    ELT Teacher Trainees Attitudes Towards Environmental Education And Their Tendency To Use It In The Language Classroom

    With the change of focus in language teaching from grammar-based approaches to more communicative approaches, contextual language learning gained importance and found body in the English Language classroom. Global issues constitute one of the most popular contexts for purposeful language learning and meaningful language use. Increasing number of ELT (English Language Teaching) course books involve global issues in their content. Within the scope of socially responsible teaching (SRT) it is believed that it is the teachers responsibility to help their learners develop awareness on these issues. From this perspective current research aims to shed some light into ELT teacher education process by investigating teacher trainees attitudes and tendencies towards environmental education and their inclusion in the ELT lessons. Data for the research is collected from 224 third year ELT teacher trainees via a questionnaire prepared by the researchers. The reliability of the questionnaire was tested by using Cronbachs alpha and found to be .821 . As a result, it was found that third year ELT teacher trainees have mildly positive attitudes on environmental education. In addition, there were no statistically significant differences among the participants sex and their membership at environmental organizations on their attitudes towards environmental education and their tendency to use them in language education. The result of this study is significant for numerous stakeholders, including teacher education programs, Ministry of Education, state leaders and surrounding communities and families of English language learners in relation with the efforts to integrate environmental education to the ELT curriculum

    Morphology of the ultraviolet Io footprint emission and its control by Io's location

    [1] A total of 74 images of the ultraviolet footprint of the Io flux tube (IFT) on Jupiter's upper atmosphere made with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on board the Hubble Space Telescope have been analyzed to characterize their location, morphology, and brightness distribution. The observations cover a wide range of central meridian Jovian longitudes and Io orbital positions and include north and south footprint emissions. Comparing the location of the IFT with that expected from the VIP4 model of the Jovian magnetic field, we find that the lead angle is generally not significantly different from zero in the System III longitude sector 125 degrees - 195 degrees. Instead, the lead angles reach about 8 degrees in the 50 degrees sector, coinciding with a region of possible magnetic anomaly. We observe that the brightness of the main footprint shows intrinsic intensity changes that appear to be controlled by the system III longitude of Io and its position above or below the center of the torus. The size of the primary spot magnetically maps into a region varying from 1 to over 10 Io diameters in Io's orbital plane. Multiple footprints are observed with varying brightness relative to the mean spot. The number of spots is found to increase as Io gets closer to the torus outer edge facing the spots. The separation between the first and second spots is typically 1 degrees-3 degrees of longitude and increases when Io is displaced from the torus center in the direction of the IFT signature. These features confirm that Alfven waves play an important role and generate energization of precipitated electrons. However, the observed variation of the FUV spot structure with Io's position appears inconsistent with models where reflections of Alfven wings occur between the torus boundary and Jupiter's ionosphere. Instead, the multiple spots apparently correspond to electron precipitation generated by Alfven waves reflected inside the plasma torus

    Nanoscale addressing and manipulation of neutral atoms using electromagnetically induced transparency

    We propose to integrate dark-state based localization techniques into a neutral atom quantum computing architecture and numerically investigate two specific schemes. The first scheme implements state-selective projective measurement by scattering photons from a specific qubit with very little cross talk on the other atoms in the ensemble. The second scheme performs a single-qubit phase gate on the target atom with an incoherent spontaneous emission probability as low as 0.01. Our numerical simulations in rubidium (Rb) atoms show that for both of these schemes a spatial resolution at the level of tens of nanometers using near-infrared light can be achieved with experimentally realistic parameters

    Molecular structure, vibrational spectral investigation and the confirmation analysis of 4-Methylesculetin molecule

    WOS: 000333614200003In this work, FT-IR, FT-Raman, and FT-NMR spectra of 4-Methylesculetin molecule are presented for the first time. FT-IR, FT-Raman, and FT-NMR spectra of 4MEC have been recorded and analyzed. The FT-IR and FT-Raman spectra of this molecule are recorded at 4000-400 cm(-1) and 50-3500 cm(-1), respectively. The infrared vibrational frequencies, absolute intensities, potential energy profile, HOMO-LUMO plot and NBO analysis of the molecule have been also predicted using Becke's three-parameter hybrid B3LYP method in the density functional theory DFT method.     ASSESSING THE IMPACT OF BEET WEBWORM MOTHS ON SUNFLOWER FIELDS USING MULTITEMPORAL SENTINEL-2 SATELLITE IMAGERY AND VEGETATION INDICES

    Remote sensing technology plays a crucial role in detecting and monitoring environmental issues, offering the ability to monitor large areas, diagnose problems early, and facilitate accurate interventions. By integrating in-situ data with qualitative measurements obtained from satellite images, comprehensive insights can be obtained, and statistical inferences can be established. This study focuses on analyzing the damages caused by beet webworm moths (Loxostege sticticalis) in sunflower fields located in the Ortaca neighborhood of Tekirdağ province in Thrace region, utilizing Sentinel-2 satellite images and in-situ data collected from the sunflower fields in Ortaca. The relationship between different spectral indices, such as the Enhanced Vegetation Index, Chlorophyll Index Green, and spectral transformation techniques like Tasseled Cap Greenness, derived from Sentinel-2 satellite images, and the observed damage rates in various sunflower fields' in-situ data was investigated. The results revealed a negative correlation between the variables, highlighting EVI as the most effective indicator of damage among the plant indices. Leveraging these findings, a damage map was generated using EVI, enabling visual interpretation of the damage status in other sunflower fields within the study area. These findings offer valuable insights into the impact of pests on sunflower crops, despite the accuracy evaluation results falling below the desired level, with an overall accuracy of 75% and a Kappa accuracy of 65%, attributed to the limited availability of in-situ data

    New method to characterize a machining system: application in turning

    Many studies simulates the machining process by using a single degree of freedom spring-mass sytem to model the tool stiffness, or the workpiece stiffness, or the unit tool-workpiece stiffness in modelings 2D. Others impose the tool action, or use more or less complex modelings of the efforts applied by the tool taking account the tool geometry. Thus, all these models remain two-dimensional or sometimes partially three-dimensional. This paper aims at developing an experimental method allowing to determine accurately the real three-dimensional behaviour of a machining system (machine tool, cutting tool, tool-holder and associated system of force metrology six-component dynamometer). In the work-space model of machining, a new experimental procedure is implemented to determine the machining system elastic behaviour. An experimental study of machining system is presented. We propose a machining system static characterization. A decomposition in two distinct blocks of the system "Workpiece-Tool-Machine" is realized. The block Tool and the block Workpiece are studied and characterized separately by matrix stiffness and displacement (three translations and three rotations). The Castigliano's theory allows us to calculate the total stiffness matrix and the total displacement matrix. A stiffness center point and a plan of tool tip static displacement are presented in agreement with the turning machining dynamic model and especially during the self induced vibration. These results are necessary to have a good three-dimensional machining system dynamic characterization

    Periprostatic fat measured on computed tomography as a marker for prostate cancer aggressiveness

    Contains fulltext : 89797.pdf (publisher's version ) (Closed access)OBJECTIVE: Several reports found that obesity was associated with prostate cancer (PC) aggressiveness among men treated with radical prostatectomy or radiotherapy. Studies concerning this issue have basically relied on body mass index (BMI), as a marker for general obesity. Because visceral fat is the most metabolic active fat, we sought to evaluate if periprostatic fat measured on a computed tomography (CT) is a better marker than BMI to predict PC aggressiveness in a Dutch population who underwent brachytherapy for localized PC. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Of the 902 patients who underwent brachytherapy, 725 CT scans were available. Subcutaneous fat thickness (CFT), periprostatic fat area (cm(2)) and fat-density (%) were determined on the CT scan. Patients were stratified into three groups: 75 percentile of the fat-density. Associations between the three fat-density subgroups and BMI and PC aggressiveness were examined. RESULTS: 237 patients were classified as having normal weight (37.2%), 320 as overweight (50.2%) and 80 as obese (12.6%). There was a strong significant association between BMI and fat-density and CFT. The strongest correlation was seen between BMI and CFT (Pearson r coefficient = 0.71). Logistic regression analysis revealed no statistically significant association between the different fat measurements and the risk of having a high-risk disease. CONCLUSIONS: Periprostatic fat and fat-density as measured with CT were not correlated with PC aggressiveness in patients receiving brachytherapy.     Effect of age, impaction types and operative time on inflammatory tissue reactions following lower third molar surgery

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Postoperative mobidity following third molar surgery is affected by a number of factors. The study of these factors is essential for effective planning and limitation of morbidity. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of age, type of impaction and operative time on immediate postoperative tissue reactions following mandibular third molar surgery.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Consecutive patients with impacted mandibular third molar teeth were studied. All the third molars were classified according to Winter's classification. Surgical extraction was performed on all the patients by a single surgeon under local anaesthesia. The operation time was determined by the time lapse between incision and completion of suturing. Postoperative pain, swelling and trismus were evaluated.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>There were 120 patients with an age range of 19-42 years. Patients in the age range of 35-42 years recorded a lower pain score (p = 0.5) on day 1. The mouth opening was much better in the lower age group on day 2 and 5 (p = 0.007 and p = 0.01 respectively). Pain, swelling and trismus increased with increasing operative time. Distoangular impaction was significantly associated with higher VAS score on day 1 and 2 (p = 0.01, 0.0, 04). Distoangular and horizontal impaction are associated with a higher degree of swelling and reduced mouth opening on postoperative review days. Vertical impaction was associated with the least degree of facial swelling and best mouth opening.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Increasing operating time and advancing age are associated with more postoperative morbidity, likewise distoangular and horizontal impaction types.</p

    Efficacy of Er:YAG laser on periodontitis as an adjunctive non‐surgical treatment: A split‐mouth randomized controlled study

    Aim To evaluate the adjunctive efficacy of Er:YAG laser use with mechanical scaling and root planing (SRP ) for non‐surgical treatment of periodontitis. Materials and Methods In a randomized, single‐blinded, controlled trial, 27 patients were recruited. Using a split‐mouth design, two quadrants were randomly allocated into either a test group or a control group. The test quadrants received Er:YAG laser (ERL ; 100 mJ /pulse; 15 Hz to hard tissue and 50 mJ /pulse; 30 Hz to soft tissue) plus SRP treatment, while the control quadrants received SRP only. We evaluated periodontal indexes, including probing depth (PD ), clinical attachment level (CAL ), bleeding index (BI ), and plaque index (PLI ) at baseline, 3 months, and 6 months. Results The PD and CAL means in the ERL + SRP group were significantly lower than those in the SRP group at 3‐month follow‐up (PD : 2.98 ± 0.38 mm vs. 3.09 ± 0.35 mm; CAL : 4.51 ± 0.69 mm vs. 4.72 ± 0.67 mm) and 6‐month follow‐up (PD : 2.91 ± 0.31 mm vs. 3.02 ± 0.30 mm; CAL : 4.52 ± 0.65 mm vs. 4.72 ± 0.66 mm; p = 0.03 for both PD and CAL ). There were no significant differences in BI and PLI between two groups. Conclusions The Er:YAG laser treatment combined with conventional SRP significantly improved PD and CAL compared to SRP therapy alone; however, these differences were very small and, as a result, the adjunctive effect of Er:YAG laser is likely to be minimal clinically important
