion of forest species, especially those with either a more restricted geographic range or species for which no information on geographic distribution was available, were exclusively captured in the forest patches. The survey indicated the presence of a rich butterfly fauna, which should be systematically collected for further research and study in order to build a good taxonomic database for Sierra Leone

    Phylogeny and Historical Biogeography of Asian Pterourus Butterflies (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae): A Case of Intercontinental Dispersal from North America to East Asia

    The phylogenetic status of the well-known Asian butterflies often known as Agehana (a species group, often treated as a genus or a subgenus, within Papilio sensu lato) has long remained unresolved. Only two species are included, and one of them especially, Papilio maraho, is not only rare but near-threatened, being monophagous on its vulnerable hostplant, Sassafras randaiense (Lauraceae). Although the natural history and population conservation of “Agehana” has received much attention, the biogeographic origin of this group still remains enigmatic. To clarify these two questions, a total of 86 species representatives within Papilionidae were sampled, and four genes (concatenated length 3842 bp) were used to reconstruct their phylogenetic relationships and historical scenarios. Surprisingly, “Agehana” fell within the American Papilio subgenus Pterourus and not as previously suggested, phylogenetically close to the Asian Papilio subgenus Chilasa. We therefore formally synonymize Agehana with Pterourus. Dating and biogeographic analysis allow us to infer an intercontinental dispersal of an American ancestor of Asian Pterourus in the early Miocene, which was coincident with historical paleo-land bridge connections, resulting in the present “East Asia-America” disjunction distribution. We emphasize that species exchange between East Asia and America seems to be a quite frequent occurrence in butterflies during the Oligocene to Miocene climatic optima.© 2015 Wu et al.     Chromosome counts in meiotic metaphase plates in the gonads of 67 of the probable 68 species of mimetic neotropical heliconian butterflies (Nymphalidae), representing 1524 individuals in 617 subspecies and geographically separate populations from southern Texas to northern Argentina, revealed a consistent haploid number of n = 21 in the genus Heliconius (except for the most advanced species with n = 33, 37, 56, and 60) and n = 31 in the more primitive genera (Eueides, Dryas, Dryadula, Agraulis, and Dione), with a transitional genus (Neruda) showing three species with n = 28-32, 21-22 + 5-10 "microchromosomes", and 20-22 + 1-5 "microchromosomes". The genus Laparus, with a single polymorphic species doris, probably an offshoot of early Heliconius, shows wide karyotypic variation (n = 20-30, 38) sometimes even within a single individual. The two most primitive genera also show much variation: Podotricha has two species with n = 9 and n = 26-29; and Philaethria shows many phenotypically similar species, two with n = 29 and a still uncertain number (at least 3) with n = 88 (most common), 67-72 (most widespread), 62 (very restricted geographically), 52, 21, and 12. Several interspecific hybrids (Heliconius cydno x H. melpomene) showed normal chromosome pairing, while deficient pairing was seen in intersubspecific hybrids in Eueides tales and Heliconius sara. The importance of these results in the evolutionary study of polytypic tropical species is discussed.117210912

    Updip rupture of the 2004 Sumatra earthquake extended by thick indurated sediments

    During subduction, weak, unlithified sediments are scraped off the down-going plate and accumulate near the subduction trench axis. The weak nature of the sediments usually impedes the propagation of fault rupture during an earthquake. However, measurements of slip during the 2004 Sumatra–Andaman Mw 9.2 earthquake show that fault rupture propagatedupdip, extending unusually close to the subduction trench, in the southern part of the rupture area. Here we present seismic reflection images of the southern part of the 2004 Sumatra–Andaman earthquake rupture area. We show that sedimentary strata, greater than 4?km in thickness, form coherent blocks that have been thrust onto the continental margin during subduction. The blocks form a 130-km-wide plateau overlying the seismogenic zone and the plate boundary megathrust lies near to the base of the sediments. The sediments consist of the Nicobar and Bengal Fan turbidites and exhibit strong internal cohesion. We suggest that dewatering and lithification of the sediments during burial made them unusually competent and strong, thus enabling rupture during the 2004 earthquake to propagate beneath the plateau, close to the Sunda Trench. Extending fault rupture so close to the trench, and thus further seaward, may have enhanced the tsunami hazard by displacing a greater thickness of water
