The dynamics of Polish labour market

    Get PDF
The article presents the results of the analyses concerning the parameters of Polish labour market for the years 1998-2009. A special attention was given to the coefficients of occupational activity, employment rates and the level of both general and long-term unemployment. The analyses were performed separately for the gender of employees and with the consideration of the territorial division, while separating voivodeships with the lowest and the highest rates. It has been observed that the dynamics of changes on Polish labour market is closely associated with the changing age structure of the population and has specific consequences in the sphere of condition of Polish pension scheme and social security system. The conclusions emphasise the fact that the level of coefficients that characterise the Polish labour market is the most unfavourable in marginal age brackets of people that make labour resources. During 2004-2009 have been distinguished from the period of 1998-2003, because at that time the change of parameters that characterise Polish labour market was clearly apparent. It was associated with accession of Poland to the EU

Transcatheter closure of atrial septal defects type 2 in children under three years of age

Background: Atrial septal defect (ASD) type 2, according to current standards, is closed percutaneously usually after the child has reached the age of four to five years. There are limited data regarding such treatment in younger infants. Aim: We sought to evaluate the feasibility, safety, and efficacy of percutaneous ASD closure in children under three years of age. Methods: The research group consisted of 157 children less than three years old with haemodynamically significant ASD, who underwent effective transcatheter ASD closure in a single tertiary centre between 1999 and 2014. The mean procedural age of the treated children was 2.2 years and mean weight was 12.5 kg. In all cases nitinol wire mesh devices were applied (mostly Amplatzer Septal Occluders). ASD was closed using standard technique (except a few cases wherein the left disc of the implant was inserted initially into the right pulmonary vein to prevent oblique position of the device). Procedure-related complications were divided into major and minor ones. Results: Atrial septal defect was closed in 149 children: 97 with a single ASD and 52 with double/multiple ASD. The procedure was abandoned in eight patients (three with single and five with double/multiple ASD). No death or implant embolisation occurred during the procedure or follow-up, and there was one case of major postprocedural complications. Normalisation of the right ventricular diameter occurred in all patients during one-year follow-up. In the majority of children acceleration of physical development and resolution of accompanying morbidity were observed in follow-up. Conclusions: Percutaneous ASD closure can be performed safely in children under three years of age with low risk of peri- or postprocedural complications

Respiratory syncytial virus as a cause of pulmonary hemorrhage in a low birth weight infant - strategies for protection and prevention: a case report

A case study of 39-year old man with persistent wheezing, episodes of haemoptysis and dry cough unsuccessfully treated with inhaled beta2-agonists and steroids for about 10 months. Chest radiograph revealed a disproportion in dimensions between both lungs, with the left one being smaller than the right one. Spirometry demonstrated a restrictive pattern. During bronchoscopy, a polypoid endobronchial tumor, localized in the left main bronchus, completely occluding its lumen, was found. The tumor was diagnosed as carcinoid. In this case, due to the lack of characteristic symptoms, diagnosis of carcinoid was delayed. Patients unsuccessfully treated for bronchial asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease should undergo bronchoscopic examination

Dental Health and Mortality in People With End-Stage Kidney Disease Treated With Hemodialysis: A Multinational Cohort Study

Background Dental disease is more extensive in adults with chronic kidney disease, but whether dental health and behaviors are associated with survival in the setting of hemodialysis is unknown. Study Design Prospective multinational cohort. Setting & Participants 4,205 adults treated with long-term hemodialysis, 2010 to 2012 (Oral Diseases in Hemodialysis [ORAL-D] Study). Predictors Dental health as assessed by a standardized dental examination using World Health Organization guidelines and personal oral care, including edentulousness; decayed, missing, and filled teeth index; teeth brushing and flossing; and dental health consultation. Outcomes All-cause and cardiovascular mortality at 12 months after dental assessment. Measurements Multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazards regression models fitted with shared frailty to account for clustering of mortality risk within countries. Results During a mean follow-up of 22.1 months, 942 deaths occurred, including 477 cardiovascular deaths. Edentulousness (adjusted HR, 1.29; 95% CI, 1.10-1.51) and decayed, missing, or filled teeth score ≥ 14 (adjusted HR, 1.70; 95% CI, 1.33-2.17) were associated with early all-cause mortality, while dental flossing, using mouthwash, brushing teeth daily, spending at least 2 minutes on oral hygiene daily, changing a toothbrush at least every 3 months, and visiting a dentist within the past 6 months (adjusted HRs of 0.52 [95% CI, 0.32-0.85], 0.79 [95% CI, 0.64-0.97], 0.76 [95% CI, 0.58-0.99], 0.84 [95% CI, 0.71-0.99], 0.79 [95% CI, 0.65-0.95], and 0.79 [95% CI, 0.65-0.96], respectively) were associated with better survival. Results for cardiovascular mortality were similar. Limitations Convenience sample of clinics. Conclusions In adults treated with hemodialysis, poorer dental health was associated with early death, whereas preventive dental health practices were associated with longer survival

Apomixis in the sugar beet reproduction system

    No full text
Research on five lines of sugar beet with a tendency towards apomixis showed the presence of facultative apomicts among the studied plants (2.4%). Facultative agamospermy was detected by isozyme analysis and by nuclear DNA amount estimation using flow cytometry. Genetic segregation according to isozymes in seed progenies showed the presence of meiotic agamospermy; its probable mechanism was normal meiosis in tetraploid cells of the female archespore. The occurrence of cytologically unreduced male gametophytes was confirmed in 21% of the plants by the indirect method of determining ploidy level from the number of pore regions in mature pollen grains. These studies identified homozygotic sublines with a tendency towards apomixis, proposed for practical breeding at the Kutno Sugar Beet Breeding Company Ltd., to be included in breeding experiments as components of heterotic hybrids

Damage to the forest environment as a result of tourism and recreation

The purpose of the paper was to determine the impact of the most popular form of recreation and tourism (i.e. walking) on the environment in selected forests that were made available by the means of educational trails. The research was carried out in south−eastern Poland, in the forest reserves Bór (RB) and Polanki (RP) as well as in the economic forests of the Kołaczyce (NK) and Brzozów (NB) forest districts. A 1−km−long transect was established on both sides along each educational trail with control points determined every 10 m. In total 200 points were distinguished and data on the degree of soil damage was collected at research plots with an area of 1 m2 each. Based on these 200 plots, damage of young trees and soil were measured. The studies indicate that the damage to the soil and trees in the immediate vicinity of the routes available for recreation and tourism are very large. In all objects, 53−99% of the soil surface and 28−56% of trees were damaged. Slightly damaged soil earned the highest fraction on all studied trails (for NK it was 62%, RB – 49%, RP – 35.5% and NB – 26.5%). The most severe soil damage (packed soil) was recorded in as many as 37% of the measurement points in RB, 9.5% in RP and NB and 7% in NK. The most common form of damage to the trees was bark rub without damaging the pulp or partial damage to the needles or leaves. In case of NK, such damage was observed in 41% of trees, while 30.4% of RB, NB in 20.9% and RP in 13.9%. Trees ranked as the 2 most severe degrees of damage accounted for as much as 9.2% in NK, while 7.2% of RP, 6.4% in RB and 5.6% in NB. The damage level of the examined components of the forest environment determined in the study as a result of tourist and recreational use should be considered as high
