High performance thin film bulk acoustic resonator covered with carbon nanotubes

    Get PDF
This letter presents experimental results concerning a thin film bulk acoustic wave resonator realized on a thin GaN membrane and covered with a thin film of double walled carbon nanotube mixture. The quality factor was measured before and after the coating of the resonator with the nanotube thin film. The quality factor has increased more than ten times when the resonator was coated with nanotubes, due to their high elasticity modulus and low density, which confers a much higher acoustic impedance of the resonator electrodes and thus confines much better the longitudinal acoustic standing waves inside the resonator

Customer Focus in European Higher Education Systems

    Get PDF
This article looks at the idea and practice of “customer focus” in higher education. As a global trend with origins in the business and corporate world, customer focus has come to increasingly shape public services worldwide. Influenced by business thinking, terminology, and practices, governmental organizations across policy areas have used customer focus to reform public services in order to bring them closer to the demands and expectations of their users. The paper particularly analyzes changes in customer focus understanding and its implications for the European higher education policies. The aim of the article is to contribute to a better conceptualization and policy understanding of this growing approach to higher education reform.fi=vertaisarvioitu|en=peerReviewed

MINPP1 prevents intracellular accumulation of the chelator inositol hexakisphosphate and is mutated in Pontocerebellar Hypoplasia

Inositol polyphosphates are vital metabolic and secondary messengers, involved in diverse cellular functions. Therefore, tight regulation of inositol polyphosphate metabolism is essential for proper cell physiology. Here, we describe an early-onset neurodegenerative syndrome caused by loss-of-function mutations in the multiple inositol-polyphosphate phosphatase 1 gene (MINPP1). Patients are found to have a distinct type of Pontocerebellar Hypoplasia with typical basal ganglia involvement on neuroimaging. We find that patient-derived and genome edited MINPP1−/− induced stem cells exhibit an inefficient neuronal differentiation combined with an increased cell death. MINPP1 deficiency results in an intracellular imbalance of the inositol polyphosphate metabolism. This metabolic defect is characterized by an accumulation of highly phosphorylated inositols, mostly inositol hexakisphosphate (IP6), detected in HEK293 cells, fibroblasts, iPSCs and differentiating neurons lacking MINPP1. In mutant cells, higher IP6 level is expected to be associated with an increased chelation of intracellular cations, such as iron or calcium, resulting in decreased levels of available ions. These data suggest the involvement of IP6-mediated chelation on Pontocerebellar Hypoplasia disease pathology and thereby highlight the critical role of MINPP1 in the regulation of human brain development and homeostasis

Studies Regarding the Eutrophication of the Negreni Reservoir In Botosani County

    No full text
The deterioration through eutrophication of the waters from natural and/or artificial reservoirs represents one of the most important problems for administrators and customers of water resources systems. This work presents some studies performed at the Negreni reservoir in Botosani County, situated on The Baseu River. It can not be used as drinkable water anymore, due to the uncontrolled development of vegetation. The causes of this phenomenon are complex. Anthropological activities are mainly responsible for disturbing the fragile ecological balance. Cleaning may be a valid solution, but it is always better to preserve and prevent, than to repair

PLUTO plus : Near-Complete Modeling of Affine Transformations for Parallelism and Locality

    No full text
Affine transformations have proven to be very powerful for loop restructuring due to their ability to model a very wide range of transformations. A single multi-dimensional affine function can represent a long and complex sequence of simpler transformations. Existing affine transformation frameworks like the Pluto algorithm, that include a cost function for modern multicore architectures where coarse-grained parallelism and locality are crucial, consider only a sub-space of transformations to avoid a combinatorial explosion in finding the transformations. The ensuing practical tradeoffs lead to the exclusion of certain useful transformations, in particular, transformation compositions involving loop reversals and loop skewing by negative factors. In this paper, we propose an approach to address this limitation by modeling a much larger space of affine transformations in conjunction with the Pluto algorithm's cost function. We perform an experimental evaluation of both, the effect on compilation time, and performance of generated codes. The evaluation shows that our new framework, Pluto+, provides no degradation in performance in any of the Polybench benchmarks. For Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) codes with periodic boundary conditions, it provides a mean speedup of 1.33x over Pluto. We also show that Pluto+ does not increase compile times significantly. Experimental results on Polybench show that Pluto+ increases overall polyhedral source-to-source optimization time only by 15%. In cases where it improves execution time significantly, it increased polyhedral optimization time only by 2.04x

MEMS switch for 60 GHz band

    No full text
The aim of this work was to develop a new MEMS switch structure for millimeter wave applications, which can be integrated with other more complex devices for developing of reconfigurable filters or antennae for microwave or millimeter wave frequency range. Electrostatic force was chosen for the switching operation, which seams to be the only way to obtain high reliable and wafer scale manufacturing techniques at these frequencies. Different geometries of the switching element were designed and manufactured in order to study the mechanical stability of these structures; the measured actuation voltage, of about 24,5V, shows an acceptable value for the further applications. Measured and simulated results of these structures (insertion losses of about 0.75dB@60GHz and isolation >50dB@60GHz) were in good agreement and are promising for further applications in this frequency range
