    On the structure of non-full-rank perfect codes

    The Krotov combining construction of perfect 1-error-correcting binary codes from 2000 and a theorem of Heden saying that every non-full-rank perfect 1-error-correcting binary code can be constructed by this combining construction is generalized to the qq-ary case. Simply, every non-full-rank perfect code CC is the union of a well-defined family of ÎŒ\mu-components KÎŒK_\mu, where ÎŒ\mu belongs to an "outer" perfect code C∗C^*, and these components are at distance three from each other. Components from distinct codes can thus freely be combined to obtain new perfect codes. The Phelps general product construction of perfect binary code from 1984 is generalized to obtain ÎŒ\mu-components, and new lower bounds on the number of perfect 1-error-correcting qq-ary codes are presented.Comment: 8 page

    Structural characterization of a first-generation articulated-truss joint for space crane application

    A first-generation space crane articulated-truss joint was statically and dynamically characterized in a configuration that approximated an operational environment. The articulated-truss joint was integrated into a test-bed for structural characterization. Static characterization was performed by applying known loads and measuring the corresponding deflections to obtain load-deflection curves. Dynamic characterization was performed using modal testing to experimentally determine the first six mode shapes, frequencies, and modal damping values. Static and dynamic characteristics were also determined for a reference truss that served as a characterization baseline. Load-deflection curves and experimental frequency response functions are presented for the reference truss and the articulated-truss joint mounted in the test-bed. The static and dynamic experimental results are compared with analytical predictions obtained from finite element analyses. Load-deflection response is also presented for one of the linear actuators used in the articulated-truss joint. Finally, an assessment is presented for the predictability of the truss hardware used in the reference truss and articulated-truss joint based upon hardware stiffness properties that were previously obtained during the Precision Segmented Reflector (PSR) Technology Development Program

    Beef color is a major attribute consumers utilize to make purchasing decisions. It is estimated poor color shelf-life of beef steaks costs the meat industry more than $1 billion annually. Shelf-life color is influenced by a balance of two biochemical processes within steaks: metmyoglobin reducing ability and oxygen consumption. Steaks that exhibit a greater metmyoglobin reducing and a reduced oxygen consumption are typically characterized as more color stable. Characteristics of the muscle fiber or muscle cell are what determine the properties of a steak. Commonly, muscles with more oxidative fibers have an elevated oxygen consumption and reduced metmyoglobin reducing ability. The Semitendinosus muscle or eye of round possesses a divergent muscle fiber isoform distribution based on the location steaks are fabricated.     A regulating dc-to-dc converter is described which utilizes a new circuit configuration to achieve several desirable features including higher efficiency, a single circuit for regulation and conversion, minimized output filter requirements, and simplified control system applications. The dc operating characteristics are derived and the efficiency of the new converter is shown to compare favorably with the conventional boost regulator. An ac model is derived and a comparison is made between analytical and experimental results

    Algebraic lattice constellations: bounds on performance

    In this work, we give a bound on performance of any full-diversity lattice constellation constructed from algebraic number fields. We show that most of the already available constructions are almost optimal in the sense that any further improvement of the minimum product distance would lead to a negligible coding gain. Furthermore, we discuss constructions, minimum product distance, and bounds for full-diversity complex rotated Z[i]/sup n/-lattices for any dimension n, which avoid the need of component interleaving

    On the form of growing strings

    Patterns and forms adopted by Nature, such as the shape of living cells, the geometry of shells and the branched structure of plants, are often the result of simple dynamical paradigms. Here we show that a growing self-interacting string attached to a tracking origin, modeled to resemble nascent polypeptides in vivo, develops helical structures which are more pronounced at the growing end. We also show that the dynamic growth ensemble shares several features of an equilibrium ensemble in which the growing end of the polymer is under an effective stretching force. A statistical analysis of native states of proteins shows that the signature of this non-equilibrium phenomenon has been fixed by evolution at the C-terminus, the growing end of a nascent protein. These findings suggest that a generic non-equilibrium growth process might have provided an additional evolutionary advantage for nascent proteins by favoring the preferential selection of helical structures.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures.     Walks of molecular motors in two and three dimensions

    Molecular motors interacting with cytoskeletal filaments undergo peculiar random walks consisting of alternating sequences of directed movements along the filaments and diffusive motion in the surrounding solution. An ensemble of motors is studied which interacts with a single filament in two and three dimensions. The time evolution of the probability distribution for the bound and unbound motors is determined analytically. The diffusion of the motors is strongly enhanced parallel to the filament.
