    Spin-mediated dissipation and frequency shifts of a cantilever at milliKelvin temperatures

    We measure the dissipation and frequency shift of a magnetically coupled cantilever in the vicinity of a silicon chip, down to 2525 mK. The dissipation and frequency shift originates from the interaction with the unpaired electrons, associated with the dangling bonds in the native oxide layer of the silicon, which form a two dimensional system of electron spins. We approach the sample with a 3.433.43 μ\mum-diameter magnetic particle attached to an ultrasoft cantilever, and measure the frequency shift and quality factor as a function of temperature and the distance. Using a recent theoretical analysis [J. M. de Voogd et al., arXiv:1508.07972 (2015)] of the dynamics of a system consisting of a spin and a magnetic resonator, we are able to fit the data and extract the relaxation time T1=0.39±0.08T_1=0.39\pm0.08 ms and spin density σ=0.14±0.01\sigma=0.14\pm0.01 spins per nm2^2. Our analysis shows that at temperatures 500\leq500 mK magnetic dissipation is an important source of non-contact friction.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Repetitive floods intensify outmigration and climate gentrification in coastal cities

Recent floods in America, Europe, Asia and Africa reminded societies across the world of the need to revisit their climate adaptation strategies. Rapid urbanization coinciding with a growing frequency and intensity of floods requires transformative actions in cities worldwide. While abandoning flood prone areas is sometimes discussed as a public climate adaptation option, little attention is paid to studying cumulative impacts of outmigration as an individual choice. To explore the aggregated consequences of households' outmigration decisions in response to increasing flood hazards, we employ a computational agent-based model grounded in empirical heuristics of buyers' and sellers' behaviour in a flood-prone housing market. Our results suggest that pure market-driven processes can cause shifts in demographics in climate-sensitive hotspots placing low-income households further at risk. They get trapped in hazard zones, even when individual risk perceptions and behavioural location preferences are independent of income, suggesting increasing climate gentrification as an outcome of market sorting

    Introduction. This study was performed to assess the applicability of the WHO Maternal Near Miss Tool (MNM Tool) and the organ dysfunction criteria in a high-income country. Material and methods. The MNM tool was applied to 2552 women who died of pregnancy-related causes or sustained severe acute maternal morbidity between August 2004 and August 2006 in one of the 98 hospitals with a maternity unit in the Netherlands. Fourteen (0.6%) cases had insufficient data for application. Each case was assessed according to the three main "MNM categories" specified in the MNM tool and their subcategory criteria: five disease-, four intervention- and seven organ dysfunction-based criteria. Potentially life-threatening conditions (disease-based inclusions) and life-threatening cases (organ dysfunction-based inclusions) were differentiated according to WHO methodology. Outcomes were incidence of all (sub)categories and case-fatality rates. Results. Of the 2538 cases, 2308 (90.9%) women fulfilled disease-based, 2116 (83.4%) intervention-based and 1024 (40.3%) organ dysfunction-based criteria. Maternal death occurred in 48 women, of whom 23 (47.9%) fulfilled disease-based, 33 (68.8%) intervention-based and 31 (64.6%) organ dysfunction-based criteria. Case-fatality rates were 23/2308 (1.0%) for cases fulfilling the disease-based criteria, 33/2116 (1.6%) for intervention-based criteria and 31/1024 (3.0%) for women fulfilling the organ dysfunction-based criteria. Conclusions. In the Netherlands, where advanced laboratory and clinical monitoring are available, organ dysfunction-based criteria of the MNM tool failed to identify nearly two-thirds of sustained severe acute maternal morbidity cases and more than one-third of maternal deaths. Disease-based criteria remain important, and using only organ dysfunction-based criteria would lead to underestimating severe acute maternal morbidity

    Prolonged exercise testing in two children with a mild Multiple Acyl-CoA-Dehydrogenase deficiency

    BACKGROUND: Multiple Acyl-CoA-Dehydrogenase deficiency (MADD) is an inherited metabolic disorder characterized by impaired oxidation of fatty acids and some amino acids. METHODS: We were interested whether children with MADD could tolerate a prolonged low-intensity exercise test and if this test could have any additional diagnostic value. Therefore, we performed a maximal exercise test and a low-intensity prolonged exercise test in 2 patients with MADD and in 5 control subjects. During a prolonged exercise test the subjects exercised on a cycle ergometer at a constant workload of 30% of their maximum for 90 minutes and heart rate, oxygen uptake, fuel utilization and changes in relevant blood and urinary parameters were monitored. RESULTS: The tests were tolerated well. During the prolonged exercise test the fatty acid oxidation (FAO) was quite low compared to 5 control subjects, while characteristic metabolites of MADD appeared in plasma and urine. CONCLUSION: We suggest that the prolonged exercise test could be of diagnostic importance and might replace the fasting test as a diagnostic procedure in some cases, particularly in patients with anamnestic signs of intolerance for prolonged exercise

    A Technique for Assessing Seed Survival of New Pasture Legumes Following Grazing by Sheep

    A technique for assessing the fate of seed grazed by sheep in small field plots was examined using the pasture species Trifolium michelianum cv. Paradana, Medicago truncatula cv. Mogul, Trifolium spumosum and Trigonella balansae. Trifolium spumosum lost the greatest proportion of seed from dry pasture residues (88% seed eaten), whereas Trigonella balansae, Paradana and Mogul lost 61%, 55% and 53% respectively. However, Trifolium spumosum and Paradana had high levels of seed in the faeces (56.8 kg/ha and 65.2 kg/ha respectively), whereas Mogul and Trigonella balansae had low levels (10.3 kg/ha and 11.0 kg/ha respectively). Mogul, due to it\u27s large pod and seed sustained the greatest losses of seed eaten by sheep. Structure and size of the seed head, proximity of the seed head to the ground, seed size and hardseededness all influence the survival of seed grazed by sheep

    Interpreting Overdiagnosis Estimates in Population-based Mammography Screening

    Estimates of overdiagnosis in mammography screening range from 1% to 54%. This review explains such variations using gradual implementation of mammography screening in the Netherlands as an example. Breast cancer incidence without screening was predicted with a micro-simulation model. Observed breast cancer incidence (including ductal carcinoma in situ and invasive breast cancer) was modeled and compared with predicted incidence without screening during various phases of screening program implementation. Overdiagnosis was calculated as the difference between the modeled number of breast cancers with and the predicted number of breast cancers without screening. Estimating overdiagnosis annually between 1990 and 2006 illustrated the importance of the time at which overdiagnosis is measured. Overdiagnosis was also calculated using several estimators identified from the literature. The estimated overdiagnosis rate peaked during the implementation phase of screening, at 11.4% of all predicted cancers in women aged 0–100 years in the absence of screening. At steady-state screening, in 2006, this estimate had decreased to 2.8%. When different estimators were used, the overdiagnosis rate in 2006 ranged from 3.6% (screening age or older) to 9.7% (screening age only). The authors concluded that the estimated overdiagnosis rate in 2006 could vary by a factor of 3.5 when different denominators were used. Calculations based on earlier screening program phases may overestimate overdiagnosis by a factor 4. Sufficient follow-up and agreement regarding the chosen estimator are needed to obtain reliable estimates

    Plasmodium translocon component EXP2 facilitates hepatocyte invasion

    Plasmodium parasites possess a translocon that exports parasite proteins into the infected erythrocyte. Although the translocon components are also expressed during the mosquito and liver stage of infection, their function remains unexplored. Here, using a combination of genetic and chemical assays, we show that the translocon component Exported Protein 2 (EXP2) is critical for invasion of hepatocytes. EXP2 is a pore-forming protein that is secreted from the sporozoite upon contact with the host cell milieu. EXP2-deficient sporozoites are impaired in invasion, which can be rescued by the exogenous administration of recombinant EXP2 and alpha-hemolysin (an S. aureus pore-forming protein), as well as by acid sphingomyelinase. The latter, together with the negative impact of chemical and genetic inhibition of acid sphingomyelinase on invasion, reveals that EXP2 pore-forming activity induces hepatocyte membrane repair, which plays a key role in parasite invasion. Overall, our findings establish a novel and critical function for EXP2 that leads to an active participation of the host cell in Plasmodium sporozoite invasion, challenging the current view of the establishment of liver stage infection
