    Anisotropic transport in unidirectional lateral superlattice around half-filling of the second Landau level

    We have observed marked transport anisotropy in short period (a=92 nm) unidirectional lateral superlattices around filling factors nu=5/2 and 7/2: magnetoresistance shows a sharp peak for current along the modulation grating while a dip appears for current across the grating. By altering the ratio a/l (with l=sqrt{hbar/eB_perp} the magnetic length) via changing the electron density n_e, it is shown that the nu=5/2 anisotropic features appear in the range 6.6 alt a/l alt 7.2 varying their intensities, becoming most conspicuous at a/l simeq 6.7. The peak/dip broadens with temperature roughly preserving its height/depth up to 250 mK. Tilt experiments reveal that the structures are slightly enhanced by an in-plane magnetic field B_| perpendicular to the grating but are almost completely destroyed by B_| parallel to the grating. The observations suggest the stabilization of a unidirectional charge-density-wave or stripe phase by weak external periodic modulation at the second Landau level.Comment: REVTeX, 5 pages, 3 figures, Some minor revisions, Added notes and reference

    The Interactions of Strength of Governments and Alternative Exchange Rate Regimes in Avoiding Currency Crises

    This paper analyzes the stability of alternative exchange rate regimes in the face of substantial capital mobility. This issue often goes under the label of the unstable middle or the two-corners hypotheses. We argue that both the issues of why the middle is unstable and how far toward the extremes of fixed or flexible exchange rates countries need to go in order to substantially reduce the likelihood of currency crises depends crucially on political economy as well as technical economic considerations. We undertake a large N empirical study that extends the currency crisis literature by using a new classification of exchange rate regimes from the IMF and taking into account the interactive effects between government strength and alternative exchange rate regimes on the probability of currency crises. We find that weak governments increase the likelihood of currency crises under any type of exchange rate regime, and as our theory suggests, this effect is strongest under adjustably pegged exchange regimes

    The Discipline Effects of Fixed Exchange Rates: Constraint versus Incentive Effects and the Distinction between Hard and Soft Pegs

    There has been much interest in whether fixed exchange rates can provide a strong source of discipline over domestic monetary and fiscal policies. We argue that previous studies, however, have not paid sufficient attention to the distinction between constraint and incentive effects and that these operate quite differently for hard and soft fixes. Using annual data for 31 emerging and 32 developing countries during 1990-2003, our analysis implies that hard fixes should have much stronger discipline effects on money growth and inflation and our empirical study supports their prediction. Our theoretical analysis suggests that neither hard nor soft fixes are likely to provide strong discipline over fiscal policy and this is confirmed by our empirical analysis as well

    BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Investigators have suggested that the chemokine receptor CCR1 plays a role in multiple myeloma. Studies using antisense and neutralizing antibodies to CCR1 showed that down-regulation of the receptor altered disease progression in a mouse model. More recently, experiments utilizing scid mice injected with human myeloma cells demonstrated that the CCR1 antagonist BX471 reduced osteolytic lesions, while the CCR1 antagonist MLN-3897 prevented myeloma cell adhesion to osteoclasts. However, information is limited regarding the pharmacology of CCR1 antagonists in myeloma cells. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH: We compared several well-studied CCR1 antagonists including AZD4818, BX471, CCX354, CP-481715, MLN-3897 and PS899877 for their ability to inhibit binding of [(125)I]-CCL3 in vitro using membranes prepared from RPMI 8226 cells, a human multiple myeloma cell line that endogenously expresses CCR1. In addition, antagonists were assessed for their ability to modulate CCL3-mediated internalization of CCR1 and CCL3-mediated cell migration using RPMI 8226 cells. As many GPCRs signal through ÎČ-arrestin-dependent pathways that are separate and distinct from those driven by G-proteins, we also evaluated the compounds for their ability to alter ÎČ-arrestin translocation. KEY RESULTS: There were clear differences between the CCR1 antagonists in their ability to inhibit CCL3 binding to myeloma cells, as well as in their ability to inhibit G-protein-dependent and -independent functional responses. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: Our studies demonstrate that tissue phenotype seems to be relevant with regards to CCR1. Moreover, it appears that for CCR1 antagonists, inhibition of ÎČ-arrestin translocation is not necessarily linked to chemotaxis or receptor internalization

    The ‘Coral Bulker’ Fuel Oil Spill on the North Coast of Portugal: Spatial and Temporal Biomarker Responses in Mytilus galloprovincialis

    In December 2000, the ship ‘Coral Bulker’ ran aground at the entrance of the port of Viana do Castelo (North–west coast of Portugal). A large amount of fuel oil was spilled and part of it reached the shore. To evaluate the spatial and temporal impact of this oil spill, a field study, and several laboratory toxicity tests were performed using Mytilus galloprovincialis as biological indicator of environmental contamination and the biomarkers glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) as indicative criteria. Fifteen days after the oil spill, mussels collected at stations located near the ship presented higher and lower values of GSTs and AChE activity, respectively. These results, and those obtained in the laboratory toxicity tests, evidence that these biomarkers were sensitive indicators of exposure to this kind of pollution and were able to monitor a spatial impact of the oil spill of at least 10 km, confirming the higher level of contamination near the ship and a contamination gradient along the sampling stations. One year after the accident, such a contamination gradient was no longer evident. This study highlight the potential suitability of a biomarker approach for assessing spatial and temporal impacts of marine pollution accidents, such as fuel oil spills, suggesting the inclusion of these biomarkers in risk assessment studies, as cost-effective and early warning recognized tools.
