Multi-Output Broadacre Agricultural Production: Estimating A Cost Function Using Quasi-Micro Farm Level Data From Australia
Existing econometric models for Australian broadacre agricultural production are few and have become dated. This paper estimates a multi-product restricted cost function using a unique quasi-micro farm level dataset from the Australian Agricultural and Grazing Industries Survey. Both the transcendental logarithmic and normalized quadratic functional forms are employed. Heteroskedasticity caused by the particular nature of the quasi-micro data is also assessed and accommodated. Allen partial elasticities of input substitution and own-and cross-price input demand elasticities are computed. The estimated demands for most production factors are inelastic to prices. Ground-Penetrating Radar Velocity Determination and Precision Estimates Using Common-Mid-Point (CMP) Collection with Hand-Picking, Semblance Analysis, and Cross-Correlation Analysis: a Case Study and Tutorial for Archaeologists
The most crucial parameter to be determined in an archaeological ground-penetrating radar (GPR) survey is the velocity of the subsurface material. Precision velocity estimates comprise the basis for depth estimation, topographic correction and migration, and can therefore be the difference between spurious interpretations and/or efficient GPR-guided excavation with sound archaeological interpretation of the GPR results. Here, we examine the options available for determining the GPR velocity and for assessing the precision of velocity estimates from GPR data, using data collected at a small-scale iron-working site in Rhode Island, United States. In the case study, the initial velocity analysis of common-offset GPR profile data, using the popular method of hyperbola fitting, produced some unexpectedly high subsurface signal velocity estimates, while analysis of common midpoint (CMP) GPR data yielded a more reasonable subsurface signal velocity estimate. Several reflection analysis procedures for CMP data, including hand and automated signal picking using cross-correlation and semblance analysis, are used and discussed here in terms of efficiency of processing and yielded results. The case study demonstrates that CMP data may offer more accurate and precise velocity estimates than hyperbola fitting under certain field conditions, and that semblance analysis, though faster than hand-picking or cross-correlation, offers less precision
Statistical Mechanics of Broadcast Channels Using Low Density Parity Check Codes
We investigate the use of Gallager's low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes in
a broadcast channel, one of the fundamental models in network information
theory. Combining linear codes is a standard technique in practical network
communication schemes and is known to provide better performance than simple
timesharing methods when algebraic codes are used. The statistical physics
based analysis shows that the practical performance of the suggested method,
achieved by employing the belief propagation algorithm, is superior to that of
LDPC based timesharing codes while the best performance, when received
transmissions are optimally decoded, is bounded by the timesharing limit.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure

Anisotropy of the Mobility of Pentacene from Frustration
The bandstructure of pentacene is calculated using first-principles density
functional theory. A large anisotropy of the hole and electron effective masses
within the molecular planes is found. The band dispersion of the HOMO and the
LUMO is analyzed with the help of a tight-binding fit. The anisotropy is shown

A Far-Ultraviolet View of Starburst Galaxies
Recent observational and theoretical results on starburst galaxies related to
the wavelength regime below 1200 A are discussed. The review covers stars,
dust, as well as hot and cold gas. This wavelength region follows trends
similar to those seen at longer wavelengths, with several notable exceptions.
Even the youngest stellar populations show a turn-over in their spectral energy
distributions, and line-blanketing is much more pronounced. Furthermore, the O
VI line allows one to probe gas at higher temperatures than possible with lines
at longer wavelengths. Molecular hydrogen lines (if detected) provide a glimpse
of the cold phase. I cover the crucial wavelength regime below 912 A and the

Background: Obesity is generally believed to be a risk factor for the development of postoperative complications. Although being obese is associated with medical hazards, recent literature shows no convincing data to support this assumption. Moreover a paradox between body mass index and survival is described. This study was designed to determine influence of body mass index on postoperative complications and long-term survival after surgery. The distribution and characterization of HNK-1 antigens in the developing avian heart
The heart originates from splanchnic mesoderm and to a lesser extent from neural crest cells. The HNK-1 monoclonal antibody is a marker for early migrating neural crest cells, but reacts also with structures which are not derived from the neural crest. We investigated whether heart structures are HNK-1 positive before neural crest cells colonize these target tissues. To that end, we determined the HNK-1 antigen expression in the developing avian heart on immunohistochemical sections and on Western blots. The HNK-1 immunoreactivity in the developing chick heart is compared with data from literature cm the localization of neural crest cells in chick/quail chimeras. Structures with neural crest contribution, including parts of the early outflow tract and the related endocardial cushions, the primordia of the semilunar valve leaflets and the aorticopulmonary septum were HNK-1 positive. Furthermore, other structures were HNK-1 positive, such as the atrioventricular cushions, the wall of the sinus venosus at stage HH 15 through 21, parts of the endocardium at E3, parts of the myocardium at E6, and the extracellular matrix in the myocardial base of the semilunar valves at E14. HNK-1 expression was particularly observed in morphologically dynamic regions such as the developing valves, the outflow tract cushion, the developing conduction system and the autonomie nervous system of the heart. We observed that atrioventricular endocardial cushions are HNK-1 positive. We conclude that: a HNK-1 immunoreactivity does not always coincide with the presence of neural crest cells or their derivatives; (2) the outflow tract cushions and atrioventricular endocardial cushions are HNK-1 positive before neural crest cells are expected (stage HH 19) to enter the endocardial cushions of the outflow tract; (3) the observed spatio-temporal HNK-1 patterns observed in the developing heart correspond with various HNK-1 antigens.
