    Use of NASTRAN as a teaching aid

    Recent experiences with incorporating NASTRAN as a teaching tool in undergraduate courses was found pedagogically sound. Students with no previous computerized structures background are able to readily grasp the program's logic and begin solving realistic problems rapidly. The educational benefit is significantly enhanced by NASTRAN's plotting feature. However, the cost of operating the level 12 version makes the program difficult to justify

    Contributions to the width difference in the neutral DD system from hadronic decays

    Recent studies of several multi-body D0D^0 meson decays have revealed that the final states are dominantly CPCP-even. However, the small value of the width difference between the two physical eigenstates of the D0D^0-D‾0\overline{D}{}^0 system indicates that the total widths of decays to CPCP-even and CPCP-odd final states should be the same to within about a percent. The known contributions to the width difference from hadronic D0D^0 decays are discussed, and it is shown that an apparent excess of quasi-CPCP-even modes is balanced, within current uncertainty, by interference effects in quasi-flavour-specific decays.     An application of NASTRAN to the structural analysis of light aircraft was conducted to determine the cost effectiveness. A model of the Baby Ace D model homebuilt aircraft was used. The NASTRAN model of the aircraft consists of 193 grid points connected by 352 structural members. All members are either rod or beam elements, including bending of unsymmetrical cross sections and torsion of noncircular cross sections. The aerodynamic loads applied to the aircraft were in accordance with FAA regulations governing the utility category aircraft

    Maser radiometer for cosmic background radiation anisotropy measurements

    A maser amplifier was incorporated into a low noise radiometer designed to measure large-scale anisotropy in the 3 deg K microwave background radiation. To minimize emission by atmospheric water vapor and oxygen, the radiometer is flown in a small balloon to an altitude to 25 km. Three successful flights were made - two from Palestine, Texas and one from Sao Jose dos Campos, Brazil. Good sky coverage is important to the experiment.     The Application of a Cylindrical-spherical Floating Ring Bearing as a Device to Control Stability of Turbogenerators

    The development of a new device to control stability of turbogenerators is described. The device comprises a floating ring installed between the journal and bearing housing of a fluid film bearing. The journal and the inner surface of the ring are cylindrical while the outer surface of the ring and bearing surface are spherical providing axial location of the ring and self-alignment of the bearing. The employment of this device would lead to a consistent machine performance. System stability may be controlled by changing a number of bearing and floating ring parameters. This device also offers an additional advantage of having a very low frictional characteristic. A feasibility study was carried out to investigate the suitability of the new device to turbogenerator applications. Both theoretical analysis and experimental observations were carried out. Initial results suggest that the new floating ring device is a competitive alternative to other conventional arrangements

    Assessment of treatment response in tuberculosis

    Antibiotic treatment of tuberculosis has a duration of several months. There is significant variability of the host immune response and the pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic properties of Mycobacterium tuberculosis sub-populations at the site of disease. A limitation of sputum-based measures of treatment response may be sub-optimal detection and monitoring of Mycobacterium tuberculosis sub-populations. Potential biomarkers and surrogate endpoints should be benchmarked against hard clinical outcomes (failure/relapse/death) and may need tailoring to specific patient populations. Here, we assess the evidence supporting currently utilized and future potential host and pathogen-based models and biomarkers for monitoring treatment response in active and latent tuberculosis.
