Stochastic oscillations of adaptive networks: application to epidemic modelling
Adaptive-network models are typically studied using deterministic
differential equations which approximately describe their dynamics. In
simulations, however, the discrete nature of the network gives rise to
intrinsic noise which can radically alter the system's behaviour. In this
article we develop a method to predict the effects of stochasticity in adaptive
networks by making use of a pair-based proxy model. The technique is developed
in the context of an epidemiological model of a disease spreading over an
adaptive network of infectious contact. Our analysis reveals that in this model
the structure of the network exhibits stochastic oscillations in response to
fluctuations in the disease dynamic.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure

Sequential Decision Making with Untrustworthy Service Providers
In this paper, we deal with the sequential decision making problem of agents operating in computational economies, where there is uncertainty regarding the trustworthiness of service providers populating the environment. Specifically, we propose a generic Bayesian trust model, and formulate the optimal Bayesian solution to the exploration-exploitation problem facing the agents when repeatedly interacting with others in such environments. We then present a computationally tractable Bayesian reinforcement learning algorithm to approximate that solution by taking into account the expected value of perfect information of an agent's actions. Our algorithm is shown to dramatically outperform all previous finalists of the international Agent Reputation and Trust (ART) competition, including the winner from both years the competition has been run
Forestland type identification and analysis in Western Massachussetts: A linkage of a LANDSAT forest inventory to an optimization study
Digital land cover files derived from computer processing of LANDSAT and soil productivity data were linked and used by linear programming model to determine production of forested areas under different management strategies. Results of model include maps and data graphics for four-county region in Western Massachusetts

Muon Ionisation Cooling in Reduced RF
In Muon Ionisation Cooling, closely packed high-field RF cavities are interspersed with energy-absorbing material in order to reduce particle beam emittance. Transverse focussing of the muon beams is achieved by superconducting magnets. This results in the RF cavities sitting in intense magnetic fields. Recent studies have shown that this may limit the peak gradient that can be achieved in the RF cavities. In this paper, we study the effect that a reduced RF gradient may have on the cooling performance of the Neutrino Factory lattice and examine methods to mitigate the effect
Understanding the social in a digital age
Datafication, algorithms, social media and their various assemblages enable massive connective processes, enriching personal interaction and amplifying the scope and scale of public networks. At the same time, surveillance capitalists and the social quantification sector are committed to monetizing every aspect of human communication, all of which threaten ideal social qualities, such as togetherness and connection. This Special Issue brings together a range of voices and provocations around ‘the social’, all of which aim to critically interrogate mediated human connection and their contingent socialities. Conventional methods may no longer be adequate, and we must rethink not only the fabric of the social but the very tools we use to make sense of our changing social formations. This Special Issue raises shared concerns with what the social means today, unpicking and rethinking the seams between digitization and social life that characterize today’s digital age
Building Booster Separation Aerodynamic Databases for Artemis II
NASAs Artemis II mission will mark the return of humans to near-lunar space for the first time since Apollo. Shortly after launch on the Space Launch System (SLS), a critical phase of ascent occurs when 16 small rockets fire to push the boosters away from the core. Minimizing the risk of failure during separation requires the construction of multiple 13-dimensional databases, including perturbations in position, flight conditions, and engine thrust. The SLS Computational Fluid Dynamics team used NASAs FUN3D flow solver on the Pleiades and Electra supercomputers to run 5,780 simulations at nominal conditions and over 8,000 simulations with a core stage engine failure to generate the databases needed to verify the booster separation system for Artemis II
Spectra of Modular and Small-World Matrices
We compute spectra of symmetric random matrices describing graphs with
general modular structure and arbitrary inter- and intra-module degree
distributions, subject only to the constraint of finite mean connectivities. We
also evaluate spectra of a certain class of small-world matrices generated from
random graphs by introducing short-cuts via additional random connectivity
components. Both adjacency matrices and the associated graph Laplacians are
investigated. For the Laplacians, we find Lifshitz type singular behaviour of
the spectral density in a localised region of small values. In the
case of modular networks, we can identify contributions local densities of
state from individual modules. For small-world networks, we find that the
introduction of short cuts can lead to the creation of satellite bands outside
the central band of extended states, exhibiting only localised states in the
band-gaps. Results for the ensemble in the thermodynamic limit are in excellent
agreement with those obtained via a cavity approach for large finite single
instances, and with direct diagonalisation results.Comment: 18 pages, 5 figure
