    What are the Attitudes and Opinions of School Personnel in Reference to the School Breakfast and Lunch Programs in Elementary Schools?

    The purpose of this study was to determine perceptions of some school personnel regarding the Breakfast and Lunch Programs in their elementary schools. Also, the purpose of investigating the perceptions of current school personnel was to determine if the findings concur with existing research. The findings of this study were compared to previous research data, which focuses on the school personnel comments regarding their perceptions of what is considered a quality School Breakfast and Lunch Program in their elementary school. This study includes a research-designed questionnaire, which was administered to 67 voluntary participants in a city school district in western New York. The respondents in this study were asked to complete the questionnaire by choosing the responses that best reflect their perceptions about the statements provided. Responses ranged from agree to disagree . Additional space for comments was provided. The findings in this study indicate that some school personnel seem to have a good concept of what constitutes a quality School Breakfast and Lunch Program. In analyzing the data from the questionnaires in this study, 93% of the nurses agreed that the school breakfast and lunches served in their elementary school are healthy sources of nutrition for students. Another interesting analysis is that a 21% difference in agreement was calculated among nurses and teachers regarding poor nourishment being a problem in their school (Nurses 53% and Teachers 74%). Therefore, though many school personnel seem to understand what constitutes a good School Breakfast and Lunch Program they recognize that their school does not fully meet the nutritional standards

    Prevalence of Hypoglycemia Induced by Overtreatment in Elderly Type Two Diabetics Using Continuous Blood Glucose Monitors

    Background: The most common way of reading blood glucose (BG) levels in type II diabetics is by manually pricking one’s finger with a needle and measuring the glucose through a monitoring device. There has been an increased use in continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) that permits clients to wear a sensor on their arm that simultaneously records glucose levels throughout the day and reports the results to a smartphone or monitoring device. Depending on the result and whether the patient is using insulin, it will determine how much medication will be administered. There is little research on the impacts of using CGM devices in conjunction with antihyperglycemic drugs in type II diabetics who live independently and are over age 65. Objective: To examine devices that monitor BG continuously compared to devices that monitor BG with periodic finger sticks. The question arises: Are elderly patients with type II Diabetes who live independently and use these devices, disproportionately affected by hypoglycemic episodes induced by over-treatment with anti-diabetic drugs? Literature Review: Research highlighted benefits of using CGM devices versus self-monitoring BG such as recording glucose levels at night, increased self-care behavior, and decreased hemoglobin A1C. Other factors may contribute to hypoglycemia such as physical exercise, prolonged fasting, and use of ACE inhibitors. There remains a knowledge gap in the impact that CGM devices have on independent type II diabetics who live independently.     Performance management is important for an organization. In a top-down perspective, it emphasizes the strategic alignment of the agency\u27s thrusts with the day-to-day operation. Also, from a bottom-up approach, it aligns and optimizes individual performance with the common goal of the group. This paper examined the extent of school heads’ implementation of the Results-based Performance Management System (RPMS) as performance management mechanism in the Department of Education (DepEd). It focused on the 61 school heads and 271 teaching personnel of Bayawan City Division, Negros Oriental, Philippines for SY 2018-2019. It utilized the descriptive, comparative, and correlational methods of research in the sense that the extent of school heads’ implementation of goal setting, monitoring and feedbacking practices was surveyed and the results were related to teachers’ job performance. The extent of implementation of the RPMS was measured in terms of the following phases: a) planning and commitment, b) monitoring and coaching, c) review and evaluation, and d) rewards and developmental planning. The study used a researcher-made questionnaire divided into three parts, namely: 1) profile of the respondents, 2) extent of implementation of the RPMS, and 3) job performance of the teachers. The study revealed that there is a very great extent of goal setting, monitoring and feedbacking practices as respectively assessed by both the school heads and teachers in all RPMS areas: a) planning and commitment (wx̄=4.49 and wx̄=4.47), b) monitoring and coaching (wx̄=4.43 and wx̄=4.44), c) review and evaluation (wx̄=4.43 and wx̄=4.47), and d) rewards and developmental planning (wx̄=4.38 and wx̄=4.45). There were also significant difference shown in the extent of school heads’ performance management mechanisms and teachers’ job performance when the former and the latter are grouped according to their profile items as to length of experience, educational attainment and position held. It concluded that there is a strong and significant relationship between the extent of performance management mechanisms and teachers’ job performance as all the values of rs fall in the “strong relationship” category. In addition, all computed p-values are less than the level of significance (0.05)

    β-N-methylamino-L-alanine Enhances Neurotoxicity Through Multiple Mechanisms

    The idea that the environmental toxin β-N-methylamino-l-alanine (BMAA) is involved in neurodegenerative diseases on Guam has risen and fallen over the years. The theory has gained greater interest with recent reports that BMAA is biomagnified, is widely distributed around the planet, and is present in the brains of Alzheimer\u27s patients in Canada. We provide two important new findings. First, we show that BMAA at concentrations as low as 10 μM can potentiate neuronal injury induced by other insults. This is the first evidence that BMAA at concentrations below the mM range can enhance death of cortical neurons and illustrates potential synergistic effects of environmental toxins with underlying neurological conditions. Second, we show that the mechanism of BMAA toxicity is threefold: it is an agonist for NMDA and mGluR5 receptors, and induces oxidative stress. The results provide further support for the hypothesis that BMAA plays a role in neurodegenerative diseases

    Invisible Article III Delinquency: History, Mystery, and Concerns About “Federal Juvenile Courts”

    This essay is the second in a two-part series focused on our nation’s invisible juvenile justice system—one that operates under the legal radar as part of the U.S. Constitution’s Article III federal district court system. The first publication, Article III Adultification of Kids: History, Mystery, and Troubling Implications of Federal Youth Transfers, examined the little-known practice of prosecuting children as adults in federal courts. This paper will look at the related phenomenon of juvenile delinquency matters that are filed and pursued in our nation’s federal court system. To date, most scholarship evaluating youth prosecution has focused on our country’s juvenile courts—venues established and run in each of the individual states and territories. The anomaly of child prosecution under federal laws in our nation’s Article III courts has received far less attention—particularly over the last two decades. However, recent events suggest—and policies of the current presidential administration demonstrate—federal apprehension and prosecution of youth is a subject worthy of greater study

    Toward iconic-based information technology and application control exception messages: Working paper series--07-09

    Users of information technology (IT) commonly encounter exception messages during their interactions with application programs. Exception messages are an important element in accounting application controls which address exposures within specific computer application programs such as payroll, sales processing, and cash disbursements. Exception messages are similar in purpose to the warning messages that appear on consumer products and equipment (e.g., cigarettes, power tools, etc.), in various work environments (e.g., around machinery), and on chemicals. This manuscript reviews the normative elements and information that are included in product, chemical, and environment warnings and proposes that these elements and information should also be included in IT and application control exception messages. It is argued that including these elements will increase the effectiveness, informativeness, and consistency of exception messages. Additionally, we report the results of an experiment carried out to determine if IT and application control exception messages designed to conform to the normative elements, by specifically including descriptive icons, improves user interactions. The results of the experiment confirm that user's behavioral compliance increases when interacting with a system that incorporates iconic-based exception messages

    The effect of qualitative expressions of magnitude in the letter to shareholders on investors' perceptions of earnings performance: Working paper series--03-18

    Annual reports issued by publicly traded firms are important documents for communicating the financial performance of a company. In addition to the financial statements, annual reports contain non-numerical information (i.e., written expressions). The letter to shareholders is typically the first non-numerical item representing management's communication that a reader comes to in an annual report. The primary content of the letter to shareholders is a series of written expressions used to describe the company's financial situation. We report how readers' perceptions are influenced by one type of written expression often found in the letter to shareholders: Qualitative expressions of magnitude (e.g., "minimal," "moderate" or "sizable") used to describe the results of operations. Top management (e.g., presidents) very often uses qualitative expressions of magnitude in the letter to shareholders to describe the quantitative financial performance of the company found in the accompanying financial statements. Holding the actual percentage change in corporate earnings and other contextual factors constant, we find that the type of expression used in the letter to shareholders does influence readers' perception of financial performance reported in the financial statements. In addition, we find evidence that less sophisticated investors are influenced more by the use of qualitative expressions of magnitude

Also reported are the results of an investigation of a sample of exception messages to determine their degree of compliance with the proposed elements. Results indicate that, relative to normative prescriptions established in the literature on warnings, IT exception messages lack descriptive content

    Level of Science Achievement: Basis for the Production of Strategic Intervention Materials (SIMs)

    This research used the descriptive method to determine the level of Science Achievement of Grade VI Pupils: Basis for Production of Strategic Intervention Materials in Bayawan City East Central School, Bayawan City Division during the SY 2019-2020. The quantitative data were gathered from 134 pupils of Bayawan City East Central School, Bayawan City Division during the SY 2019-2020. Also, the researcher conducted a survey questionnaire. Descriptive method was used in this study. The statistical tools used in the analysis of the data were percentage, frequency, mean, weighted mean, and z-test. The study found out that the level of Science Achievement of Grade VI Learners of the Least Learned Organ Systems in terms of the Circulatory System, Respiratory System, and Excretory System were at low mastery level while for the Nervous System, the learners were moving towards mastery stage. Based on the given findings, it served as a basis for the production of Strategic Intervention Materials (SIM) in the different Least Learned Organ Systems namely Circulatory System, Respiratory System, Nervous System, and Excretory System in order to increase the level of learners’ achievement in Science subject

    Looking at the Perceived Benefits of Feeding Program in the Eyes of the Stakeholders

    The study focused on the effects of school-based feeding program in the eyes of the stakeholders conducted on March 2019 to grades 1 to 6 beneficiary pupils, selected teachers, SBFP In-Charge and School Head of Mansagomayon Elementary School, District 4 of Sta. Catalina, Division of Negros Oriental. A descriptive design was used in this study whichd eemed appropriate in the context of this study since the researcher will describe the effectiveness of the SBFP as employed in the research locale. Additionally, Key informant interview with the selected representatives of the identified groups of stakeholders was conducted to provide qualitative support to the claims of the study. Since this study used the KII as the principal mode of data gathering among the participants, a semi structure interview guide was used. The said interview shall be composed of 7-10 questions that were patterned to achieve the objectives of this research conduct. However, the researcher has the leeway to ask a follow up questions given the goal of the research is not yet clarified to the respondents. Meanwhile, the secondary data such as the baseline and endline data of the respondents’ nutritional status were taken from the Nutrition Coordinator of the school. Mean and t-test was used to analyze the data. Results revealed that the nutritional status of the pupils were below normal despite of the efforts in giving supplement and dietary assistance of the school through the conduct of feeding program hence the very purpose of the program in providing complete meals and enhancing the nutrition of these pupils were not thoroughly achieved. The mean of pupils’ baseline and end line data shows a highly significant difference on the baseline and endline data results for the pupils’ BMI with a P-value of 0.000 and t-value of - 3.570.This implies that the results of the BMI of the pupil beneficiaries differ significantly before and after the 120 days feeding program. This means that there was a change and movement in the nutritional status of the pupils as the program was implemented
