    Non-Adiabatic Energy Surfaces of the B+H\u3csub\u3e2\u3c/sub\u3e Systems

    In order to solve the dynamics of a system, the kinetic energy operator of the Hamiltonian must be diagonalized. Diagonalization requires rotation of the system into a non-adiabatic representation. This rotation is a coupling angle determined by the derivative coupling terms. Derivative coupling terms are calculated using Columbus and Brooklyn, software packages. Separation of internal dynamics characterized by Jacobi coordinates, and external dynamics characterized by a set of Euler angles and the center of mass position, requires a transformation from Cartesian coordinates to Jacobi coordinates required for subsequent dynamical calculations. Previous attempts to solve for non-adiabatic energy surfaces in this manner have failed because of an ambiguity in selecting the correct variable for describing the overall rotation of the B+H2 system, giving answers that do not agree with theory. This error, which lies within the method of converting from one coordinate system to another, is discovered and corrected. By way of this correction, correct coupling angles are calculated, and non-adiabatic energy surfaces are calculated

    Massive Open Online Courses are an exciting new avenue for instruction and research, yet they are full of unknowns. In the Spring of 2013, MITx released its first introductory physics MOOC through the edX platform, generating a total enrollment of 43,000 students from around the world. We describe the population of participants in terms of their age, gender, level of education, and country of origin, highlighting both the diversity of 8.02x enrollees as well as gender gap and retention. Using three midterm exams and the final as waypoints, we highlight performance by different demographic subpopulations and their retention rates.     Reshaping Counselor Education: The Identification of Influential Factors on Multisystemic Therapy

    Multisystemic therapy (MST) is a form of behavioral health treatment for adolescents which has been identified as one of the leading effective forms of treatment for children and adolescents with severe behavioral and mental health disorders. Since its creation, there have been countless studies exploring if this form of treatment works with a different population in a variety of locations. Additionally, there have been studies which determined that MST is just as effective as or even less effective than other treatment modalities. This dissertation explored the specific aspects of MST and what leads to its effectiveness. A meta-analysis and case study were conducted as the methodology for this study. Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological Systems Theory was the theoretical guidelines for this study and addressed the research questions: Does MST show better outcomes than usual treatment paradigms? Which factors influence the outcomes of MST for youth? The meta-analysis produced outcome data on four variables and identified that MST does produce better outcomes than usual treatment paradigms. The meta-analysis indicated that treatment fidelity was a factor that influenced MST outcomes, additionally, the case study provided support to the meta-analysis with seven codes, one including treatment fidelity which indicates an influence of MST outcomes. The answers to these research questions provide recommendations for the future of MST overall, the future direction in counselor education, as well as with clinical practice

    This study focuses on advancing the understanding of human services education in international service learning focused study abroad programs. There is a gap in the literature pertaining to service-learning education for human services students. This study explores the integration of service-learning, reflection, and technology in human services education. Case study methodology and document review analysis are used to examine the use of ePortfolio as a reflective tool in addition to the skill development of upper-level undergraduate human services students through service learning. Seven themes arose from the findings, which suggest that international service-learning assists students in human services skill development and ePortfolio are effective as a reflective tool in human services education

    Laboratory observation of a nonlinear interaction between shear Alfv\'{e}n waves

    An experimental investigation of nonlinear interactions between shear Alfv\'{e}n waves in a laboratory plasma is presented. Two Alfv\'{e}n waves, generated by a resonant cavity, are observed to beat together, driving a low frequency nonlinear psuedo-mode at the beat frequency. The psuedo-mode then scatters the Alfv\'{e}n waves, generating a series of sidebands. The observed interaction is very strong, with the normalized amplitude of the driven psuedo-mode comparable to the normalized magnetic field amplitude (δB/B\delta B/B) of the interacting Alfv\'{e}n waves.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys.     Analytic Non-adiabatic Derivative Coupling Terms for Spin-orbit MRCI Wavefunctions. I. Formalism

    Analytic gradients of electronic eigenvalues require one calculation per nuclear geometry, compared to at least 3n + 1 calculations for finite difference methods, where n is the number of nuclei. Analytic nonadiabatic derivative coupling terms (DCTs), which are calculated in a similar fashion, are used to remove nondiagonal contributions to the kinetic energy operator, leading to more accurate nuclear dynamics calculations than those that employ the Born-Oppenheimer approximation, i.e., that assume off-diagonal contributions are zero. The current methods and underpinnings for calculating both of these quantities, gradients and DCTs, for the State-Averaged MultiReference Configuration Interaction with Singles and Doubles (MRCI-SD) wavefunctions in COLUMBUS are reviewed. Before this work, these methods were not available for wavefunctions of a relativistic MRCI-SD Hamiltonian. Calculation of these terms is critical in successfully modeling the dynamics of systems that depend on transitions between potential energy surfaces split by the spin-orbit operator, such as diode-pumped alkali lasers. A formalism for calculating the transition density matrices and analytic derivative coupling terms for such systems is presented
