Multifractal detrended cross-correlation analysis for two nonstationary signals
It is ubiquitous in natural and social sciences that two variables, recorded
temporally or spatially in a complex system, are cross-correlated and possess
multifractal features. We propose a new method called multifractal detrended
cross-correlation analysis (MF-DXA) to investigate the multifractal behaviors
in the power-law cross-correlations between two records in one or higher
dimensions. The method is validated with cross-correlated 1D and 2D binomial
measures and multifractal random walks. Application to two financial time
series is also illustrated.Comment: 4 RevTex pages including 6 eps figure
Optimization of Dimples in Microchannel Heat Sink with Impinging Jets—Part B: the Influences of Dimple Height and Arrangement
The combination of a microchannel heat sink with impinging jets and dimples (MHSIJD) can effectively improve the flow and heat transfer performance on the cooling surface of electronic devices with very high heat fluxes. Based on the previous work by analysing the effect of dimple radius on the overall performance of MHSIJD, the effects of dimple height and arrangement were numerically analysed. The velocity distribution, pressure drop, and thermal performance of MHSIJD under various dimple heights and arrangements were presented. The results showed that: MHSIJD with higher dimples had better overall performance with dimple radius being fixed; creating a mismatch between the impinging hole and dimple can solve the issue caused by the drift phenomenon; the mismatch between the impinging hole and dimple did not exhibit better overall performance than a well-matched design

China's energy consumption in the building sector: A Statistical Yearbook-Energy Balance Sheet based splitting method
China's energy consumption in the building sector (BEC) is not counted as a separate type of energy consumption, but divided and mixed in other sectors in China's statistical system. This led to the lack of historical data on China's BEC. Moreover, previous researches' shortages such as unsystematic research on BEC, various estimation methods with complex calculation process, and difficulties in data acquisition resulted in “heterogeneous” of current BEC in China. Aiming to these deficiencies, this study proposes a set of China building energy consumption calculation method (CBECM) by splitting out the building related energy consumption mixed in other sectors in the composition of China Statistical Yearbook-Energy Balance Sheet. Then, China's BEC from 2000 to 2014 are estimated using CBECM and compared with other studies. Results show that, from 2000 to 2014, China's BEC increased 1.7 times, rising from 301 to 814 million tons of standard coal consumed, with the BEC percentage of total energy consumption stayed relatively stable between 17.7% and 20.3%. By comparison, we find that our results are reliable and the CBECM has the following advantages over other methods: data source is authoritative, calculation process is concise, and it is easy to obtain time series data on BEC etc. The CBECM is particularly suitable for the provincial government to calculate the local BEC, even in the circumstance with statistical yearbook available only

Customized design of hearing aids using statistical shape learning
3D shape modeling is a crucial component of rapid prototyping systems
that customize shapes of implants and prosthetic devices to a patient’s
anatomy. In this paper, we present a solution to the problem of customized 3D
shape modeling using a statistical shape analysis framework. We design a novel
method to learn the relationship between two classes of shapes, which are related
by certain operations or transformation. The two associated shape classes are
represented in a lower dimensional manifold, and the reduced set of parameters
obtained in this subspace is utilized in an estimation, which is exemplified by a
multivariate regression in this paper. We demonstrate our method with a felicitous
application to estimation of customized hearing aid devices
Strain-stress study of AlxGa1-xN/AlN heterostructures on c-plane sapphire and related optical properties
This work presents a systematic study of stress and strain of AlxGa1-xN/AlN
with composition ranging from GaN to AlN, grown on a c-plane sapphire by
metal-organic chemical vapor deposition, using synchrotron radiation
high-resolution X-ray diffraction and reciprocal space mapping. The c-plane of
the AlxGa1-xN epitaxial layers exhibits compressive strain, while the a-plane
exhibits tensile strain. The biaxial stress and strain are found to increase
with increasing Al composition, although the lattice mismatch between the
AlxGa1-xN and the buffer layer AlN gets smaller. A reduction in the lateral
coherence lengths and an increase in the edge and screw dislocations are seen
as the AlxGa1-xN composition is varied from GaN to AlN, exhibiting a clear
dependence of the crystal properties of AlxGa1-xN on the Al content. The
bandgap of the epitaxial layers is slightly lower than predicted value due to a
larger tensile strain effect on the a-axis compared to the compressive strain
on the c-axis. Raman characteristics of the AlxGa1-xN samples exhibit a shift
in the phonon peaks with the Al composition. The effect of strain is also
discussed on the optical phonon energies of the epitaxial layers. The
techniques discussed here can be used to study other similar materials.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, 2 table
Coupling Of The B1g Phonon To The Anti-Nodal Electronic States of Bi2Sr2Ca0.92Y0.08Cu2O(8+delta)
Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on optimally doped
Bi2Sr2Ca0.92Y0.08Cu2O(8+delta) uncovers a coupling of the electronic bands to a
40 meV mode in an extended k-space region away from the nodal direction,
leading to a new interpretation of the strong renormalization of the electronic
structure seen in Bi2212. Phenomenological agreements with neutron and Raman
experiments suggest that this mode is the B1g oxygen bond-buckling phonon. A
theoretical calculation based on this assignment reproduces the electronic
renormalization seen in the data.Comment: 4 Pages, 4 Figures Updated Figures and Tex
