Coal feed component testing for CDIF
Investigations conducted during the conceptual design of the Montana MHD Component Development and Integration Facility (CDIF) identified commercially available processing and feeding equipment potentially suitable for use in a reference design. Tests on sub-scale units of this equipment indicated that they would perform as intended
A New Component in the Radio Continua of PNe
A byproduct of experiments designed to map the CMB is the recent detection of a new component of foreground galactic emission. The anomalous foreground at 10–30 GHz, unexplained by traditional emission mechanisms, correlates with 100 mum dust emission, and is thus presumably due to dust.Is the anomalous foreground ubiquitous in the Galaxy? I will present evidence obtained with the CBI and SIMBA+SEST supporting the existence of the new component in the ISM at large, and in specific objects, in the form of a 31 GHz excess over free-free emission in PNe

Giant Pulsar Glitches and the Inertia of Neutron-Star Crusts
Giant pulsar frequency glitches as detected in the emblematic Vela pulsar
have long been thought to be the manifestation of a neutron superfluid
permeating the inner crust of a neutron star. However, this superfluid has been
recently found to be entrained by the crust, and as a consequence it does not
carry enough angular momentum to explain giant glitches. The extent to which
pulsar-timing observations can be reconciled with the standard vortex-mediated
glitch theory is studied considering the current uncertainties on dense-matter
properties. To this end, the crustal moment of inertia of glitching pulsars is
calculated employing a series of different unified dense-matter equations of

The Influence of Biological Sex, Previous Experience, and Preparation Time on Classroom Public Speaking Grades
How does biological sex affect public speaking grades? Students completed journal entries over the course of the semester. Hierarchical multiple regression incrementally examined competency measures (previous experience and overall preparation time) then biological sex on public speaking grade averages. Competency measures predicted higher speech grade averages, but women still earned higher speech grades even after the effects of competency had been removed. Among the explanations offered are that women may be more competent than men, a combination of competence and compliance explains women’s higher grades, or public speaking classrooms perpetuate a female competency bias
