On the control of psychological networks
The combination of network theory and network psychometric methods has opened up a variety of new ways to conceptualize and study psychological disorders. The idea of psychological disorders as dynamic systems has sparked interest in developing interventions based on results of network analytic tools. However, simply estimating a network model is not sufficient for determining which symptoms might be most effective to intervene upon, nor is it sufficient for determining the potential efficacy of any given intervention. In this paper, we attempt to remedy this gap by introducing fundamental concepts of control theory to both psychometricians and applied psychologists. We introduce two controllability statistics to the psychometric literature, average and modal controllability, to facilitate selecting the best set of intervention targets. Following this introduction, we show how intervention scientists can probe the effects of both theoretical and empirical interventions on networks derived from real data and demonstrate how simulations can account for intervention cost and the desire to reduce specific symptoms. Every step is based on rich clinical EMA data from a sample of subjects undergoing treatment for complicated grief, with a focus on the outcome suicidal ideation. Gauge Invariant Summation of All QCD Virtual Gluon Exchanges
The interpretation of virtual gluons as ghosts in the non-linear gluonic
structure of QCD permits the formulation and realization of a manifestly
gauge-invariant and Lorentz covariant theory of interacting quarks/anti-quarks,
for all values of coupling. The simplest example of quark/anti-quark scattering
in a high-energy, quenched, eikonal model at large coupling is shown to be
expressible as a set of finite, local integrals which may be evaluated
numerically; and before evaluation, it is clear that the result will be
dependent only on, and is damped by increasing momentum transfer, while
displaying physically-reasonable color dependence in a manner underlying the
MIT Bag Model and an effective, asymptotic freedom. A similar but more
complicated integral will result from all possible gluonic-radiative
corrections to this simplest eikonal model. Our results are compatible with an

Network analysis of PTSD and depressive symptoms in 158,139 treatment-seeking veterans with PTSD
Background In recent years, a new framework for analyzing and understanding posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was introduced; the network approach. Up until now, network analysis studies of PTSD were largely conducted on small to medium sample sizes (N < 1,000), which might be a possible cause of variability in main findings. Moreover, only a limited number of network studies investigated comorbidity.Methods In this study, we utilized a large sample to conduct a network analysis of 17 symptoms of PTSD (DSM-IV), and compared it to the result of a second network consisting of symptoms of PTSD and depression (based on Patient Health Questionnaire-9 [PHQ-9]). Our sample consisted of 502,036 treatment-seeking veterans, out of which 158,139 had fully completed the assessment of symptoms of PTSD and a subsample of 32,841 with valid PCL and PHQ-9 that was administered within 14 days or less.Results Analyses found that in the PTSD network, the most central symptoms were feeling distant or cut off from others, followed by feeling very upset when reminded of the event, and repeated disturbing memories or thoughts of the event. In the combined network, we found that concentration difficulties and anhedonia are two of the five most central symptoms.Conclusion Our findings replicate the centrality of intrusion symptoms in PTSD symptoms' network. Taking into account the large sample and high stability of the network structure, we believe our study can answer some of the criticism regarding stability of cross-sectional network structures.Stress and Psychopatholog
Instability of a Bose-Einstein Condensate with Attractive Interaction
We study the stability of a Bose-Einstein condensate of harmonically trapped
atoms with negative scattering length, specifically lithium 7. Our method is to
solve the time-dependent nonlinear Schrodinger equation numerically. For an
isolated condensate, with no gain or loss, we find that the system is stable
(apart from quantum tunneling) if the particle number N is less than a critical
number N_c. For N > N_c, the system collapses to high-density clumps in a
region near the center of the trap. The time for the onset of collapse is on
the order of 1 trap period. Within numerical uncertainty, the results are
consistent with the formation of a "black hole" of infinite density
fluctuations, as predicted by Ueda and Huang. We obtain numerically N_c
approximately 1251. We then include gain-loss mechanisms, i.e., the gain of
atoms from a surrounding "thermal cloud", and the loss due to two- and
three-body collisions. The number N now oscillates in a steady state, with a
period of about 145 trap periods. We obtain N_c approximately 1260 as the

The First Magnetic Fields
We review current ideas on the origin of galactic and extragalactic magnetic
fields. We begin by summarizing observations of magnetic fields at cosmological
redshifts and on cosmological scales. These observations translate into
constraints on the strength and scale magnetic fields must have during the
early stages of galaxy formation in order to seed the galactic dynamo. We
examine mechanisms for the generation of magnetic fields that operate prior
during inflation and during subsequent phase transitions such as electroweak
symmetry breaking and the quark-hadron phase transition. The implications of
strong primordial magnetic fields for the reionization epoch as well as the
first generation of stars is discussed in detail. The exotic, early-Universe
mechanisms are contrasted with astrophysical processes that generate fields
after recombination. For example, a Biermann-type battery can operate in a
proto-galaxy during the early stages of structure formation. Moreover, magnetic
fields in either an early generation of stars or active galactic nuclei can be
