Electromagnetic corrections to p scattering length from pionic hydrogen
We derive a closed, model space independent, expression for the
electromagnetic correction factor to the scattering length
extracted from a hydrogenic atom with an extended charge to order
and in the limit of a short ranged hadronic interaction.Comment: 4 pages; PANIC02, XVIth Conference on Particles and Nuclei, Osaka, to

Quark Condensate in the Deuteron
We study the changes produced by the deuteron on the QCD quark condensate by
means the Feynman-Hellmann theorem and find that the pion mass dependence of
the pion-nucleon coupling could play an important role. We also discuss the
relation between the many body effect of the condensate and the meson exchange
currents, as seen by photons and pions. For pion probes, the many-body term in
the physical amplitude differs significantly from that of soft pions, the one
linked to the condensate. Thus no information about the many-body term of the
condensate can be extracted from the pion-deuteron scattering length. On the
other hand, in the Compton amplitude, the relationship with the condensate is a
more direct one.Comment: to appear in Physics Review C (19 pages, 3 figures
Precise strength of th piNN coupling constant
We report here a preliminary value for the piNN coupling constant deduced
from the GMO sumrule for forward piN scattering. As in our previous
determination from np backward differential scattering cross sections we give a
critical discussion of the analysis with careful attention not only to the
statistical, but also to the systematic uncertainties. Our preliminary
evaluation gives (GMO) = 13.99(24).Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, contribution to INPC/98, to be published in

Angle-dependent normalization of neutron-proton differential cross sections
Systematic errors in the database of differential cross sections below
350 MeV are studied. By applying angle-dependent normalizations with the help
of the energy-dependent Nijmegen partial-wave analysis PWA93 the
-values of some seriously flawed data sets can be reduced significantly
at the expense of a few degrees of freedom. It turns out that in these special
cases the renormalized data sets can be made statistically acceptable such that
they do not have to be discarded any longer in partial-wave analyses of the
two-nucleon scattering data.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figure; expanded versio
Spin-Dependent Macroscopic Forces from New Particle Exchange
Long-range forces between macroscopic objects are mediated by light particles
that interact with the electrons or nucleons, and include spin-dependent static
components as well as spin- and velocity-dependent components. We parametrize
the long-range potential between two fermions assuming rotational invariance,
and find 16 different components. Applying this result to electrically neutral
objects, we show that the macroscopic potential depends on 72 measurable
parameters. We then derive the potential induced by the exchange of a new gauge
boson or spinless particle, and compare the limits set by measurements of
macroscopic forces to the astrophysical limits on the couplings of these
particles.Comment: 37 page
The Two-Nucleon Potential from Chiral Lagrangians
Chiral symmetry is consistently implemented in the two-nucleon problem at
low-energy through the general effective chiral lagrangian. The potential is
obtained up to a certain order in chiral perturbation theory both in momentum
and coordinate space. Results of a fit to scattering phase shifts and bound
state data are presented, where satisfactory agreement is found for laboratory
energies up to about 100 Mev.Comment: Postscript file; figures available by reques
BB Intermeson Potentials in the Quark Model
In this paper we derive quark model results for scattering amplitudes and
equivalent low energy potentials for heavy meson pairs, in which each meson
contains a heavy quark. This "BB" system is an attractive theoretical
laboratory for the study of the nuclear force between color singlets; the
hadronic system is relatively simple, and there are lattice gauge theory (LGT)
results for V_BB(r) which may be compared to phenomenological models. We find
that the quark model potential (after lattice smearing) has qualitative
similarities to the LGT potential in the two B*B* channels in which direct
comparison is possible, although there is evidence of a difference in length
scales. The quark model prediction of equal magnitude but opposite sign for I=0
and I=1 potentials also appears similar to LGT results at intermediate r. There
may however be a discrepancy between the LGT and quark model I=1 BB potentials.
A numerical study of the two-meson Schrodinger equations in the (bqbar)(bqbar)
and (cqbar)(cqbar) sectors with the quark model potentials finds a single
"molecule", in the I=0 BB* sector. Binding in other channels might occur if the
quark model forces are augmented by pion exchange.Comment: 30 pages, 5 figures, revtex and epsfig. Submitted to Phys. Rev.
Sum rule for the backward spin polarizability of the nucleon from a backward dispersion relation
A new sum rule for , the backward spin polarizability of the
nucleon, is derived from a backward-angle dispersion relation. Taking into
account single- and multi-pion photoproduction in the s-channel up to the
energy 1.5 GeV and resonances in the t-channel with mass below 1.5 GeV, it is
found for the proton and neutron that = -39.5 +/- 2.4 and
= 52.5 +/- 2.4, respectively, in units of 10^{-4} fm^4.Comment: 10 pages, 1 figure, revtex. Submitted to Phys. Lett.
g_{\pi \Lambda \Sigma} and g_{K \Sigma \Xi} from QCD sum rules
The coupling constants g_{\pi \Lambda \Sigma} and g_{K \Sigma \Xi} are
calculated in the QCD sum rule approach using the three-point function method
and taking into account the SU(3) symmetry breaking effects. The pattern of
SU(3) breaking appears to be different from that based on SU(3) relations.Comment: revtex, 9 page
CHIRAL BACKGROUND FOR THE TWO PION EXCHANGE NUCLEAR POTENTIAL: A PARAMETRIZED VERSION
We argue that the minimal chiral background for the two-pion exchange
nucleon-nucleon interaction has nowadays a rather firm conceptual basis, which
entitles it to become a standard ingredient of any modern potential. In order
to facilitate applications, we present a parametrized version of a
configuration space potential derived previously. We then use it to assess the
phenomenological contents of some existing NN potentials.Comment: REVTEX style, 16 pages, 5 PostScript figures compressed, tarred and
