Non-Fermi-Liquid Scaling in Ce(Ru_{0.5}Rh_{0.5})_2Si_2

We study the temperature and field dependence of the magnetic and transport properties of the non-Fermi-liquid compound Ce(Ru_{1-x}Rh_x)_2Si_2 at x=0.5. For fields \lesssim 0.1T the experimental results show signatures of the presence of Kondo-disorder, expected to be large at this concentration. For larger fields, however, magnetic and transport properties are controlled by the coupling of the conduction electrons to critical spin-fluctuations. The temperature dependence of the susceptibility as well as the scaling properties of the magnetoresistance are in very good agreement with the predictions of recent dynamical mean-field theories of Kondo alloys close to a spin-glass quantum critical point.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. Työterveyssuunnitelma terveyden edistämisen viitekehyksessä- : työterveyshoitajien kokemuksia työterveyssuunnitelman toteuttamisesta

    Get PDF
Kehittämistarve ilmenee tapaamiseen valmistavan esikyselylomakkeen rakenteen uudelleenarviointiin. Millaisilla avoimilla kysymyksillä saadaan esiin asiakkaan terveyden lukutaito ja työ lukutaito. Miten täydennetty esikyselylomake olisi teknisesti toteutettavissa terveystarkastukseen kirjaamisen pohjaksi ja yhdessä toteutettavaksi työterveyssuunnitelmaksi.Occupational health care environment is in a rapidly changing state and occupational health care aims to respond with properly targeted actions, by providing service processes that support the occupational well-being of employees and the continuation of working life with the aim of affecting the correct forms of work and co-operation with our customers. Health promotion is defined in a WHO declaration (1986) as a process in which people have the opportunity to become aware of their situation in order to identify and improve their physical, mental and social wellbeing. In occupational health care, health promotion is included in all service processes as output of information, guidance and advice. A Personal Health Plan is a plan that is jointly developed in a health check to promote the customer’s personal health and prevent disability. It makes visible to the customer and the occupational health practitioner their shared vision of resources and objectives. In a health dialogue, health, resources, work and work load related things should be handled extensively in one meeting. For the customer the dialogue should be an encouraging opportunity to promote their own well-being and review their own current situation and the most important objectives in the future. Occupational health nurses’ empowering health guidance requires a dialogue proficiency and knowledge of the customer's motivation method. This thesis has dealt with one medical center’s occupational health nurses' experiences of health plan implementation in health checks, the factors enabling or obstructing the recognition and implementation of the health plan. The responses of the occupational health nurses who answered the questionnaire revealed professionalism and a customer-oriented approach to work. In open responses the concepts of empowering guidance methods were used in client work descriptions. The Occupational Health Plan was realized in practice in each occupational health nurse’s entry of the guidance, counseling follow-up plan in the patient information system, rather than as a separate Health Plan. The time taken for medical examination was not considered to be sufficient to compile the plan during the visit, because technically the health plan would require a separate entry. Customer preparation before the meeting by filling the preliminary information form was regarded as enriching for the realization of dialogue and helping to draw up a Health Plan together. The familiarization in the common practice of Health Plan entry was considered necessary. Do we need a different way of thinking in logging implementation? As a development suggestion, the evaluation of the structure of the preliminary information form. What kind of open-ended questions elicit the customer's health literacy and work literacy? How could the filled in preliminary questionnaire form be used technically as a basis for health examination and for an Occupational Health Plan to be executed together

Susceptibility Inhomogeneity and Non-Fermi-Liquid Behavior in Ce(Ru_{0.5}Rh_{0.5})_2Si_2

Magnetic susceptibility and muon spin rotation (\muSR) experiments have been carried out to study the effect of structural disorder on the non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) behavior of the heavy-fermion alloy Ce(Ru_{0.5}Rh_{0.5})_2Si_2. Analysis of the bulk susceptibility in the framework of disorder-driven Griffiths-phase and Kondo-disorder models for NFL behavior yields relatively narrow distributions of characteristic spin fluctuation energies, in agreement with \muSR linewidths that give the inhomogeneous spread in susceptibility. \muSR and NMR data both indicate that disorder explains the "nearly NFL" behavior observed above \sim2 K, but does not dominate the NFL physics found at low temperatures and low magnetic fields.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, REVTeX, submitted to Phys. Dissipative effects on quantum glassy systems

We discuss the behavior of a quantum glassy system coupled to a bath of quantum oscillators. We show that the system localizes in the absence of interactions when coupled to a subOhmic bath. When interactions are switched on localization disappears and the system undergoes a phase transition towards a glassy phase. We show that the position of the critical line separating the disordered and the ordered phases strongly depends on the coupling to the bath. For a given type of bath, the ordered glassy phase is favored by a stronger coupling. Ohmic, subOhmic and superOhmic baths lead to different transition lines. We draw our conclusions from the analysis of the partition function using the replicated imaginary-time formalism and from the study of the real-time dynamics of the coupled system using the Schwinger-Keldysh closed time-path formalism.Comment: 39 pages, 13 figures, RevTe

Archaeometrical study of Khmer stoneware from the Angkorian period: Results from the Cerangkor Project

    Get PDF
In the area around Angkor, Cambodia, several ceramics kilns dating from the ninth to 15th centuries ce have been discovered since 1995. The technical, typological and compositional characterization of their production has been one of the main goals of the Cerangkor Project. Samples of green‐glazed ‘Kulen‐type' stoneware and non‐ glazed stoneware produced in five kiln sites in the Angkor region were analysed chemically by wavelength‐dispersive X‐ray fluorescence spectrometry (WDS‐XRF) and also petrographically. The data indicate that some workshops used similar raw materials for the same types of ceramics, suggesting the exploitation of the same geological formations in the whole region. Several references groups were established for each type of stoneware offering an important database for future provenance studies of sherds from consumption sites

Abstract

Background

Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL) is a common condition in which patients lose the hearing in one ear within 3 days. Systemic glucocorticoid treatments have been used as standard therapy for SSHL; however, about 20% of patients do not respond. We tested the safety and efficacy of topical insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) application using gelatin hydrogels as a treatment for SSHL.

Methods

Patients with SSHL that showed no recovery to systemic glucocorticoid administration were recruited. We applied gelatin hydrogels, impregnated with recombinant human IGF1, into the middle ear. The primary outcome measure was the proportion of patients showing hearing improvement 12 weeks after the test treatment. The secondary outcome measures were the proportion of patients showing improvement at 24 weeks and the incidence of adverse events. The null hypothesis was that 33% of patients would show hearing improvement, as was reported for a historical control after hyperbaric oxygen therapy.

Results

In total, 25 patients received the test treatment at a median of 23 days (range 15-32) after the onset of SSHL, between 2007 and 2009. At 12 weeks after the test treatment, 48% (95% CI 28% to 69%; <it>P </it>= 0.086) of patients showed hearing improvement, and the proportion increased to 56% (95% CI 35% to 76%; <it>P </it>= 0.015) at 24 weeks. No serious adverse events were observed.

Conclusions

Topical IGF1 application using gelatin hydrogels is well tolerated and may be efficacious for hearing recovery in patients with SSHL that is resistant to systemic glucocorticoids.</p

クォーク間の「芯」をとらえた --物質が安定して存在できる理由の理解に貢献--. 京都大学プレスリリース. 2022-09-05.We performed a novel Σ⁺+p scattering experiment at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Approximately 2400 Σ⁺+p elastic scattering events were identified from 4.9 × 10⁷ tagged Σ⁺+ particles in the Σ⁺+ momentum range 0.44-0.80 GeV/c. The differential cross sections of the Σ⁺+p elastic scattering were derived with much better precision than in previous experiments. The obtained differential cross sections were approximately 2 mb/sr or less, which were not as large as those predicted by the fss2 and FSS models based on the quark cluster model in the short-range region. By performing phase-shift analyses for the obtained differential cross sections, we experimentally derived the phase shifts of the ³S₁ and ¹P₁ channels for the first time. The phase shift of the ³S₁ channel, where a large repulsive core was predicted owing to the Pauli effect between quarks, was evaluated as 20° < |δ₃S₁| < 35°. If the sign of δ₃S₁ is assumed to be negative, the interaction in this channel is moderately repulsive, as the Nijmegen extended-sort-core models predicted

Correlation between CD105 expression and postoperative recurrence and metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma

BACKGROUND: Angiogenesis is one of the mechanisms most critical to the postoperative recurrence and metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Thus, finding the molecular markers associated with angiogenesis may help identify patients at increased risk for recurrence and metastasis of HCC. This study was designed to investigate whether CD105 or CD34 could serve as a valid prognostic marker in patients with HCC by determining if there is a correlation between CD105 or CD34 expression and postoperative recurrence or metastasis. METHODS: Immunohistochemical staining for the CD105, CD34 and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) antibodies was performed in 113 HCC tissue specimens containing paracarcinomatous tissue and in 14 normal liver tissue specimens. The quantitation of microvessels identified by anti-CD105 and anti-CD34 monoclonal antibodies and the semiquantitation of VEGF expression identified by anti-VEGF monoclonal antibody were analyzed in conjunction with the clinicopathological characteristics of the HCC and any available follow-up information about the patients from whom the specimens were obtained. RESULTS: CD105 was not expressed in the vascular endothelial cells of any normal liver tissue or paracarcinomatous liver tissue but was expressed in the vascular endothelial cells of all HCC tissue. In contrast, CD34 was expressed in the vascular endothelial cells of normal liver tissue, paracarcinomatous tissue, and HCC tissue in the following proportions of specimens: 86.7%, 93.8%, and 100%, respectively. The microvascular densities (MVDs) of HCC determined by using an anti-CD105 mAb (CD105-MVD) and an anti-CD34 mAb (CD34-MVD), were 71.7 ± 8.3 (SD) and 106.3 ± 10.4 (SD), respectively. There was a significant correlation between CD105-MVD and CD34-MVD (r = 0.248, P = 0.021). Although CD34-MVD was significantly correlated with VEGF expression (r = 0.243, P = 0.024), CD105-MVD was more closely correlated (r = 0.300, P= 0.005). The correlation between microscopic venous invasion and CD105-MVD, but not CD34-MVD, was also statistically significant (r = 0.254, P = 0.018). Univariate analysis showed that CD105-MVD was significantly correlated with the 2-year overall survival rate (P = 0.014); CD34-MVD was not (P = 0.601). Multivariate analysis confirmed that CD105-MVD was an independent prognostic factor and that CD34-MVD was not. CONCLUSION: The anti-CD105 mAb is an ideal instrument to quantify new microvessels in HCC as compared with anti-CD34 mAb. CD105-MVD as compared with CD34-MVD is relevant a significant and independent prognostic indicator for recurrence and metastasis in HCC patients

Parathyroid hormone 1 (1-34) acts on the scales and involves calcium metabolism in goldfish

金沢大学環日本海域環境研究センターThe effect of fugu parathyroid hormone 1 (fugu PTH1) on osteoblasts and osteoclasts in teleosts was examined with an assay system using teleost scale and the following markers: alkaline phosphatase (ALP) for osteoblasts and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) for osteoclasts. Synthetic fugu PTH1 (1-34) (100 pg/ml-10 ng/ml) significantly increased ALP activity at 6 h of incubation. High-dose (10 ng/ml) fugu PTH1 significantly increased ALP activity even after 18 h of incubation. In the case of TRAP activity, fugu PTH1 did not change at 6 h of incubation, but fugu PTH1 (100 pg/ml-10 ng/ml) significantly increased TRAP activity at 18 h. Similar results were obtained for human PTH (1-34), but there was an even greater response with fugu PTH1 than with human PTH. In vitro, we demonstrated that both the receptor activator of the NF-κB ligand in osteoblasts and the receptor activator NF-κB mRNA expression in osteoclasts increased significantly by fugu PTH1 treatment. In an in vivo experiment, fugu PTH1 induced hypercalcemia resulted from the increase of both osteoblastic and osteoclastic activities in the scale as well as the decrease of scale calcium contents after fugu PTH1 injection. In addition, an in vitro experiment with intramuscular autotransplanted scale indicated that the ratio of multinucleated osteoclasts/mononucleated osteoclasts in PTH-treated scales was significantly higher than that in the control scales. Thus, we concluded that PTH acts on osteoblasts and osteoclasts in the scales and regulates calcium metabolism in goldfish. © 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved
