Remarkable changes in the near-infrared spectrum of the nova-like variable V4332 Sgr
We report on recent near-IR observations of V4332 Sgr - the nova-like
variable that erupted in 1994. Its rapid, post-outburst evolution to a cool M
type giant/supergiant, soon after its outburst, had showed that it was an
unusual object differing from other eruptive variables like classical/symbiotic
novae or born-again AGB stars. The present study of V4332 Sgr was motivated by
the keen interest in the recent eruption of V838 Mon - which along with V4332
Sgr - is believed to belong to a new class of objects (we propose they may be
called "quasi-novae"). Our observations show new developments in the evolution
of V4332 Sgr. The most striking feature is the detection of several molecular
bands of AlO - a rarely seen molecule in astronomical spectra - in the JHK
spectra. Many of these bands are being detected for the first time. The only
other detection of some of these AlO bands are in V838 Mon, thereby showing
further spectral similarities between the two objects. JHK photometry shows the
development of a new dust shell around V4332 Sgr with a temperature of ~ 900K.
This dust shell does not appear to be associated with ejecta of the 1994
outburst but is due to a second mass-loss episode which is not expected in a
classical nova outburst. The cold molecular environment, suggested by the AlO
emission, is also not expected in novae ejecta. We model the AlO bands and also

The Ser/Thr Phosphatase PP2A Regulatory Subunit Widerborst Inhibits Notch Signaling
Drosophila Enhancer of split M8, an effector of Notch signaling, is regulated by protein kinase CK2. The phosphatase PP2A is thought to play an opposing (inhibitory) role, but the identity of the regulatory subunit was unknown. The studies described here reveal a role for the PP2A regulatory subunit widerborst (wdb) in three developmental contexts; the bristle, wing and the R8 photoreceptors of the eye. wdb overexpression elicits bristle and wing defects akin to reduced Notch signaling, whereas hypomorphic mutations in this PP2A subunit elicit opposite effects. We have also evaluated wdb functions using mutations in Notch and E(spl) that affect the eye. We find that the eye and R8 defects of the well-known Nspl mutation are enhanced by a hypomorphic allele of wdb, whereas they are strongly rescued by wdb overexpression. Similarly, ectopic wdb rescues the eye and R8 defects of the E(spl)D mutation, which affects the m8 gene. In addition, wdb overexpression also rescues the bristle defects of ectopically expressed M8, or the eye and R8 defects of its CK2 phosphomimetic variant M8-S159D. The latter finding suggests that PP2A may target M8 at highly conserved residues in the vicinity of the CK2 site, whose phosphorylation controls repression of Atonal and the R8 fate. Together, the studies identify PP2A-Wdb as a participant in Notch signaling, and suggest that M8 activity is controlled by phosphorylation and dephosphorylation. The conservation of the phosphorylation sites between Drosophila E(spl) and the HES/HER proteins from mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds and fish raises the prospect that this mode of regulation is widespread
Path Integral Approach to Residual Gauge Fixing
In this paper we study the question of residual gauge fixing in the path
integral approach for a general class of axial-type gauges including the
light-cone gauge. We show that the two cases -- axial-type gauges and the
light-cone gauge -- lead to very different structures for the explicit forms of
the propagator. In the case of the axial-type gauges, fixing the residual
symmetry determines the propagator of the theory completely. On the other hand,
in the light-cone gauge there is still a prescription dependence even after
fixing the residual gauge symmetry, which is related to the existence of an

Effect of Lutein in the expression of PPARα and LDLR in hypercholesterolemic male Wistar Rats
Background: Hyperlipidemia is a well known risk factor for cardiovascular disease, especially atherosclerotic coronary artery disease. Peroxisome proliferator activated receptor α (PPARα), a member of this nuclear receptor family, has emerged as an important player in this scenario, with evidence supporting a central co-ordinated role in the regulation of fatty acid oxidation, lipid and lipoprotein metabolism and inflammatory and vascular responses, all of which would be predicted to reduce atherosclerotic risk. The low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor (LDLR) is the primary pathway for removal of cholesterol from the circulation, and its activity is meticulously governed by intracellular cholesterol levels. Hence in this study we investigated the effect of Lutein on PPARα and LDLR expression in liver of wistar rats.Methods: Male Wistar rats were divided into 6 groups of 6 each. Group I served as control. Group II III, IV, V and VI rats were received high cholesterol diet. Group III was treated with Atorvastatin 5mg/kg. Group IV, V and VI rats were treated with 25mg/kg, 50mg/kg and 100mg/kg of Lutein. After 16 weeks, liver tissue samples were collected from all the groups of animals to evaluate the expression of PPARα and LDLR.Results: The expression of Peroxisome proliferator activated receptor α and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor (LDLR) was significantly increased in Lutein treated hypercholesterolemic male wistar rats.Conclusions: The results of this study indicate that Lutein activates LDL receptor and PPARα in hypercholesterolemic male wistar rats
An evolved disk surrounding the massive main sequence star MWC 297?
We present the results of the interferometric observations of the
circumstellar disk surrounding MWC 297 in the continuum at 230 GHz (1.3 mm) and
in the (J=2-1) rotational transitions of CO,CO and CO
using the Submillimeter Array. At a distance of 250 pc, MWC 297 is one of the
closest, young massive stars (M 10 M) to us. Compact
continuum emission is detected towards MWC 297 from which we estimate a disk
mass (gas+dust) of 0.07 M and a disk radius of 80 AU. Our
result demonstrates that circumstellar disks can survive around massive stars
well into their main sequence phase even after they have become optically
visible. Complementing our observations with the data compiled from the
literature, we find the submm dust opacity index to be between 0.1 and
0.3. If the emission is optically thin, the low value of indicates the
presence of relatively large grains in the disk, possibly because of grain
growth. We do not detect any CO emission associated with the continuum source.
We argue that the CO emission from the disk is likely optically thin, in
which case, we derive an upper limit to the gas mass which implies significant
depletion of molecular gas in the disk. The mass of this disk and the
evolutionary trends observed are similar to those found for intermediate mass
Herbig Ae stars and low mass T Tauri stars.Comment: 4 pages, 3 Figures, accepted for publication in ApJ
V838 Monocerotis: the central star and its environment a decade after outburst
Aims. V838 Monocerotis erupted in 2002, brightened in a series of outbursts,
and eventually developed a spectacular light echo. A very red star emerged a
few months after the outburst. The whole event has been interpreted as the
result of a merger. Methods. We obtained near-IR and mid-IR interferometric
observations of V838 Mon with the AMBER and MIDI recombiners located at the
Very Large Telescope Interferometer (VLTI) array. The MIDI two-beam
observations were obtained with the 8m Unit Telescopes between October 2011 and
February 2012. The AMBER three-beam observations were obtained with the compact
array (Bm) in April 2013 and the long array (B140m) in May 2014,
using the 1.8m Auxiliary Telescopes. Results. A significant new result is the
detection of a compact structure around V838 Mon, as seen from MIDI data. The
extension of the structure increases from a FWHM of 25 mas at 8 {\mu}m to 70
mas at 13 {\mu}m. At the adopted distance of D = 6.1 0.6 kpc, the dust is
distributed from about 150 to 400 AU around V838 Mon. The MIDI visibilities
reveal a flattened structure whose aspect ratio increases with wavelength. The
major axis is roughly oriented around a position angle of -10 degrees, which
aligns with previous polarimetric studies reported in the literature. This
flattening can be interpreted as a relic of the 2002 eruption or by the
influence of the currently embedded B3V companion. The AMBER data provide a new
diameter for the pseudo-photosphere, which shows that its diameter has
decreased by about 40% in 10yrs, reaching a radius R = 750 200
R (3.5 1.0 AU). Conclusions. After the 2002 eruption,
interpreted as the merging of two stars, it seems that the resulting source is
relaxing to a normal state. The nearby environment exhibits an equatorial

The Topological Cigar Observables
We study the topologically twisted cigar, namely the SL(2,R)/U(1)
superconformal field theory at arbitrary level, and find the BRST cohomology of
the topologically twisted N=2 theory. We find a one to one correspondence
between the spectrum of the twisted coset and singular vectors in the Wakimoto
modules constructed over the SL(2,R) current algebra. The topological cigar
cohomology is the crucial ingredient in calculating the closed string spectrum
of topological strings on non-compact Gepner models.Comment: 28 page
DEVELOPMENT AND VALIDATION OF A RP-HPLC METHOD FOR ESTIMATION OF TELMISARTAN IN HUMAN PLASMA
Objective: The present study was aimed to develop a rapid, specific and sensitive method based on high performance liquid chromatographic method was developed for the determination of telmisartan using indapamide as an internal standard.Methods: The utilization of single step protein precipitation method using methanol as a precipitating agent becomes suitable for analysis of a large number of samples. The developed method was validated as per US-FDA guidelines for telmisartan in human plasma.Result: An isocratic separation was achieved using Hibar C18 (250 x 4.6 mm, 5 μm) column using 10 mmol ammonium formate solution (pH 4.0)–methanol (70:30, v/v) as the mobile phase. Detection was carried out at 275 nm. The method was validated over the range of 0.1–1.5 µg/ml in human plasma with a regression analysis of 0.996. The percentage recovery of the present method was found to be 94.0–99.2 %.Conclusion: The developed analytical method was found to be rapid, single step, plasma preparation coupled with the simple high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with UV detection (HPLC–UV) isocratic chromatographic apparatus makes the method cost-effective and suitable for analysis of a large number of samples
Lactobacillus fermentum (PCC®) supplementation and gastrointestinal and respiratory-tract illness symptoms: a randomised control trial in athletes
BACKGROUND Probiotics purportedly reduce symptoms of gastrointestinal and upper respiratory-tract illness by modulating commensal microflora. Preventing and reducing symptoms of respiratory and gastrointestinal illness are the primary reason that dietary supplementation with probiotics are becoming increasingly popular with healthy active individuals. There is a paucity of data regarding the effectiveness of probiotics in this cohort. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a probiotic on faecal microbiology, self-reported illness symptoms and immunity in healthy well trained individuals. METHODS Competitive cyclists (64 males and 35 females; age 35 ± 9 and 36 ± 9 y, VO2max 56 ± 6 and 52 ± 6 ml.kg-1.min-1, mean ± SD) were randomised to either probiotic (minimum 1 × 109 Lactobacillus fermentum (PCC®) per day) or placebo treatment for 11 weeks in a double-blind, randomised, controlled trial. The outcome measures were faecal L. fermentum counts, self-reported symptoms of illness and serum cytokines. RESULTS Lactobacillus numbers increased 7.7-fold (90% confidence limits 2.1- to 28-fold) more in males on the probiotic, while there was an unclear 2.2-fold (0.2- to 18-fold) increase in females taking the probiotic. The number and duration of mild gastrointestinal symptoms were ~2-fold greater in the probiotic group. However, there was a substantial 0.7 (0.2 to 1.2) of a scale step reduction in the severity of gastrointestinal illness at the mean training load in males, which became more pronounced as training load increased. The load (duration×severity) of lower respiratory illness symptoms was less by a factor of 0.31 (99%CI; 0.07 to 0.96) in males taking the probiotic compared with placebo but increased by a factor of 2.2 (0.41 to 27) in females. Differences in use of cold and flu medication mirrored these symptoms. The observed effects on URTI had too much uncertainty for a decisive outcome. There were clear reductions in the magnitude of acute exercise-induced changes in some cytokines. CONCLUSION L. fermentum may be a useful nutritional adjunct for healthy exercising males. However, uncertainty in the effects of supplementation on URTI and on symptoms in females needs to be resolved.
