    Production and secretion of collagen-binding proteins from Aeromonas veronii

    Collagen-binding protein (CNBP) synthesized by Aeromonas veronii is located conserved within the subcellular fraction. The results of this study show that 98% of the total CNBP produced by Aer. veronii is present in the extracellular medium, and that the remaining CNBP is distributed either on the cell surface, within the periplasm or anchored on the outer membrane. CNBP is specifically secreted from Aer. veronii into the culture medium, because all the -lactamase activity was located in the cells and could be released by polymixin B extraction of periplasmic proteins. CNBP was produced at growth temperatures from 12 °C to 42 °C, but not at 4 °C. The findings indicate that the level of CNBP in the medium increases during the exponential growth phase and reaches a maximum during the early stationary phase. There was less CNBP production in poor nutrient MMB medium than in the rich LB nutrient medium. CNBP secretion, in contrast to aerolysin secretion, was unaffected by the exeA mutation of Aer. hydrophila. It is concluded that CNBP secretion from Aer. veronii must be achieved by a mechanism different from that reported for aerolysin secretion

    Ultrastructural studies have underpinned the cell biological and clinical investigations of the varied roles of motile cilia in health and disease, with a long history since the 1950s. Recent developments from transmission electron microscopy (TEM; cryo-electron microscopy, electron tomography) have yielded higher resolution and fresh insights into the structure and function of these complex organelles. Microscopy in ciliated organisms, disease models, and in patients with ciliopathy diseases has dramatically expanded our understanding of the ubiquity, multisystem involvement, and importance of cilia in normal human development.     Digital Dilemma 2018

    In October 2018 a one-day conference was held at the UCL Institute of Archaeology focussing on the ‘Digital Dilemma’ in biological archaeology —specifically human remains research where the use of digitisation methods have increased exponentially over the last decade while comparatively little discussion of the ethical and legal considerations of these data has taken place. Papers presented at Digital Dilemma 2018 explored the use of digital data in human remains research, discussing both the benefits provided by these data, areas of ethical or methodological concern and suggestions for future research. This paper and the following conference proceedings will discuss this research demonstrating the importance that this Digital Dilemma in archaeology continues to be discussed and considered in future research

    Orbital Kondo Effect in Cex_xLa1x_{1-x}B6_6: Scaling Analysis

    Peculiarity of the Kondo effect in Cex_xLa1x_{1-x}B6_6 is investigated on the basis of the scaling equations up to third order. For the case where the f1f^1-f2f^2 charge fluctuation enters in addition to the f1f^1-f0f^0 one, the effective exchange interaction becomes anisotropic with respect to the orbital pseudospins which represent the two different orbitals in the Γ8\Gamma_8 ground state. Because of different characteristic energies for electric and magnetic tensors, scaling with the single Kondo temperature does not apply to physical quantities such as the resistivity and magnetic susceptibility. Possibility of a bizzare phase is pointed out where the RKKY interaction leads to the spin ordering without orbital ordering.     Systematic review and meta-analysis of temozolomide in animal models of glioma:was clinical efficacy predicted?

    Background:Malignant glioma is an aggressive tumour commonly associated with a dismal outcome despite optimal surgical and radio-chemotherapy. Since 2005 temozolomide has been established as first-line chemotherapy. We investigate the role of in vivo glioma models in predicting clinical efficacy.Methods:We searched three online databases to systematically identify publications testing temozolomide in animal models of glioma. Median survival and number of animals treated were extracted and quality was assessed using a 12-point scale; random effects meta-analysis was used to estimate efficacy. We analysed the impact of study design and quality and looked for evidence of publication bias.Results:We identified 60 publications using temozolomide in models of glioma, comprising 2443 animals. Temozolomide prolonged survival by a factor of 1.88 (95% CI 1.74-2.03) and reduced tumour volume by 50.4% (41.8-58.9) compared with untreated controls. Study design characteristics accounted for a significant proportion of between-study heterogeneity, and there was evidence of a significant publication bias.Conclusion:These data reflect those from clinical trials in that temozolomide improves survival and reduces tumour volume, even after accounting for publication bias. Experimental in vivo glioma studies of temozolomide differ from those of other glioma therapies in their consistent efficacy and successful translation into clinical medicine

    A system-wide approach to explaining variation in potentially avoidable emergency admissions: national ecological study

    Background Some emergency admissions can be avoided if acute exacerbations of health problems are managed by the range of health services providing emergency and urgent care. Aim To identify system-wide factors explaining variation in age sex adjusted admission rates for conditions rich in avoidable admissions. Design National ecological study. Setting 152 emergency and urgent care systems in England. Methods Hospital Episode Statistics data on emergency admissions were used to calculate an age sex adjusted admission rate for conditions rich in avoidable admissions for each emergency and urgent care system in England for 2008–2011. Results There were 3 273 395 relevant admissions in 2008–2011, accounting for 22% of all emergency admissions. The mean age sex adjusted admission rate was 2258 per year per 100 000 population, with a 3.4-fold variation between systems (1268 and 4359). Factors beyond the control of health services explained the majority of variation: unemployment rates explained 72%, with urban/rural status explaining further variation (R2=75%). Factors related to emergency departments, hospitals, emergency ambulance services and general practice explained further variation (R2=85%): the attendance rate at emergency departments, percentage of emergency department attendances converted to admissions, percentage of emergency admissions staying less than a day, percentage of emergency ambulance calls not transported to hospital and perceived access to general practice within 48 h. Conclusions Interventions to reduce avoidable admissions should be targeted at deprived communities. Better use of emergency departments, ambulance services and primary care could further reduce avoidable emergency admissions

    Crossover between Fermi Liquid and non-Fermi Liquid in Orbitally Degenerate Kondo Systems

    Entanglement of spin and orbital Kondo effect is investigated on the basis of a Kondo-type exchange model with twofold orbital degeneracy. By using Wilson's numerical renormalization-group method, we examine dynamical and thermal properties respecting the difference in time-reversal property of multipole operators. In the presence of particle-hole symmetry, the model has a new non-Fermi-liquid fixed point with a fractional entropy. The spectral intensity of the quadrupole susceptibility diverges in the zero-frequency limit, while the dipole susceptibility shows a Fermi-liquid-like behavior. This is understood by mapping to the two-channel Kondo model, in which the dipole moment is mapped onto the operators with the scaling dimension Δm=1\Delta_m=1, while the quadrupole moment onto the operators with another scaling dimension Δe=1/2\Delta_e=1/2. Even for a fairly particle-hole asymmetric case with the Fermi-liquid ground state, the non-Fermi-liquid behavior has significant influences in electric and thermal properties.Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures, to appear in J.
