    Deep multiband surface photometry on star forming galaxies: II. A volume limited sample of 21 emission lines galaxies

    We present deep surface photometry of a volume--limited sample of 21 UM emission line galaxies in broadband optical UBVRI and near infra-red (NIR) HKs filters. The sample comprises 19 blue compact galaxies (BCGs) and two spirals. For some targets the exposure times are the deepest to date. For the BCG UM462 we observe a previously undetected second disk component beyond a surface brightness level of mu_B=26 mag arcsec^{-2}. This is a true low surface brightness component with central surface brightness mu_0=24.1 mag arcsec^{-2} and scale length h_r=1.5 kpc. All BCGs are dwarfs, with M_B>=-18, and very compact, with an average scale length of h_r~1 kpc. We separate the burst and host populations for each galaxy and compare them to stellar evolutionary models with and without nebular emission contribution. We also measure the A_{180} asymmetry in all filters and detect a shift from optical to NIR in the average asymmetry of the sample. This shift seems to be correlated with the morphological class of the BCGs. Using the color-asymmetry relation, we identify five BCGs in the sample as mergers, which is confirmed by their morphological class. Though clearly separated from normal galaxies in the concentration-asymmetry parameter space, we find that it is not possible to distinguish luminous starbursting BCGs from the merely star forming low luminosity BCGs.Comment: 48 pages, 39 figures, submitte

    UNDERWATER NON-LINEAR CAMERA CALIBRATION: AN ACCURACY ANALYSIS

    One of the most challenging problems associated with underwater 3D movement analysis is the accurate calibration of the cameras. Additional sources of errors are present in underwater acquisitions such as the nonlinear distortion caused by water interface, camera lenses (ex. wide angle) and housing’s glasses. Despite this, in the literature, systems based on a linear calibration model (DLT) were proposed (Yanai et al., 1996; Machtsiras & Sanders, 2009; Gourgoulis, et al. 2008). However, the results of underwater accuracy were not similar to those obtained out of the water. In Kwon, et al. 1999, the use of a modified DLT algorithm to model the distortion was proposed but the results of accuracy were not substantially improved, with Root Mean Square (RMS) values ranging from 5.6 to 7.2mm. Recently, alternative approaches were proposed to non-linear camera calibration and submillimeter accuracy was reached (Cerveri et al., 1998; Zhang, 2000; Pribanić, Sturm & Cifrek, 2008). However, these approaches were not applied underwater. In previous work, a new non-linear calibration method using a straight line plane object was proposed and tested out of the water (Silvatti et al., 2009 available in http://calib.googlecode.com).     Emission-Line Galaxy Surveys as Probes of the Spatial Distribution of Dwarf Galaxies. I. The University of Michigan Survey

    Objective-prism surveys which select galaxies on the basis of line-emission are extremely effective at detecting low-luminosity galaxies and constitute some of the deepest available samples of dwarfs. In this study, we confirm that emission-line galaxies (ELGs) in the University of Michigan (UM) objective-prism survey (MacAlpine et al. 1977-1981) are reliable tracers of large-scale structure, and utilize the depth of the samples to examine the spatial distribution of low-luminosity (MB>_{B} > -18.0) dwarfs relative to higher luminosity giant galaxies (MB_{B} \leq -18.0) in the Updated Zwicky Catalogue (Falco et al. 1999). New spectroscopic data are presented for 26 UM survey objects. We analyze the relative clustering properties of the overall starbursting ELG and normal galaxy populations, using nearest neighbor and correlation function statistics. This allows us to determine whether the activity in ELGs is primarily caused by gravitational interactions. We conclude that galaxy-galaxy encounters are not the sole cause of activity in ELGs since ELGs tend to be more isolated and are more often found in the voids when compared to their normal galaxy counterparts. Furthermore, statistical analyses performed on low-luminosity dwarf ELGs show that the dwarfs are less clustered when compared to their non-active giant neighbors. The UM dwarf samples have greater percentages of nearest neighbor separations at large values and lower correlation function amplitudes relative to the UZC giant galaxy samples.     We have realized a scheme for continuous loading of a magnetic trap (MT). ^{52}Cr atoms are continuously captured and cooled in a magneto-optical trap (MOT). Optical pumping to a metastable state decouples atoms from the cooling light. Due to their high magnetic moment (6 Bohr magnetons), low-field seeking metastable atoms are trapped in the magnetic quadrupole field provided by the MOT. Limited by inelastic collisions between atoms in the MOT and in the MT, we load 10^8 metastable atoms at a rate of 10^8 atoms/s below 100 microkelvin into the MT.     Perfil vacinal em gestantes e em crianças menores de um ano no bairro de Três Poços, em Volta Redonda, estado do Rio de Janeiro e no Brasil

    A vacinação é de extrema relevância, sobretudo para crianças menores de um ano de idade e gestantes, pois estimula o sistema imune, promovendo assim a saúde. O objetivo deste estudo é analisar a situação vacinal nestes grupos acompanhados pelo Programa de Saúde da Família de Três Poços (Volta Redonda - RJ), comparando com o município de Volta Redonda, com o estado do Rio de Janeiro e com o Brasil e, através destas análises, traçar o perfil vacinal. Foram analisados os contra-arquivos da unidade do Programa de Saúde da Família (PSF) do bairro de Três Poços, em Volta Redonda, e comparados com os dados disponíveis no site do DataSUS, referentes à Volta Redonda, ao Estado do Rio de Janeiro e ao Brasil no período de janeiro de 2007 até julho de 2009. Com os dados sobre o número total de crianças menores de um ano, de crianças menores de um ano com a vacinação em dia, do total de gestantes e de gestantes com a vacinação em dia, foram calculadas as porcentagens mês a mês para serem apresentadas em gráficos e assim ilustrar possíveis desigualdades. A partir dos dados obtidos foram confeccionados gráficos referentes aos períodos estudados e aos grupos, sendo notório que em Volta Redonda encontram-se percentuais de vacinação maiores do que as demais analisadas. O PSF de Três Poços possui as maiores variações nos índices vacinais tanto em gestantes quanto em crianças menores de um ano. A porcentagem de crianças menores de um ano é, na maioria das vezes, maior que a de gestantes com Programa Nacional de Imunização em dia, demonstrando que ações que visam à conscientização das gestantes sobre a importância deste programa. Concluindo, a equipe de saúde possui papel fundamental na informação à população sobre medidas de saúde, além de ter acesso a suas moradias através da visita domiciliar, permitindo que haja monitoramento do calendário de vacinação da comunidade, difundindo assim os benefícios da imunização não só nos grupos pesquisados, mas também nas outras faixas etárias

    A Stellar Population Gradient in VII Zw 403 - Implications for the Formation of Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxies

    We present evidence for the existence of an old stellar halo in the Blue Compact Dwarf galaxy VII Zw 403. VII Zw 403 is the first Blue Compact Dwarf galaxy for which a clear spatial segregation of the resolved stellar content into a "core-halo" structure is detected. Multicolor HST/WFPC2 observations indicate that active star formation occurs in the central region, but is strikingly absent at large radii. Instead, a globular-cluster-like red giant branch suggests the presence of an old (> 10 Gyr) and metal poor (=-1.92) stellar population in the halo. While the vast majority of Blue Compact Dwarf galaxies has been recognized to possess halos of red color in ground-based surface photometry, our observations of VII Zw 403 establish for the first time a direct correspondence between a red halo color and the presence of old, red giant stars. If the halos of Blue Compact Dwarf galaxies are all home to such ancient stellar populations, then the fossil record conflicts with delayed-formation scenarios for dwarfs.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Ap

    Development and characterization of new microsatellites for Eugenia dysenterica DC (Myrtaceae).

    Microsatellite markers were developed for population genetic analyses of the Neotropical tree Eugenia dysenterica DC (Myrtaceae), after construction of a shotgun genomic library for microsatellite discovery. Nine primers were designed, of which 5 yielded amplified product. These primers were polymorphic for 97 individuals collected in 3 distinct localities. The number of alleles per locus (primer) ranged from 3 to 11 and expected heterozygosities varied from 0.309 to 0.884. The probability of locus identity was ~1.88 x 10-4 and the probability of paternity exclusion was ~0.9367. The 5 microsatellite primer pairs may be suitable for population genetic studies such as parentage and fine-scale genetic analyses of this species

    This paper is concerned with Hipparion from Ribatejo, Portugal, and with the stratigraphy of the Neogene series of this region. The first two chapters are an introduction and an historical review. Paleontological study includes both a revision of the specimens accounted by ROMAN (1907) and the description of new material. Two forms were recognized, an early H. cf. primigenium, lower Vallesian in age, NM 9 mammal unit (from Archino, Vila Nova da Rainha, Aveiras de Cima), and a more advanced H. primigenium cf. melendezi. Upper Vallesian, NM 10 (possibly lowermost Turolian, NM 11) (at Azambujeira and Marmeleira). A synthesis of Middle and Upper Miocene from Ribatejo is also presented. Levels with H. p. cf. melendezi are somewhat older than «Upper Pontian», as it was previously acknowledged, they attain at the best the lowermost Turolian (approximately corresponding to «Upper Pontian»). Even higher levels may be Turolian in age, though they are not yet accurately dated. Almost all the localities are shown (tableau 11) according to its stratigraphical position; age, correspondance to mammal units from NM 5 to NM 10 (and may be also from NM 11 to NM 12), and correlation with marine formations near Lisbon are also taken in account. The stratigraphical position of localities such as Póvoa de Santarém, Quinta do Marmelal, Pero Filho, Azambujeira (lower levels), and Fonte do Pinheiro was revised; the stratigraphical position of Marmeleira was ascertained. The localities so far known correspond to NM 5 (?), NM 6, NM 8, NM 9, NM 10 and possibly to NM II and NM 12. A new interpretation (M. T. ANTUNES) of localities with oysters from Ribatejo allows a better correlation with vertebrate localities. Relationships with Serravallian transgression seem well established. Only two localities, Vila Nova da Rainha and Foz do Alviela, may possibly be correlated to V-b division of Lisbon (Langhian) with «Hispanotherium fauna». All the other localities are younger than Serravallian oyster beds. Undirect correlation shows that NM 6 localities are somewhat younger than the apogee ef Serravallian transgression (corresponding approximately to Blow's N 11 to N 13 zones based on planctonic foraminifera)
