    Galerkin spectral estimation of vortex-dominated wake flows

    We propose a technique for performing spectral (in time) analysis of spatially-resolved flowfield data, without needing any temporal resolution or information. This is achieved by combining projection-based reduced-order modeling with spectral proper orthogonal decomposition. In this method, space-only proper orthogonal decomposition is first performed on velocity data to identify a subspace onto which the known equations of motion are projected, following standard Galerkin projection techniques. The resulting reduced-order model is then utilized to generate time-resolved trajectories of data. Spectral proper orthogonal decomposition (SPOD) is then applied to this model-generated data to obtain a prediction of the spectral content of the system, while predicted SPOD modes can be obtained by lifting back to the original velocity field domain. This method is first demonstrated on a forced, randomly generated linear system, before being applied to study and reconstruct the spectral content of two-dimensional flow over two collinear flat plates perpendicular to an oncoming flow. At the range of Reynolds numbers considered, this configuration features an unsteady wake characterized by the formation and interaction of vortical structures in the wake. Depending on the Reynolds number, the wake can be periodic or feature broadband behavior, making it an insightful test case to assess the performance of the proposed method. In particular, we show that this method can accurately recover the spectral content of periodic, quasi-periodic, and broadband flows without utilizing any temporal information in the original data. To emphasize that temporal resolution is not required, we show that the predictive accuracy of the proposed method is robust to using temporally-subsampled data.Comment: 35 pages, 12 figure

    Special behavior of alkali beam emission spectroscopy in low-ion-temperature plasma

    Beam emission spectroscopy (BES) is a powerful plasma diagnostic method especially suited for the measurement of plasma density and its fluctuations. As such, synthetic BES codes are regularly used to aid the design or utilization of these diagnostic systems. However, synthetic diagnostics can also be used to study the method in previously not yet explored operational conditions. This paper presents such an analysis utilizing the RENATE-OD synthetic diagnostic code for a hypothetical alkali BES system on the HSX stellarator. HSX is a device featuring an unusual operating regime in the world of fusion devices due to the low ion temperature and low plasma density. It was found that BES shows unusual tendencies in these conditions. The relation between beam energy and plasma penetration in low-ion-temperature plasma, together with unique emission features facilitated by low-density plasma, and the underlying reasons behind these features are explored in this paper

    Properties of Ellipticity Correlation with Atmospheric Structure from Gemini South

    Cosmic shear holds great promise for a precision independent measurement of Ωm\Omega\rm_m, the mass density of the universe relative to the critical density. The signal is expected to be weak, so a thorough understanding of systematic effects is crucial. An important systematic effect is the atmosphere: shear power introduced by the atmosphere is larger than the expected signal. Algorithms exist to extract the cosmic shear from the atmospheric component, though a measure of their success applied to a range of seeing conditions is lacking. To gain insight into atmospheric shear, Gemini South imaging in conjunction with ground condition and satellite wind data were obtained. We find that under good seeing conditions Point-Spread-Function (PSF) correlations persist well beyond the separation typical of high-latitude stars. Under these conditions, ellipticity residuals based on a simple PSF interpolation can be reduced to within a factor of a few of the shot-noise induced ellipticity floor. We also find that the ellipticity residuals are highly correlated with wind direction. Finally, we correct stellar shapes using a more sophisticated procedure and generate shear statistics from stars. Under all seeing conditions in our data set the residual correlations lie everywhere below the target signal level. For good seeing we find that the systematic error attributable to atmospheric turbulence is comparable in magnitude to the statistical error (shape noise) over angular scales relevant to present lensing surveys.Comment: To appear in ApJ April 10, 2007, 659

    Olfactory Jump Reflex Habituation in Drosophila and Effects of Classical Conditioning Mutations

    Habituation is a nonassociative learning mechanism, in which an initial response toward repeated stimuli gradually wanes. This is amongst the simplest and most widespread forms of behavioral plasticity. So far, neither the underlying molecular mechanisms nor the precise neural networks of habituation are well understood. We have developed a novel paradigm to quantify habituation of the olfactory jump reflex in Drosophila. We present data demonstrating several behavioral properties of this phenomenon, generally observed in other species. We also show that the dunce and rutabaga memory mutants behave abnormally in this assay, suggesting that this assay might be used in behavioral screens for new mutants with defects in this simpler form of behavioral plasticity

    Concentration- and time-dependent effectof aminooxyacetic acidon cortical epileptogenicity

    In the present electrophysiological study the effect of aminooxyacetic acid (AOAA) on the cortical epileptogenicity, and on the basic electro-cortical activity was investigated in anesthetized rats.AOAA did not induce spontaneous epileptiform discharges but modified the somato-sensory evoked responses and the cortical epileptogenicity (induced by 4-aminopyridine) in the same manner depending on its concentration. AOAA at low concentrations increased the amplitude of evoked responses and the ipsilateral manifestation of epileptiform activity, however, at high concentrations significantly suppressed both the evoked responses and the induction and expression of seizures discharges. The anticonvulsive effect of AOAA was time-dependent (reached its maximum after 2h AOAA pre-treatment) and reversible. AOAA at low concentrations probably increases the efficacy of the NMDA excitatory system and decreases GABA-synthesis, resulting neuronal hyperexcitation. However, AOAA at high concentrations can lead to an effective cortical inhibition through intra- and extracellular accumulation of GABA. The gradual GABA accumulation - up to a certain level - at the synapses could also explain the time-dependency of the anticonvulsive effect of AOAA

    Computational Lipidology: Predicting Lipoprotein Density Profiles in Human Blood Plasma

    Monitoring cholesterol levels is strongly recommended to identify patients at risk for myocardial infarction. However, clinical markers beyond “bad” and “good” cholesterol are needed to precisely predict individual lipid disorders. Our work contributes to this aim by bringing together experiment and theory. We developed a novel computer-based model of the human plasma lipoprotein metabolism in order to simulate the blood lipid levels in high resolution. Instead of focusing on a few conventionally used predefined lipoprotein density classes (LDL, HDL), we consider the entire protein and lipid composition spectrum of individual lipoprotein complexes. Subsequently, their distribution over density (which equals the lipoprotein profile) is calculated. As our main results, we (i) successfully reproduced clinically measured lipoprotein profiles of healthy subjects; (ii) assigned lipoproteins to narrow density classes, named high-resolution density sub-fractions (hrDS), revealing heterogeneous lipoprotein distributions within the major lipoprotein classes; and (iii) present model-based predictions of changes in the lipoprotein distribution elicited by disorders in underlying molecular processes. In its present state, the model offers a platform for many future applications aimed at understanding the reasons for inter-individual variability, identifying new sub-fractions of potential clinical relevance and a patient-oriented diagnosis of the potential molecular causes for individual dyslipidemia

    Heat flow of the Earth and resonant capture of solar 57-Fe axions

    In a very conservative approach, supposing that total heat flow of the Earth is exclusively due to resonant capture inside the Earth of axions, emitted by 57-Fe nuclei on Sun, we obtain limit on mass of hadronic axion: m_a<1.8 keV. Taking into account release of heat from decays of 40-K, 232-Th, 238-U inside the Earth, this estimation could be improved to the value: m_a<1.6 keV. Both the values are less restrictive than limits set in devoted experiments to search for 57-Fe axions (m_a<216-745 eV), but are much better than limits obtained in experiments with 83-Kr (m_a<5.5 keV) and 7-Li (m_a<13.9-32 keV).Comment: 8 page

    Can adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes be predicted when blood pressure becomes elevated? Secondary analyses from the CHIPS (Control of Hypertension In Pregnancy Study) randomized controlled trial.

    INTRODUCTION: For women with chronic or gestational hypertension in CHIPS (Control of Hypertension In Pregnancy Study, NCT01192412), we aimed to examine whether clinical predictors collected at randomization could predict adverse outcomes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a planned, secondary analysis of data from the 987 women in the CHIPS Trial. Logistic regression was used to examine the impact of 19 candidate predictors on the probability of adverse perinatal (pregnancy loss or high level neonatal care for >48 h, or birthweight <10th percentile) or maternal outcomes (severe hypertension, preeclampsia, or delivery at <34 or <37 weeks). A model containing all candidate predictors was used to start the stepwise regression process based on goodness of fit as measured by the Akaike information criterion. For face validity, these variables were forced into the model: treatment group ("less tight" or "tight" control), antihypertensive type at randomization, and blood pressure within 1 week before randomization. Continuous variables were represented continuously or dichotomized based on the smaller p-value in univariate analyses. An area-under-the-receiver-operating-curve (AUC ROC) of ≥0.70 was taken to reflect a potentially useful model. RESULTS: Point estimates for AUC ROC were <0.70 for all but severe hypertension (0.70, 95% CI 0.67-0.74) and delivery at <34 weeks (0.71, 95% CI 0.66-0.75). Therefore, no model warranted further assessment of performance. CONCLUSIONS: CHIPS data suggest that when women with chronic hypertension develop an elevated blood pressure in pregnancy, or formerly normotensive women develop new gestational hypertension, maternal and current pregnancy clinical characteristics cannot predict adverse outcomes in the index pregnancy

    Scaling behavior in crackle sound during lung inflation

    During slow inflation of lung lobes, we measure a sequence of short explosive transient sound waves called "crackles," each consisting of an initial spike followed by ringing. The crackle time series is irregular and intermittent, with the number of spikes of size s following a power law, n(s)proportional to s(-alpha), with alpha = 2.77 +/- 0.05. We develop a model of crackle wave generation and propagation in a tree structure that combines the avalanchelike opening of airway segments with the wave propagation of crackles in a tree structure. The agreement between experiments and simulations suggests that (i) the irregularities are a consequence of structural heterogeneity in the lung, (ii) the intermittent behavior is due to the avalanchelike opening, and (iii) the scaling is a result of successive attenuations acting on the sound spikes as they propagate through a cascade of bifurcations along the airway tree.
