The Birmingham-CfA cluster scaling project - II. Mass composition and distribution
We investigate the spatial distribution of the baryonic and non-baryonic mass
components in a sample of 66 virialized systems. We have used X-ray
measurements to determine the deprojected temperature and density structure of
the intergalactic medium and have employed these to map the underlying
gravitational potential. In addition, we have measured the deprojected spatial
distribution of galaxy luminosity for a subset of this sample, spanning over 2
decades in mass. With this combined X-ray/optical study we examine the scaling
properties of the baryons and address the issue of mass-to-light (M/L) ratio in
groups and clusters of galaxies. We measure a median mass-to-light ratio of 224
h70 M/L (solar) in the rest frame B_j band, in good agreement with other
measurements based on X-ray determined masses. There is no trend in M/L with
X-ray temperature and no significant trend for mass to increase faster than
luminosity: M \propto \L_{B,j}^{1.08 +/- 0.12}. This implied lack of
significant variation in star formation efficiency suggests that gas cooling
cannot be greatly enhanced in groups, unless it drops out to form baryonic dark
matter. Correspondingly, our results indicate that non-gravitational heating
must have played a significant role in establishing the observed departure from
self-similarity in low mass systems. The median baryon fraction for our sample
is 0.162 h70^{-3/2}, which allows us to place an upper limit on the
cosmological matter density, Omega_m <= 0.27 h70^{-1}, in good agreement with
the latest results from WMAP. We find evidence of a systematic trend towards
higher central density concentration in the coolest haloes, indicative of an
early formation epoch and consistent with hierarchical formation models.Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures; published in MNRAS. Corrected mistake in

On Robust Face Recognition via Sparse Encoding: the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
In the field of face recognition, Sparse Representation (SR) has received
considerable attention during the past few years. Most of the relevant
literature focuses on holistic descriptors in closed-set identification
applications. The underlying assumption in SR-based methods is that each class
in the gallery has sufficient samples and the query lies on the subspace
spanned by the gallery of the same class. Unfortunately, such assumption is
easily violated in the more challenging face verification scenario, where an
algorithm is required to determine if two faces (where one or both have not
been seen before) belong to the same person. In this paper, we first discuss
why previous attempts with SR might not be applicable to verification problems.
We then propose an alternative approach to face verification via SR.
Specifically, we propose to use explicit SR encoding on local image patches
rather than the entire face. The obtained sparse signals are pooled via
averaging to form multiple region descriptors, which are then concatenated to
form an overall face descriptor. Due to the deliberate loss spatial relations
within each region (caused by averaging), the resulting descriptor is robust to
misalignment & various image deformations. Within the proposed framework, we
evaluate several SR encoding techniques: l1-minimisation, Sparse Autoencoder
Neural Network (SANN), and an implicit probabilistic technique based on
Gaussian Mixture Models. Thorough experiments on AR, FERET, exYaleB, BANCA and
ChokePoint datasets show that the proposed local SR approach obtains
considerably better and more robust performance than several previous
state-of-the-art holistic SR methods, in both verification and closed-set
identification problems. The experiments also show that l1-minimisation based
encoding has a considerably higher computational than the other techniques, but
leads to higher recognition rates
Building a diversity featured search system by fusing existing tools
This paper describes our diversity featured retrieval system which are built for the task
of ImageCLEFPhoto 2008. Two existing tools are used: Solr and Carrot. We have
experimented with different settings of the system to see how the performance changes.
The results suggest that the system can indeed increase diversity of the retrieved results
and keep the precision about the same
Creating a test collection to evaluate diversity in image retrieval
This paper describes the adaptation of an existing test collection
for image retrieval to enable diversity in the results set to be
measured. Previous research has shown that a more diverse set of
results often satisfies the needs of more users better than standard
document rankings. To enable diversity to be quantified, it is
necessary to classify images relevant to a given theme to one or
more sub-topics or clusters. We describe the challenges in
building (as far as we are aware) the first test collection for
evaluating diversity in image retrieval. This includes selecting
appropriate topics, creating sub-topics, and quantifying the overall
effectiveness of a retrieval system. A total of 39 topics were
augmented for cluster-based relevance and we also provide an
initial analysis of assessor agreement for grouping relevant
images into sub-topics or clusters
Overview of the ImageCLEFphoto 2008 photographic retrieval task
ImageCLEFphoto 2008 is an ad-hoc photo retrieval task and part of the ImageCLEF
evaluation campaign. This task provides both the resources and the framework
necessary to perform comparative laboratory-style evaluation of visual information
retrieval systems. In 2008, the evaluation task concentrated on promoting diversity
within the top 20 results from a multilingual image collection. This new challenge
attracted a record number of submissions: a total of 24 participating groups
submitting 1,042 system runs. Some of the findings include that the choice of
annotation language is almost negligible and the best runs are by combining concept
and content-based retrieval methods
The Birmingham-CfA cluster scaling project - III: entropy and similarity in galaxy systems
We examine profiles and scaling properties of the entropy of the
intergalactic gas in a sample of 66 virialized systems, ranging in mass from
single elliptical galaxies to rich clusters, for which we have resolved X-ray
temperature profiles. Some of the properties we derive appear to be
inconsistent with any of the models put forward to explain the breaking of
self-similarity in the baryon content of clusters. In particular, the entropy
profiles, scaled to the virial radius, are broadly similar in form across the
sample, apart from a normalization factor which differs from the simple
self-similar scaling with temperature. Low mass systems do not show the large
isentropic cores predicted by preheating models, and the high entropy excesses
reported at large radii in groups by Finoguenov et al (2002) are confirmed, and
found to extend even to moderately rich clusters. We discuss the implications
of these results for the evolutionary history of the hot gas in clusters, and
suggest that preheating may affect the entropy of intracluster gas primarily by
reducing the density of material accreting into groups and clusters along

Bags of Affine Subspaces for Robust Object Tracking
We propose an adaptive tracking algorithm where the object is modelled as a
continuously updated bag of affine subspaces, with each subspace constructed
from the object's appearance over several consecutive frames. In contrast to
linear subspaces, affine subspaces explicitly model the origin of subspaces.
Furthermore, instead of using a brittle point-to-subspace distance during the
search for the object in a new frame, we propose to use a subspace-to-subspace
distance by representing candidate image areas also as affine subspaces.
Distances between subspaces are then obtained by exploiting the non-Euclidean
geometry of Grassmann manifolds. Experiments on challenging videos (containing
object occlusions, deformations, as well as variations in pose and
illumination) indicate that the proposed method achieves higher tracking

Mortality and Malnutrition Among Populations Living in South Darfur, Sudan: Results of 3 Surveys, September 2004.
CONTEXT: Mass violence against civilians in the west of Sudan has resulted in the displacement of more than 1.5 million people (25% of the population of the Darfur region). Most of these people are camped in 142 settlements. There has been increasing international concern about the health status of the displaced population. OBJECTIVE: To perform rapid epidemiological assessments of mortality and nutritional status at 3 sites in South Darfur for relief efforts. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In August and September 2004, mortality surveys were conducted among 137,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) in 3 sites in South Darfur (Kass [n = 900 households], Kalma [n = 893 households], and Muhajiria [n = 900 households]). A nutritional survey was performed concomitantly among children aged 6 to 59 months using weight for height as an index of acute malnutrition (Kass [n = 894], Kalma [n = 888], and Muhajiria [n = 896]). A questionnaire detailing access to food and basic services was administered to a subset of households (n = 210 in each site). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Crude and under 5-year mortality rates and nutritional status of IDPs in Kass, Kalma, and Muhajiria, South Darfur. RESULTS: Crude mortality rates, expressed as deaths per 10,000 per day, were 3.2 (95% confidence interval [CI], 2.2-4.1) in Kass, 2.0 (95% CI, 1.3-2.7) in Kalma, and 2.3 (95% CI, 1.2-3.4) in Muhajiria. Under 5-year mortality rates were 5.9 (95% CI, 3.8-8.0) in Kass, 3.5 (95% CI, 1.5-5.7) in Kalma, and 1.0 (95% CI, 0.03-1.9) in Muhajiria. During the period of displacement covered by our survey in Muhajiria, violence was reported to be responsible for 72% of deaths, mainly among young men. Diarrheal disease was reported to cause between 25% and 47% of deaths in camp residents and mainly affected the youngest and oldest age groups. Acute malnutrition was common, affecting 14.1% of the target population in Kass, 23.6% in Kalma, and 10.7% in Muhajiria. CONCLUSION: This study provides epidemiological evidence of the high rates of mortality and malnutrition among the displaced population in South Darfur and reinforces the need to mount appropriate and timely humanitarian responses

Millimetre and submillimetre molecular line observations of the reflection nebula NGC 2023
Observations in the CO J = 2 - 1, CO J = 3 - 2 and HCO+ J = 4 - 3 transitions of the molecular cloud associated with NGC 2023 are presented. The observations reveal the complex structure of the gas in the surrounding cloud, and show the presence of several hot-spots which may represent separate bodies of gas. A search has been made for the source of excitation of two nearby groups of Herbig-Haro objects recently discovered by Malin et al. (1987). No such objects can be clearly identified from the data. CO J = 3 - 2 spectra taken at positions lying on the CO J = 1 - 0 shell observed by Gatley et al. (1987) show marked enhancements in peak line strength relative to coincident CO J = 2 - 1 data. By contrast, no such enhancements are observed away from the shell. Observations of the submillimeter wavelength HCO+ J = 4 - 3 transition show that the line strength is greatest in the vicinity of the shell structure. Simple large velocity gradient modeling of the excitation conditions of the shell material suggests that the gas may be hot (Tkin ~ 140 K), dense, and optically thin
