Introduction and Expression of a Rabbit β-globin Gene in Mouse Fibroblasts
The cloned chromosomal rabbit ß-globin gene has been introduced into mouse fibroblasts by DNA-mediated gene transfer (transformation). In this report, we examine the expression of the rabbit gene in six independent transformants that contain from 1 to 20 copies of the cloned globin gene. Rabbit globin transcripts were detected in two of these transformants at steady-state concentrations of 5 and 2 copies per cell. The globin transcripts from one cell line are polyadenylylated and migrate as 9S RNA on methylmercury gels. These transcripts reflect correct processing of the two intervening sequences but lack 48 ± 5 nucleotides present at the 5' terminus of rabbit erythrocyte globin mRNA
4d Conformal Field Theories and Strings on Orbifolds
We propose correspondences between 4d quantum field theories with N=2,1,0
(super)conformal invariance and Type IIB string theory on various orbifolds. We
argue using the spacetime string theory, and check using the beta functions
(exactly for N=2,1 and so far at 1-loop for the gauge couplings in the N=0
case), that these theories have conformal fixed lines. The latter case
potentially gives well-defined non-supersymmetric vacua of string theory, with
a mechanism for making the curvature and cosmological constant small at
nontrivial string coupling. We suggest a correspondence between
nonsupersymmetric conformal fixed lines and nonsupersymmetric string vacua with
vanishing vacuum energy.Comment: 11 pages, harvmac big. Reference adde
Hodge Duality on the Brane
It has been claimed that whereas scalars can be bound to a Randall-Sundrum
brane, higher p-form potentials cannot, in contradiction with the Hodge duality
between 0-form and 3-form potentials in the five-dimensional bulk. Here we show
that a 3-form in the bulk correctly yields a 2-form on the brane, in complete
agreement with both bulk and brane duality. We also emphasize that the
phenomenon of photon screening in the Randall-Sundrum geometry is ruled out by
the bulk Einstein equation.Comment: 6 pages, Latex. We emphasize that the phenomenon of photon screening

Experimental Verification of the Theory of Oscillating Airfoils
Measurements have been made of the lift on an airfoil in pitching oscillation with a continuous-recording, instantaneous-force balance. The experimental values for the phase difference between the angle of attack and the lift are shown to be in close agreement with theory
Dietary Patterns and Cognitive Function among Older Community-Dwelling Adults.
Diet may be an important modifiable risk factor for maintenance of cognitive health in later life. This study aimed at examining associations between common dietary indices and dietary patterns defined by factor analysis and cognitive function in older community-dwelling adults. Dietary information for 1499 participants from the Rancho Bernardo Study was collected in 1988⁻1992 and used to calculate the alternate Mediterranean diet score, Alternate Healthy Eating Index (AHEI)-2010 score and factor scores derived from factor analysis of nutrients. Global cognitive function, executive function, verbal fluency and episodic memory were assessed at approximate four-year intervals from 1988⁻2016. Linear mixed models were used to examine associations between dietary patterns and cognitive trajectories. Estimates for the highest vs. lowest tertile in models adjusting for age, sex, education, energy intake, lifestyle variables and retest effect showed greater adherence to the Mediterranean score was associated with better baseline global cognitive function (β (95% CI) = 0.33 (0.11, 0.55)). The AHEI-2010 score was not significantly associated with cognitive performance. Higher loading on a plant polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA)/vitamin E factor was associated with better baseline global cognitive function and executive function (β = 0.22 (0.02, 0.42) and β = -7.85 (-13.20, -2.47)). A sugar/low protein factor was associated with poorer baseline cognitive function across multiple domains. Dietary patterns were not associated with cognitive decline over time. Adherence to a healthy diet with foods high in PUFA and vitamin E and a low sugar to protein ratio, as typified by a Mediterranean diet, may be beneficial for cognitive health in late life
AdS Bubbles, Entropy and Closed String Tachyons
We study the conjectured connection between AdS bubbles (AdS solitons) and
closed string tachyon condensations. We confirm that the entanglement entropy,
which measures the degree of freedom, decreases under the tachyon condensation.
The entropies in supergravity and free Yang-Mills agree with each other
remarkably. Next we consider the tachyon condensation on the AdS twisted circle
and argue that its endpoint is given by the twisted AdS bubble, defined by the
double Wick rotation of rotating black 3-brane solutions. We calculated the
Casimir energy and entropy and checked the agreements between the gauge and
gravity results. Finally we show an infinite boost of a null linear dilaton
theory with a tachyon wall (or bubble), leads to a solvable time-dependent
background with a bulk tachyon condensation. This is the simplest example of
spacetimes with null boundaries in string theory.Comment: 45 pages, 6 figures, harvmac, eq.(2.16) corrected, references adde
Local Eigenvalue Density for General MANOVA Matrices
We consider random n\times n matrices of the form
(XX*+YY*)^{-1/2}YY*(XX*+YY*)^{-1/2}, where X and Y have independent entries
with zero mean and variance one. These matrices are the natural generalization
of the Gaussian case, which are known as MANOVA matrices and which have joint
eigenvalue density given by the third classical ensemble, the Jacobi ensemble.
We show that, away from the spectral edge, the eigenvalue density converges to
the limiting density of the Jacobi ensemble even on the shortest possible
scales of order 1/n (up to \log n factors). This result is the analogue of the
local Wigner semicircle law and the local Marchenko-Pastur law for general
MANOVA matrices.Comment: Several small changes made to the tex
On the Matrix Description of Calabi-Yau Compactifications
We point out that the matrix description of M-theory compactified on
Calabi-Yau threefolds is in many respects simpler than the matrix description
of a compactification. This is largely because of the differences between
D6 branes wrapped on Calabi-Yau threefolds and D6 branes wrapped on six-tori.
In particular, if we define the matrix theory following the prescription of Sen
and Seiberg, we find that the remaining degrees of freedom are decoupled from
gravity.Comment: 12 pages, harvmac big; comment on 4d N=1 theories change
A New Handle on de Sitter Compactifications
We construct a large new class of de Sitter (and anti de Sitter) vacua of
critical string theory from flux compactifications on products of Riemann
surfaces. In the construction, the leading effects stabilizing the moduli are
perturbative. We show that these effects self-consistently dominate over
standard estimates for further and quantum corrections, via
tuning available from large flux and brane quantum numbers.Comment: 26 pages, harvmac big. v2: Correction generalizing specific
