Linking nanoscale mechanical behavior to bulk physical properties and phenomena of energetic materials

The hardness and reduced modulus of aspirin, RDX, HMX, TATB, FOX-7, ADAAF, and TNT/CL-20 were experimentally measured with nanoindentation. These values are reported for the first time using as-received micron sized crystals of energetic materials with no additional mechanical processing. The results for TATB, ADAAF, and TNT/CL-20 are the first of their kind, while comparisons to previous nanoindentation studies on large, carefully grown single crystals of the other energetic materials show that mechanical properties of the larger crystals are comparable to crystals in the condition they are practically used. Measurements on aspirin demonstrate the variation that can occur between nanoindentation indents based on the orientation of a Berkovich tip relative to the surface of the sample. The Hertzian elastic contact model was used to analyze the materials initial yield, or pop-in, behavior. The length, energy, indentation load, and shear stress at initial yielding were used to characterize each material. For the energetic materials the length and energy of the yield excursions were compared to the drop weight sensitivity. This comparison revealed a general trend that more impact sensitive materials have longer, more severe pop-in excursions. Hot spot initiation mechanisms involving crystal defects such as void collapses and dislocation pile-up followed by avalanche are supported by these trends. While this only takes one aspect of impact sensitivity into consideration, if this trend is observed in a larger range of energetics these methods could possibly be used to great advantage in the early stages of new explosives synthesis to obtain an estimation of drop weight sensitivity

Consumption of Functional Food by Cardiovascular Disease and Its Role in Disease Management

    Get PDF
Consumption of functional food by cardiovascular disease patient plays a very important role in their management. Due to the increase globalization and changes in lifestyle, many adult populations are at high risk of hypertension and have contributed to high mortality and morbidity and related CVD risk. The purpose of this study is to assess the nutritional status of CVD patient and their intake of functional food. Many studies regarding functional food have confirmed that nutrition has great impact for prevention of chronic disease as most of them are consumed in daily life. The tool used for this study is questionnaire-based form which is physically ask by visiting the hospital. The expected outcome is we would get to know about if a patient is including any functional food in the diet and also, we would be able to know about the role of its in disease management. From this study, it has been found that many CVD patients are not aware of the importance of functional foods

Motives for millennials' choice on traditional food and their level of consumption: A cross-cultural comparison.

Malaysian cuisine is known for its vibrant and diverse flavours which reflects the multi-ethnic makeup of its population. Hence, it is interesting to investigate how the differences of background and cultures lead to different food consumption and motives for food choices among different ethnic groups. This study aims to investigate the relationship between consumption of traditional food and motives for food choice among millennial in Malaysia with ethnicity as the moderator. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to 922 representative millennial which consisted of Malays (31%), Chinese (35.9%) and Indians (33.1%). The results of this study indicate that health concern, familiarity, mood and ethical concerns significantly influence the millennials’ general attitude towards traditional food consumption. Additionally, PLS-Multi-Group Analysis (MGA) was employed to study the association of food choice motives, general attitude and the level of consumption among the young Malays, Chinese and Indians in Malaysia. The results show that the differences in background and cultures between Malays and Chinese, and Malays and Indians, moderate the effect of mood on the general attitude towards traditional food. While for Chinese and Indians, different background and cultures moderate the influence of convenience on the general attitude towards traditional food

A total of 3,080 pigs (5.5 to 21.8 kg) were utilized to determine the estimated daily water intake of pigs during a 41-d nursery period. The data set included results from 11 experiments with 28 pens (10 pigs per pen). Pigs were weaned between 18-22 d of age and housed in an environmentally controlled nursery. Pigs were blocked by BW and allocated to pens upon arrival. Pens contained one stainless steel feeder and one cup waterer (Suevia model 929 TM). Waterers had a water meter (Assured Automation WM-PD series TM) tracking daily intake and meter values were recorded at a similar time daily in each experiment. Barn temperature at arrival was 31.1 degrees C and decreased 1 degrees C per week. Pigs were fed standard corn-soybean meal diets formulated to meet or exceed swine NRC requirements (2012) for nursery pigs in a 4 or 5- phase feeding program. Data were analyzed using SAS to generate a regression equation and correlation between intake by day using PROC REG/PROC COR. Pen served as experimental unit with day, bodyweight, and feed intake as the dependent variables and intake the independent variable. Pen water intake was corrected to daily water intake/pig by dividing pen water intake by pig days. Average daily water intake during the nursery period was 1.70 +/- 0.30 L/pig and total volume of water consumed during the nursery period was 65.5 +/- 13 L/pig. There was a strong linear increase (P < 0.0001) in water intake as days progressed with a prediction equation: Daily water intake, L/pig = (0.06983*day) + 0.24892 (R2 = 0.73). Water intake and day were highly correlated (r = 0.85; P < 0.0001). There was a strong linear increase in (P<0.0001 and P< 0.0001) in water intake as bodyweight increased. Prediction equations for body weight: Avg. Daily Water Intake (L/pig) = 0.1876 + (0.1148 * BW, kg) for overall bodyweight and: Avg. Daily Water Intake (L/pig) = -0.0224 + (0.1624 * BW, kg) for Avg. weekly body weight. Water intake and bodyweight were highly correlated (R2 =0.632, R2=0.720) and (r=0.80, r=0.85). There was a strong linear increase (P<0.0001 and P<0.0001) for water intake and feed intake as they increased. Prediction equation: Avg. Daily Water Intake (L/pig) = 0.3256 + (2.6857 * ADFI, kg/pig) and: Avg. Daily Feed Intake (kg/pig) = 0.0464 + (0.2785 * ADWI, L/pig). Water intake and feed intake were highly correlated (R2=0.748) and (r=0.87). There was no effect of experiment or pen on prediction of water intake. In conclusion, water intake can be predicted based on day in the nursery, body weight, and average daily feed intake. Feed intake can also be predicted using water intake
