The notion of boundaries is one of the main philosophical questions that is arising necessary in the interpretation of geography from a geo- ontological point of view, and its relevance to contemporary discussions has been emphasized and studied by various authors. But what kind of objects are geographic boundaries? What kind of borders were defined by modern ontologists of geography? How can boundaries be categorized from a geo-ontological point of view? What are the main modern classifications of geographical boundaries? How can culture and human beliefs influence such classifications? These questions represent a starting point in this paper aimed at examining how the concept of boundaries is defined by modern ontologists of geography, how types of geographical boundaries have been identified and classified, and the influence of cultural differences and human beliefs on such geo- ontological classifications. First, we will rely on the taxonomy of B. Smith and E. Galton, who offer the most cited complex classifications of geographical boundaries covering physical, biological, psychological, social and political phenomena. Secondly, we will discuss the importance of cultural differences and human beliefs for geo-ontological classification based on the considerations of  B. Smith and D.M. Mark. М. Марка

Hic Sunt Leones. New Perspective for an Ontology of Ancient Geography

The aim of this paper is twofold. The first one is to outline the connection between geography and philosophy from the point of view of contemporary ontology, and to present the distinction between classical and nonclassical geographies, which might constitute a useful tool for the spatial representation of the ancient geography. The second aim is to get a clear understanding of the philosophical problems that ancient geography may raise, starting from the basic question: “what is the scope of this particular science?”, and then dealing with more specific methodological and representational issues. The basic idea, upheld by Arnaldo Momigliano, is that learning to see the world through the eyes of ancient populations might deeply influence the contemporary debate, in particular on geo-informatics conceptualizations and representations

Mapping Bucharest from a Geo-Ontological Point of View

    No full text
The Research Institute of the University of Bucharest is financially supporting the project of research Mapping Bucharest from a Geo-ontological Point of View, which is aimed at developing the first specific vocabulary for mapping Bucharest from a geo-ontological point of view. The specific goal of this project is to provide a geographical inventory of classes, boundaries, entities and relation, which would describe the city of Bucharest and its historical evolution over time (accordingly, some specific questions that may arise are: may do we need a specific definition of geographical entity? How can we map the boundaries of Bucharest? How can we describe their historical evolution over time? Is the division of Bucharest in six administrative units entirely clear-cut? What is the relationship between such administrative units and the informal cartiere such as Lipscani, Pantelimon, Titan and so forth?). Moreover, part of this project will be especially focused on the possible applications of this vocabulary to other fields of research, which might comprehend, among others, public administration, historical studies, cultural heritage, and to the proposal of specific projects in digital humanities, devoted to the study of Bucharest from a geographical perspective
