An attempt has been triggered in this paper to slice the features of data sorting capabilities of UNESCO’s Java CDS/ISIS application (Saravanan, T. 2018b & 2018c). J-ISIS was initiated by UNESCO and further developed by Jean-claude Dauphin (2016). J-ISIS clears maximum WinISIS limitations and restrictions. J-ISIS includes the CDS/ISIS concepts to keep the assets and experience of the users. The effectiveness and efficiency of J-ISIS data sorting technique is evaluated in this paper. A bibliographic database comprising 1641 records is opted to test the J-ISIS sorting features. The database contains 17 fields, subfields and repeatable field. J-ISIS data sorting technique is very fast and more effective than the other techniques as J-ISIS adopts Berkeley DB to store all the records of a database and Lucene for creating Inverted files. J-ISIS has an embedded Web Browser, which helps to display the records in variety of the formats. J-ISIS time consumption to sort 1641 records with the 17 fields, subfields and repeatable field in text format is 17188 milliseconds for name, 31724 milliseconds for department, 30204 milliseconds for department & yr, and 29503 milliseconds for department & yr & name. To sort the records in html format, J-ISIS consumed 17448 milliseconds for name, 35024 milliseconds for department, 35486 milliseconds for department & yr, and 36143 milliseconds for department & yr & name. The results prove that the sorting techniques of J-ISIS are excellent in information processing and retrieval. This paper explores the sorting features of J-ISIS only, and no other applications/features are discussed

The paper sheds light on the strategy opted to sharpen the skills of the Library and Information Science Students in Colon Classification Scheme (6th Ed.). A few topics, namely Notational System, Main Class, Facet Formula and Postulates & Principles have been sliced here. Understanding the need and purpose of the said topics are a must for the freshers. The freshers should make their foundation as strong in the Normative Principles. Dr.S.R.Ranganathan (1967) insisted that the Colon Classification (6th Edition) techniques need to be taught to the students in the classroom with the help of Postulates and Principles. Students have had their sessions where enough exercises were worked out by them to gain more skills in the said topics. The strategy opted by the course teacher to sharpen the students’ skills and the outcomes have been measured using the six levels of Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy. The strategy enabled the course teacher to capture a clearer picture of the students’ capabilities and their progress ranges in the select topics. The students’ classroom activity encompasses multiple exercises along with the Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy levels, and some scoring indicators. Students were instructed to process the exercises at regular intervals, and in final, based on their skill levels they were directed to revise the topic or move to another topic. The classroom exercises encompass both the theory (Course Code: 19LISC103) and the practice (Course Code: 19LISC202) performed by the students are screened here for better understanding. The Main Class related exercises were performed by the students during the end semester (Course Code: 19LISC202). For illustrative purpose, two students’ outcomes are vouched here where a fast learner [Student-1 and Annexures-i & iii] performance covers all the topics (one exercise from each topic), and one topic, namely Rounds and Levels performed by a slow learner [Student-2 & Annexure-ii] have been extracted. The learning techniques opted by the students in the classroom to sharpen their skills in Notation types, Main Class, Facet Formula and Postulates & Principles enabled them to gain progress [See Annexures-i, ii & iii] in the selected topics. Further, the structured exercise formats let the course teacher to evaluate the strength and weakness of each student’s skills in the same fields. The topics encompass Notation types, Main Class (BCN to BC, BC to BCN and BC & BCN), the Postulates namely, Postulate of Basic Facet, Postulate of Isolate Facet, Postulate of Rounds and Levels, Postulates for Facet Sequence, and the Principle related to Wall-Picture concept. Further, the Facet Formula related practice also has been given to raise the students’ skills in making possible arrangements among the identified facets. Who Knows? Today they are learners and may become an expert tomorrow when they acquire adequate knowledge and expertise in Colon Classification. The students reflected over-whelming responses while they practice the exercises in the classroom using the structured formats. Adequate charts have been generated to detect the students’ skills and progress in each level as well as the overall level in a crystal-clear way. The fast learner performance is given in the Annexure-i while the slow learner performance can be traced from the Annexure-ii. A few sample titles and practice format are given in the Annexure-iii. The general format of student performance evaluation report is at Annexure-iv. For illustrative purpose, this paper screens the fast learner performance report. The students feedback form for the said course is at Annexure-v

This paper discusses the methods the course teacher used to teach the Information Processing and Retrieval course [Course Code: 19LISC302]. A few aspects, including Chain Indexing, KWIC, Boolean operators, queries, logical relations, and recall & precision, have been highlighted here for illustration. The course teacher was able to improve the students\u27 knowledge of the mentioned areas by using teaching methods based on the Revised Bloom\u27s Taxonomy. The methods also made it possible to follow the students\u27 progress. Boolean operators, queries, logical relations, and recall & precision exercises are taken into consideration for the discussions here, but chain indexing and KWIC related classroom practice formats are only supplied at Annexure-i. The course teacher created the application that is connected to logical relations (Truth Table), and the students have used it in class to practice. Various multifaceted key phrases, a few queries, the Boolean operators AND, OR, and NOT, and the Truth Table are all included in the aforementioned programme. For students to successfully obtain pertinent data from any database, they must have a solid understanding of logical ideas. Meaningful results won\u27t be produced by executing the queries and operators automatically or blindly. Additionally, it could need extra time from information seekers. Boolean operators are used in information retrieval systems to evaluate queries. The Boolean operators are typically linked to the classes in the queries. The evaluation for each class is either True or False. To effectively use the operators in search queries and extract the necessary data, learners need be familiar with the Truth Table-related concepts. In addition, for the aforementioned subjects other than Chain Indexing and KWIC, the Revised Bloom\u27s Taxonomy based teaching and the students\u27 evaluation techniques have also been presented here. Wherever needed, enough screenshots of the aforementioned programme are produced. Students used a learning approach based on Revised Bloom\u27s Taxonomy to study the concepts linked to the aforementioned themes, and they have been duly documented below. With the use of the methodologies utilised in this study, the teacher was able to glean the essential information necessary for determining the pupils\u27 degrees of learning ability and applying that information to the necessary charts. The charts show the students\u27 competence levels according to themes, making it simple to see the students\u27 skill status. Realizing their ability levels is aided by each level wise clearance and their overall clearance status. Chain indexing, KWIC, logical relations, queries with Boolean operators, database sample records format, RBT levels-based evaluation format, recall, and precision are the examples of exercise forms shown in Annexure-i. Further, overall progress charts, each level wise progress charts and Student performance evaluation report are given at Annexure-ii, Annexure-iii and Annexure-iv respectively

Total free sugars, reducing sugars and glucose

    Get PDF
Carbohydrates in the tissues of crustaceans exist as free sugars and as bound with proteins (Saravanan, 1979). The free sugars in haemolymph consist of mono, di and oligosaccharides. All monosaccharides, maltose and its oligosaccharides constitute the total reducing sugars. Trehalose constitutes the non-reducing sugar fraction of the total free sugars. The total free sugars are estimated by Anthrone method and reducing sugar by Nelson-Somogyi method. The difference in the values obtained by these two methods indicates total non-reducing sugar value which is primarily trehalose in crustacean blood. The glucose can be determined by Glucose-oxidase method. The difference between values of glucose and reducing sugars would indicate the concentration of non-glucose reducing sugars

Background: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common bacterial illnesses and hence one of the most important indications for antibiotic treatment. Current knowledge of the common organisms implicated in causing UTI in the local community and surveillance to monitor the changes in susceptibility of uropathogens are imperative to ensure appropriate therapy. The study objectives were to assess the proportion of UTI caused by each of the common urinary pathogens, to study the antibiotic drug sensitivity patterns by analyzing the culture and sensitivity reports and to identify the drugs which would be potentially favourable candidates for empirical therapy in the study locale. Methods: This hospital based cross sectional study was done by collecting the data from case records of patients who attended OPD or were admitted with diagnosis of UTI during the study period. Results: Escherichia coli was the single most important cause of UTI, accounting for 70% of the infection among the studied subjects, amongst which 55% was extended spectrum beta-lactamase producing organisms. A pattern of increased susceptibility to higher antibiotics like ertapenem, tigecycline and decreased sensitivity to fluroquinolones was evident. In addition, nitrofurantoin was found to be one of the antibiotics to which most of the organisms were susceptible (85%) favouring its use in empirical therapy of UTI.Conclusions: The pattern of accentuated susceptibility to higher antibiotics in the face of declining trend in the sensitivity to commonly used antibiotics necessitates promoting awareness on the need for rational prescribing of antibiotics among clinicians
